FAQ S FOR STAFF MEMBERS Who will I be working with? Our staff represents a variety of age groups, backgrounds and occupations. Some staff are college students, some have professional careers such as teaching, and others are pursuing their first job. The typical age range of camp counselors is 18-25 years old. Most staff members come from the St. Louis area. Others come from out of state and some from countries such as England, Australia and New Zealand. Individuals who come to camp serve as role models for young girls, must display maturity and be responsible. Both male and female staff members are welcome. What types of jobs are there at camp? It takes many skilled staff members to make camp a great place! Junior Counselors, Assistant Unit Leaders and Unit Leaders directly supervise girls and lead daily activities such as arts and crafts, sports and nature. Wranglers lead equestrian programs and care for the horses, Lifeguards work at the pool and lake leading aquatic activities, and Program staff deliver programs in outdoor adventure, camp skills, crafts and more. Administrative staff supervise others and ensure the smooth operation of camp. Office staff manage paperwork, program supplies and the Trading Post. Health Services staff keep campers and staff healthy at camp. Is there training for Camp Staff? Yes, training is required as a condition of employment. Each staff member will receive 7-10 days of training depending on the position. Training is called pre-camp and will take place on-site at camp. There are also a few short online trainings which will be required of all staff before pre-camp starts. When is my time off and where can I go? Each camp offers time off daily, as well as some weekend and night time off. Each camp has a Staff House where you can go to take a break. For more specific time off information, please contact the Senior Manager, Camping Program. What s a typical day at camp like? Each day at camp is a new adventure. Girls and staff live in a unit together. Campers participate in activities they choose in the morning, and in the afternoon, they swim and spend time in an activity with their unit. Camp Staff lead activities with the campers while also supervising and providing a safe environment. Each day starts at 7 am with breakfast in the dining hall at 8 am. Breakfast is followed by morning activities, until lunchtime at noon. After lunch, camp takes a rest break, then activities resume until dinner time at 5:30 pm. After dinner, activities include campfires, games and night hikes. Campers go to bed between 9-10 pm depending on their age. When and how much will I get paid? Staff members are paid bi-weekly. You will receive a payroll schedule before camp starts. Salary ranges vary by position. What are the living arrangements at Resident Camp? All our Resident Camps provide room and board for staff when camp is in session. Each camp site varies in the accommodations they offer, ranging from platform tent to cabins to lodges. Staff members will live in the same unit with the girls, and will rotate the units in which they reside. What is the work environment like? The camps are in rural areas near Pevely, Mo. and Troy, Mo. Camp itself has rolling hills, grassy meadows and forests of trees. Staff members will spend nearly all their time outside. Camp is broken up into units, which are living spaces for a group of girls and their counselors to stay. Staff and campers eat most meals in a centrally located dining hall. A central shower house with hot water is used by campers and staff. Laundry facilities are available to staff at both camps. BP 11/17 C-40 5
