what s on MATS The Sound of Music The hills will be alive in the Upper Hunter next month when the Muswellbrook Amateur Theatrical Society (MATS) stages the Rogers and Hammerstein Broadway classic, The Sound of Music over three weekends in July and August. A cast of around 30 locals led by director, Rachel-Ann Wilcher and producer Virginia Greentree have been hard at work since February to bring this family-favourite to life. All the songs you know including Do Re Mi, Edelweiss and How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? - are in the show, along with a few you might not have heard before. The storyline also goes into more detail around the political situation which forced the Von Trapp family to flee their beloved Australia. Cecilia Connell stars as Maria with the Captain played by Nate Adamthwaite. Rayna Russo takes on the role of Baroness von Schraeder and Andrew Wu plays Uncle Max. During this time, many secretive traditions developed to allow those of Scottish and Celtic heritage to continue to display their pride of their culture. Many of these traditions are still carried out today. The Aberdeen Highland Games is one of the biggest and most revered local events that proudly stockpiles and displays a cornucopia of Scottish and Celtic traditions centuries old. This weekend, Saturday 2nd July visitors to the township of Aberdeen will be transported to the Scottish Isles and will have the chance to see the Tartan Warriors battle it out with a traditional Strongman Competition ; the ever-popular and crowd-pleasing sport of tug-o-war; take in the soulful sounds of the biggest display ever of massed pipe bands and a number of other traditional delights. To add to this, there will be markets, traditional Scottish food, clan information and memorabilia, children s entertainment and novelty events. It ll be a full weekend of highland flinging that is sure to be entertaining for the whole family! This event is a drawcard for many hundreds of people to the town of Aberdeen and every year, the number of visitors grows larger. Community satisfaction survey results are in The results of the 2016 Community Satisfaction Survey was presented to Singleton Council. Council engaged Micromex Research to undertake a community satisfaction survey of 504 Singleton residents, earlier this year. The survey was used to assess the importance and satisfaction of Council-provided services and facilities, identify current community priorities and was compared against a community satisfaction survey taken in 2011. The results showed that overall 83 per cent of residents were at least somewhat satisfied with Council s performance in 2016. Areas that achieved satisfaction ratings above the norm include: maintaining the local road network; Gym & Swim facilities; managing industrial and commercial development; managing residential development and provision of cycleways. There was a decrease in satisfaction levels for car parking in the town centres; and maintenance of parks, playgrounds and reserves. Singleton Council s General Manager Jason Linnane says the changes in importance and satisfaction levels can be attributed to some direct activity by Council while others are likely a reflection of current community attitudes. leisure & lifestyle Great learning opportunities Lee Watts manager of the Scone Neighbourhood Centre (SNRC) said, There are great opportunities to learn skills in the workplace particularly in community services. Whether you would like to volunteer, learn skills to re-enter the workforce, refresh existing skills, try a field of work or put back into the community, there are a range of organisations that can assist. This week Hannah Rando a year 10 student from Scone High School joined the team for one week s work experience. Hannah is working in the office and will be learning about the service, what we do and who we assist as well as learning reception skills. She is also filling tool boxes with health information and resources that will be distributed to doctors surgeries across the Upper Hunter Shire as a part of the Virtual Shed Project, said Mrs Watts. Many community organisations are underfunded and under-resourced so any additional help or support is of benefit to the group and the people that use and access the service. added Mrs Watts. The health impacts of long-term exposure to fine particles in the air have been linked to cardiopulmonary disease, which is why both councils are taking the issue of wood smoke so seriously. entertainment scene Warming up in winter at Pigsty Pigsty in July is pleased to reveal the fi nal round of artists that will visit the boutique one-day festival on July 2nd (this weekend) and unveil the timetable for the second-hand formal event. Central Coast indie-rockers Sea Legs has been riding the Triple J airwaves with single Witches Have Friends, and will join the PigSty lineup alongside rising Newcastle rockers In Motion, who have been turning heads with their hard-hitting grooves. Dashville Progress Society (DPS) will also return in 2016. The DPS are a supreme party band comprising of Hunter-based musicians and have become synonymous with Dashville events. The laughs will continue at PigSty in July this year with the return of The Philosophical Bogan Matty B, whose dry musings on the mundane have had crowds at Dashville in hysterics over the past two events. Matty is joined this year by fellow stand-up comics Marty Bright and Daniel Muggleton. These artists join the previously-announced acts, which includes New Zealand hard-rock legends Shihad, plus King Tide, Masco Sound System, Justin Ngariki and the Dastardly Bastards, Claire Anne Taylor and Lepers and Crooks. Once again there will be a mouth-watering array of food available, with Bao Brothers Eatery,MEET, Rustic Pizza, Esty s South American Sausage Sizzle and Forage Espresso all in attendance. It just wouldn t be a PigSty feast without an impressive array of cleansing ales and 2016 s event will provide the best assortment yet. For the more refi ned piglets, there will be a selection of the best local Hunter Valleys wines available. Naturally, as always, the cocktails will be in high demand. The over-18 event takes place in the stunning seclusion of Lower Belford s acclaimed venue, Dashville. Pigsty in July sold out in 2014 and 2015 and this year s edition is anticipated to be no different. So, gents, dust off your suit, and ladies, slip into your fi nest dress all second-hand, of course. The fully-licenced event (no BYO food/alcohol) runs from 11am to 10pm, with both onsite camping and return bus shuttle available from around the Hunter. Tickets are $48 plus booking fee and are currently on sale via www.dashville.com.au HARD ROCK ONSLAUGHT: Lepers and Crooks, livewire rock group from Sydney s inner west will be turning up the heat on the Pigsty stage this Saturday 2nd July.
