Clifford Smith is one such member and this week he reminded us of a special time in the 1960 s, when he was working with the East Suffolk County Council as a planner. In 1964, there were 33 local authorities. ESCC was the one seemingly adequate, who made the four village bypass on the A12 happen but the biggest priority was to create employment as there had been a huge reduction of jobs in agriculture. There was the possibility of the General Post Office Research moving out of Dollis Hill in London and ESCC wanted to win this bid. They were up against the heavyweights in Glasgow, Durham, Newcastle and Hastings, all of whom had employment problems, like Ipswich. However the GPO staff liked Ipswich the most and aligned with our bid. Cliff told of him hiring a coach to take all the employee management representatives, trade union representatives etc., around the area, including ITFC ground and the Bobby Robson statue, Park and Northgate schools, Felixstowe and villages. From that day onwards, the GPO were pushing for Suffolk and the Ministry of Works authorised 2000 graduate jobs. The decision of where the GPO (now BT of course) was to go still had to be resolved. The former airfield area was the wrong place for communications. The Felixstowe Dock was reawakening and Felixstowe and Martlesham jobs were hovering. Cliff organised all the Highway Authorities from Birmingham to Felixstowe down to the Ministry of Transport with their stats. There was rejection but it prevailed and the Orwell Bridge was born. With the East and West bypass to Ipswich, we were told we have our share, no more major roads. But the government said Ipswich was to be made a new town and doubled in size. Consultants produced a document illustrating expansion options. Another team of consultants in 1968 produced yet more detailed proposals for doubling the size of Ipswich but by the creation of a development corporation. If that happened, we would have had a Stevenage or a Milton Keynes. Cliff s own sketch was adopted, decentralising the population and with the Orwell Bridge, utilising Kesgrave, Martlesham and Belstead. In 1967, the government dropped the idea but they had the bones of a policy to build employment to fit with housing needs and planning. Twenty-thousand jobs were created with BT (then known as PORE the Post Office Research Establishment), Ransomes Europark and Felixstowe Port. Thirty-three local authorities became one county of seven districts in 1974 with Clifford as the first Chief Exec of Suffolk. Although all seven are planning authorities which brings its own problems. This was a fascinating talk well delivered. In giving the vote of thanks, SVP John Button thanked Clifford and, since he already has a collection of Ipswich East coasters, presented it to our special visitor, Dr Derek Murphy Spud who now lives in Westerfield Road Ipswich but was once an active member in the Padstow (Cornwall) club. SVP John explained that Spud and his wife Eileen successfully raised 2M to set up the Merlin support unit for people with MS. Sue Hall

Show em a Red Card! Red cards are available to indicate special dietary requirements. If you ve ordered a salad or have informed Gresham's in advance of special dietary needs (vegetarian or glutenfree, etc.) ask for a red card from the Duty Rotarians which states their meal choice. Place the card on your table to help those serving us to find you. It will also help if you make yourself known to the waiting staff. ORWELL WALK FISHPONDS CHECKPOINT The Rotary gazebo we use at Fishponds is showing its age and losing some of its hangars. It takes a long time to erect and if it is windy (nearly every year) we have to tie it to trees to stop it blowing away. The ground down there is also rock hard and tent pegs do not go in very easily if at all. It has been suggested that there will be more runners this year who will arrive at Fishponds earlier than previous walkers, and we have only just been ready for those! Therefore do any Rotarians own or have access to a camper type van, or Transit with side door, which the team could use for storage on the day? Nothing larger could be parked down there as we need to leave room for one car and the supplies vehicle to turn round. The owner would obviously have to be with the vehicle but the transfer window is still open. It may be possible to borrow a folding gazebo as well to link to the vehicle. Any offers or other suggestions greatly appreciated. John Goodship 6
In support of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich Centenary Fund, to provide a meaningful and enduring legacy for future generations by funding projects that encourage and enable churches to better serve the wider community. The Fund will be managed by Suffolk Community Foundation and aims to support community projects such as making church buildings more accessible to community groups; providing activities for those who are isolated; supporting the work of parish nurses; organising learning activities with local schools; and aiding conservation or environmental projects. It will add value to the work already undertaken by the Church of England in partnership with other churches and organisations. IPSWICH DFAS THEATRE VISIT GUYS and DOLLS 2.30pm Thursday 5 th May 2016 Theatre Royal - Norwich Chichester Festival Theatre s production of Guys and Dolls is coming to Norwich! A coach will depart Rushmere Church car park at 9.30 and pick up at Ipswich Village car park about 9.40. Return will be from the theatre at the end of the performance at about 5pm The cost will be 40 which will include seats in the Rear Stalls, coach travel and drivers tip.
