The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria s (Judi Dench) remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favor with the Queen herself. 6 Hilgay Riverside Academy School Governors Have you ever considered becoming a school governor and supporting the staff and pupils at our village schools? We have vacancies and the Academy Trust would like to hear from anyone who might be interested in making an application. Further details are available from; Jacqueline McCamphill Governance, 26 St. Thomas Place, Cambridgeshire Business Park, Ely, CB7 4EX. Tel or governance@demat.org.uk We are very excited to be using our new classrooms, as phase one of the building work is now complete. Phase two is the work in the hall which is due to be completed by the beginning of March. Once all of the work is completed, we will be inviting in members of the community to see the changes! Throughout all of the work, the children have continued to work hard and try their best. Recently, we began a project to improve the teaching and learning of writing. This has been a great success and the children have produced some fabulous writing this term! We participated in NSPCC Number Day which involved all of the children across the federation dressing in number themed none uniform. This included all sorts from football kits with numbers on them to onesies and tutus! We raised almost 90 for this great charity. Page 4

We are now looking for volunteers to cover the other parts of the village. For more information please contact Nigel Congdon on or him at The old Football Hut Site The old football hut at Hilgay has been removed and there is Parish land in that area now needs a bright new purpose. Does any residence have sensible suggestions as to what it could be re purposed for? One suggestion has been put forward already and that is for a sensory garden, a quiet place near to the cemetery to sit or walk and reflect. The Parish Councillors will be meeting at the site (weather permitting) at 6:30 pm prior to the full Parish Meeting on 5th April 2018 at 7pm. Residences of both Hilgay and Ten Mile Bank are invited to attend to view the amount of land available and then offer up suggestions there and then or at the Parish Council meeting that same night or by correspondence shortly after that meeting. Your views and suggestions will be very welcome. correspondence can be forwarded to the Parish Clerk at hilgayparishclerk@hotmail.co.uk Written correspondence can be handed in to any Parish Councillor, their contact details are listed on Parish Noticeboards and in this Riverside News Willow Lodge, Manor Road Hilgay Willow Lodge is former sheltered housing in Hilgay. It has been empty and unused for several years and the Parish Council is concerned about its future. The site is owned/managed by Freebridge Housing. We have written to them to express our concerns about the site and its future and to ask what Freebridge intend to do with Willow Lodge. Freebridge have told us that Willow Lodge is one of several sites they are appraising, but cannot let us have a timescale for this process. Also they cannot give us any assurances about the future use of Willow Lodge, but have undertaken to keep us informed of developments. If members of the community wish to let us know what they would like the future of Willow Lodge to look like, please let us know via the Parish Clerk. Page 9

12 Appeal re parking on Ely Road, Hilgay It has been noticed that the number of cars parking on Ely Road, from the Cemetery access road on the left hand side heading south past Foresters Avenue, has significantly increased lately. This is causing some inconvenience to other road users. Would those parking here park elsewhere if that is at all possible please? Also while on the subject of parking are you parking legally at night? You need to park facing the right way, you do need parking lights, as street lighting is switched off after midnight. If you are parked causing any obstruction to footpath or highway users you may be and can be held liable if any incidents occur. Remember the highway and footpaths are for users not Parkers Also you most likely have to inform your insurance company where you park. If you don t you may not be insured to do so.? Please Think Gardens needed for Archaeological Test Pit Excavations in Hilgay Over the two days of the 1 st & 2 nd May 2018 Access Cambridge Archaeology (ACA) as part of the University of Cambridge, want to excavate small 1m 2 test pits in the gardens and open spaces of Hilgay village as part of the Independent Learning Archaeology Field School (ILAFS). These excavations are undertaken by local secondary school students, who after the first two days of excavation in Hilgay, a third day is spent in the University of Cambridge analysing the excavation results in discussive learning sessions which aim to engage and challenge participants, prepare them to produce a written analysis for assessment as well as provide an inspirational and positive experience of higher education. After the field school, learners receive detailed individual feedback on their data collection, personal, learning and thinking skills developed during the fieldwork as well as their reporting and research skills exhibited in the written assignment, which will support applications to further and higher education. ACA have been running the field school programme since 2005 across East Anglia ( that aims to raise the aspirations, enthusiasm and attainment of year olds with regard to higher education by making a valuable contribution to current academic research at the University of Cambridge. For the May excavations we are looking for gardens, flower beds, allotments & even fields where we can excavate these small hand dug 1m x 1m test pits. The test pits themselves cause minimal damage and are fully restored at the end of the excavation. You don t need to be in during the day, the students are constantly supervised and all equipment is provided by ACA. Please contact Bill Howard if you d like to volunteer your garden for us to dig in, or just to find out more information, please him on bill@hilgay.myzen.co.uk or phone Page 10

16 Hilgay s Railway by Tony Hall Parish Past and Present A Look at Local History Riverside News readers under the age of 60 are unlikely to remember the railway station that carried the name of Hilgay. A slightly misleading name as it was situated about three miles (5km) from the centre of the village. Any villagers wishing to catch the train would have had to make their way along the A10 to Modney Bridge Road, over the river at Ten Mile Bank and down the long straight mile of Station Road almost an hour s walk. The station was opened on 25 th October 1847 by the East Anglian Railways Company. It was originally called, more accurately, Hilgay Fen. In 1862, it became part of the Great Eastern Railway and on 1 st October 1896 it was renamed Hilgay station, despite its distance from the village it purported to serve. This map of 1903 shows the station. You can see the crossing over Station Road, the goods yard with cattle pen and the Railway Tavern This view of 1911 clearly shows the double track and the busy goods yard. The Railway Tavern can be seen on the far left. Page 14

17 In June 1939 Hilgay station hit the headlines when a southbound train hit a lorry on the occupation crossing at Cross Drove just north of the station. Before it could stop, the derailed train struck some wagons in the goods siding, causing four deaths and a lot of damage. The subsequent enquiry attributed the accident to the gross carelessness of a lorry driver who did not see the approaching train, despite the long straight track in either direction. This picture from the Cambridge Daily News shows the extent of the destruction after the accident. The same crossing where, sadly, a Downham Market man lost his life as recently as 2012 This is an extract from the last timetable to feature trains to and from Hilgay. It covers the period 9 th September 1963 to 14 th June 1964 and shows only seven trains a day stopping there. The asterisk by the name highlights an ominous footnote stating: This station may be closed during the currency of this timetable and in this event, appropriate notice will be given. And so it was that Hilgay Station closed less than two months later on 4 th November 1963, after serving the area for 116 Years. So as you drive over the crossing on the road to Welney, take a look to your right. The only remains of the Station to be seen are the former Railway Tavern and a concrete yard now used for agricultural storage. Copyright Tony Hall 2018 Page 15

18 Parish Council Matters Street Lighting Hilgay & Ten Mile Bank Below are two diagrams showing the street light with their unit numbers that are maintained by the Parish Council. Hello Residents Have you noticed the new LED street lights that have been put up in the Parish? Ten Mile Bank has had all the old bulbs replaced with these new, more efficient and cheaper to run LED fittings. Hilgay has had any existing defective lights replaced with LEDs and the remaining Parish Council controlled street lamps will be replaced with LED fittings as and when they fail. Remember some street lamps are under the control and maintenance of Norfolk County Council and it will be their decision as to when or if they are changed to LEDs. The Parish street lamps that have the new LED fittings in them are guaranteed for 10 years and will reduce the energy consumption and therefore the energy charges that the Parish has to pay. In fact it was calculated that the energy savings to run these more efficient LED lamps, together with the reduction in the maintenance contract costs, would pay for their purchase and installation within seven years. That of course was taking a best guess at what the cost of energy would be in seven years time! Who knows? There is also a claimed advantage of reduced light pollution, which I think is good when we have a fantastic rural view like this, especially in Ten Mile Bank. The Parish Council would be interested in what people think about these new street lights, so if you wish to pass on your views to any Parish Councillor or the Parish Clerk about this or any other matter please don t hesitate to do so. The Parish Councillor Contact details are listed in Riverside News and are also posted on the Parish Council noticeboards. Page 16
