In fact, looking at the people who have signed up, more than half of our normal participants will be gone. It is starting to get warm here so it will be a nice break to get to the cool mountains. The Texas District Rally just ended and we had four participants attend. We did receive some nice comments about our shirts but unfortunately we did not have enough members at the correct time to enter into the chapter shirt competition. We raced our horse three times and lost three times. The last race we were out of the gate slowly, picked up speed and by the time the race was half done surged into the lead. Unfortunately either the horse thought the race was over or felt sorry for the other horses and just stopped and watched the eventual winner go by. Thanks Candy for decorating our horse. Volume 31 Page 2 of 7 Issue 06 RIDER EDUCATION Controlling Your Lane Two Wheels are enough to own a lane Congratulations to Dean (Web Master) for taking 2 nd place (tied with Chapter Z) in the Web site competition. Chapter U took first place again this year. The two most popular seminars were the ones on tires and traveling armed. The one on tires will be posted on the district web site in the next couple of weeks and we will discuss the other one at our next meeting. Our June meeting will be on the 6 th at 7:30PM at Logan s Roadhouse. Come early (around 6:30PM) for dinner and greetings. Fred and Mandy Mew have stepped down as the district directors and their assistants David and Christina Vidrine have taken over. Their team members have also changed and all their names and positions will be in the July newsletter. Thank you Fred and Mandy for a job well done the last two years. Next year s rally will be the Texas Gumball rally but a location has not been determined. Ride Safe and Often Bruce A. MacMaster Chapter Director By: James R. Davis Lane position should be based, among other things, on establishing escape routes, making yourself visible to others, staying out of the blind spots of other vehicles, and road conditions. What is often overlooked, in my opinion, is the concept of controlling your lane. For example, assume you are riding on surface streets in a city and are stopped at a traffic light preparing to make a right turn. Logic suggests that you should be in the right track of your lane, but it is safer, I suggest being closer to the left track. Why? Because while nearer the left track of your lane you CONTROL the lane. There are people that upon seeing you in the right track with your right turn signal flashing will slide their vehicles into the lane beside you and try to share the lane to get a jump off the line when the light changes. That you only have two wheels is of no consequence you OWN the whole lane that they would try to share with you. If you were to change your mind and elect to not make that right turn, you would be in trouble. Worse, should that sharing vehicle actually decide to make a right turn too, you could easily be forgotten(in his blind spot) and he could drive right over you while making that turn. Controlling your lane is as important as any other consideration when you choose your lane position.
Volume 31 Page 3 of 7 Issue 06 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR I am writing this newsletter before we leave on our trip to South Dakota so don t have any stories to tell about what we saw or did. Stay tuned next month for news of what happened on our trip. The second engineer replied, Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, Take what you want. The first engineer nodded approval and said, Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn t have fit you, anyway. It really is summer now and the kids are out of school so keep a good eye out for them playing outside! You never can tell when a ball or Frisbee will end up in the street with a little one running out to get it without checking to see if there is any traffic. Try to stay cool in this hot Texas heat! Be Safe and Have Fun! Kathy Vallejo Newsletter Editor TAKE WHAT YOU WANT Two engineering students were walking across a university campus when one said, Where did you get such a great bike?
