This is because the River Great Ouse formed part of the GHQ stop-line part of the backbone of General Ironside s anti-invasion defence plan which was presented to Churchill s War Cabinet in June 1940. The stopline ran the length of the country, parallel to the East coast in order to defend the industrial centres of the Midlands and North... continued on Page 4 & 5

Wartime Remains in Ten Mile Bank & Hilgay from Tony Hall Part 1 Ten Mile Bank continued The Defence of Britain Project, which surveyed remains between 1995 and 2001, records the following location of defences around Ten Mile Bank A Type 28a Anti-Tank Gun House in the garden of a house in Bridge Farm Lane. Now hiding beneath a deck terrace and summer house Three Pillboxes a Type 24 situated midway between the East bank of the River and Modney Hall Farm a Type 24 north of Bridge Farm, east of the river, alongside the old Sam s Cut a Type 24 at Hilgay Bridge Public House, presumably by the old Windmill Inn A Spigot Mortar Adjacent to the pillbox by Windmill Inn. What the Defence of Britain Project does not record are the following: A Spigot Mortar base on the west bank of the river just south of Fairview Cottages A pillbox in the corner of a field at the back of Rice s Farm, off Station Road The purpose of these defences, manned by the Home Guard and local troops, would delay the advance of enemy forces at the river until reinforcements arrived. These consisted of elements of the 2 nd Armoured Division and 43 rd Infantry Division based further inland which would respond to code words. George would send them to the Brandon and Thetford area and Percy to the Fens to meet an invasion from the Wash. Apart from those by the old Windmill Inn which were swept away by the new bridge works, all of these defence works can still be seen. They were built to withstand the might of the German war machine so will probably still be around for another sixty years. In my next article, I will cover wartime remains in and around Hilgay. If you have any further information regarding local remains, I would be interested to hear from you by email at: tony@tenmilebank.com 4

HILGAY PLAY TRAIL Official Opening 18.2.11 Here are the people that made it happen From left to right Jon Green Diocese of Ely, Hannah Masters BCKLWN Jackie Squires BCKLWN, Graham Carter Hilgay Parish Council, and Anita Stewart and Rebecca Nicholson who made a dream into reality! A plaque is to be put up at the Play Trail in honour of Anita and Rebecca. The Play Trail users had only limited patience with the adults stopping their play to perform an opening ceremony.. after all talking is boring, and scissors are for cutting.. so why wait? Many thank to Emma Martin for arranging the refreshments.. and THANK YOU to everybody who has helped to create this Play Trail. Judging by the hoards of youngsters playing there daily it can be said IT IS A HUGE SUCCESS. Visit facebook: Hilgay Village NEW Community Park 10

RYAN MEETS THE QUEEN from Marie Walker On the 2.2.11 The Queen and Prince Philip visited The West Norfolk Deaf Assoc. & Ryan Walker, aged 11, from Hilgay was there to meet them! Ryan, who is a member of the Childrens Deaf Society, showed The Queen how to use a Wii console. After a particularly good move, The Queen told him good shot"! Ryan, who moved to Hilgay with his mum Marie and Brother Aaron (14) four years ago, attends Hilgay VC Primary, and was only fitted with hearing aids last May after suffering numerous ear infections. He joined the West Norfolk Children Association soon after and has benefited by meeting other deaf and hearing impaired children and attending various functions they have organised. Ryan, Aaron and Marie are in the process of learning sign language to be able to communicate better with others during their visits to the centre. They have also participated in fund raising events for the centre after government funding was cut.
