Welcome to the Bull Run District 2018 Fall Camporee This leader s guide contains the information you need to make this Camporee a success for your organization. Please read this entire guide, it will explain the rules and logistics for this year s Camporee, and provide a shopping list for your unit to ensure you have necessary supplies prior to arrival. The most successful Units at this year s Camporee will have thoroughly read and attained a complete understanding of all the information covered in this handbook. This Camporee is primarily an activity to enhance the Patrol Method within your Unit. It is also a chance for your scouts to show off their skills. Camporee General Information Directions: Camp Snyder is approximately 10-15 minutes from Gainesville/Manassas VA. From I-66: Follow East towards Front Royal Take exit 40, US-15 South in Haymarket Take VA-55 West Turn Right onto Antioch Road Cross over I-66 Turn left at Camp Snyder Check-In: Check-in is from 6:00-9:00pm on Friday night. Upon arrival please stop at the Administration Building which will be the first building on your right as you enter Camp Snyder. As you arrive you will be assigned a camping area. Campsites will be given out upon arrival at Camp based on the size of each Unit. At check-in Each Unit will need to present a roster of who is in camp for this weekend. Each Unit should also maintain all medical forms for all attendees (BSA Parts A&B only). Units will also be expected to provide payment upon arrival if they have not pre-paid / pre-registered on the Bull Run District event page: https://scoutingevent.com/082-22538 Event fees are: $30 Units should strive to arrive together to simplify the check-in process. Campsites: We will be utilizing the standard campsites at Camp Snyder Open fires are only permitted in the campsite fire pits! Please DO NOT bring your own firewood. Firewood is available in the grass field between campsites 11 and 14. Camp Snyder provides potable water (spigots located near the campsites along the gravel road). Bathhouses should open for use of toilets, if not porta-potties will be provided. (Please see the event map included in this guide for facilities location information) Leader s Guide 4

Vehicles in Camp: All vehicles must be parked in designated parking areas (i.e. parking lot only) and not in the campsite area. ONE trailer may remain in campsite area. All roads leading in and out of camp must stay free of parked vehicles. Uniforms: All Units will need to be in Scout uniform on arrival and for all Flag Ceremonies, and for Sunday departure. Uniforms are optional for Saturday activities. Leaders Meeting: At least one Unit Youth Leader and at least one Unit Adult leader (e.g. Scoutmasters, Team Coaches, Senior Patrol Leaders, President, Team Captains, etc.) must attend a Friday evening leaders meeting at 9:00 PM in the Chapel. Food & Troop Supplies: Troops are responsible for their own food, cooking supplies and tentage. Additional Troop supplies necessary to complete the various STEM activity stations is listed in the section below. Leader s Guide 6

Medical and Emergency Procedures: Bull Run District Fall Camporee medical staff will be available to handle minor injuries and illnesses. Accidents, injuries, and illnesses MUST be reported and treated at the camp medical area located in the HQ pavilion. The Camporee medical officer (Matt Gallagher) will be available during Camporee. If you have an emergency, please notify any Camporee Staff member. The nearest hospital to Camporee is Haymarket Medical Center Novant Health. 15225 Heathcote Blvd, Haymarket, VA 20169 (571) 284-1000 Camp Fire: Saturday evening there will be a campfire at the fire ring to close out the weekend s festivities. Each Unit is to have a song and a skit ready for the enjoyment of the District. The Theme for the sings or skit should be STEM related. Additional information will be provided during the Friday evening leader s meeting/cracker barrel. Camporee Patches: One Camporee patch will be given to each paid participant, this includes scouts and adults. Patches will be distributed at checkout. See design on first page. Religious Observance: A non-denomination religious service will be held Sunday morning. Scouts are strongly encouraged to attend this service. Scout uniform is required. For those wishing to attend Catholic Mass, may do so at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 8213 Linton Hall Road, Gainesville, VA, at 7:00 am, 8:30 am, and 10:30 am. Campsite Inspections: All Units will have a campsite inspection beginning at 12:00 PM on Saturday. Use your time wisely on Friday night and early Saturday so you can be prepared. Check-out: All units need to check out before departing with either Irwin Lazar or Dave Seitz. Once checkout is complete, units will receive patches. Units departing on Saturday evening should coordinate with BRD staff to receive patches before departure. Leader s Guide 8

Battle bots - Sumbots Sumobot is the not-so-ancient art of building Sumo Wrestling Robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS. Scouts will complete in teams of 2-4 scouts per Sumobot two teams per field. Lego Mindstorm Laptop None Dining Hall 9-12PM & 1-5PM Saturday Leader s Guide 14

Bridge Building Challenge Scouts will construct the most durable and weight bearing bridge they can which spans over a gap between 2 tables or with 2 struts on either side of the bridge which keep the center suspended. Weights will be added upon the bridge in 5lb increments to determine its strength. 4 Scouts will be able to construct bridges at a time. Egg Survival Challenge Scouts compete to see who can launch a raw egg the farthest distance without cracking or otherwise breaking the egg. Scouts are restricted to 2 feet of duct table, 12 square inches of cardboard/paper, and 12 square Inches of padding no more than ½ inch thick. Multiple launch attempts permitted. Model Rockets Scouts are encourage to launch model rockets that they built prior to the camporee. All rockets will undergo a safety inspection. No high power rockets will be permitted. Launch pad(s) Rocket o Strongly recommend rockets with streams instead of parachutes. o No multi-stage rockets. Rocket engines o Strongly encourage the use of smaller rocket engines. o Recommend A or at most B rocket engine sizes. Engine wadding Engine ignitors Space port 9-12PM & 1-5PM Saturday SAFETY CHECK-IN OFFICER GUIDELINES 1. Is the rocket structurally sound -- fins and launch lug solidly glued (not taped) onto the body and an appropriate strength/size for the model, body tube not crimped? 2. Does the rocket appear to be stable -- center of gravity one or more body diameters ahead of the center of pressure (which is normally just forward of the fin leading edge)? 3. Does the rocket motor have sufficient thrust to give the rocket a safe liftoff velocity and a delay time that will not result in the rocket having excessive upward or downward velocity at ejection? 4. Is the motor properly restrained in the model -- with an engine hook, or with enough tape that the ejection charge will not pop it out and it cannot be easily removed by hand? 5. Does the nose cone fit properly -- not loose enough to fall off of its own weight, not so tight that significant force is required to remove it? Leader s Guide 18

6. Does the rocket have a recovery system that will return it at a safe landing speed, and is the recovery system packed properly and recently, structurally sound, and protected with sufficient flame-proof wadding that it will properly deploy? 7. If the rocket is high-power, did another HPR certified modeler do a "peer review" of the recovery system's packing? If not, disassemble and inspect it. General Range Safety Rules Follow the directions of the Range Safety officer All rockets must go through our safety check-in. Bring your rocket to check-in ready to fly Rocket flights must occur on our range only. Spectators stay behind the flag line. Air horn is a flight danger warning -- look up. Leader s Guide 19

Paper Airplane Challenge Scouts compete to see who fly their airplane the longest distance and/or the longest time aloft. Scouts are restricted to building an airplane using only a single 8 ½ x 11 inch sheet of plain printer paper. Pinewood Derby Build & Race Same day!! Each unit is eligible to build and race a single pinewood derby car. Two scouts from each unit will build the pinewood derby race cars in the morning and then race them in the afternoon.
