With a huge force of over 150,000 soldiers, the Allies attacked and gained a victory that became the turning point for World War II in Europe. This famous battle is sometimes called D-Day or the Invasion of Normandy. Omaha and Utah Beaches American troops landed at Omaha and Utah beaches. The Utah landing was successful, but the fighting at Omaha beach was fierce. Many US soldiers lost their lives at Omaha, but they were finally able to take the beach. After the Battle By the end of D-Day over 150,000 troops had landed in Normandy. They pushed their way inland allowing more troops to land over the next several days. By June 17th over half a million Allied troops had arrived and they began to push the Germans out of France. Interesting Facts about D-Day The troops needed the light of a full moon to see to attack. For this reason there were only a few days during a month when the Allies could attack. This led Eisenhower to go ahead with the invasion despite the bad weather. The Allies wanted to attack during high tide as this helped the ships to avoid obstacles put in the water by the Germans. Although June 6 is often called D-Day, D-Day is also a generic military term that stands for the day, D, of any major attack. The overall military operation was called "Operation Overlord". The actual landings at Normandy were called "Operation Neptune". Source: www.historyinanhour.com

Page 3 Travis Says, SURFSIDE DEPUTY REPORT DEPUTY T. OSTGAARD MAY 28th, 2015 JUNE 3rd, 2015 05/28 I was contacted by a subject waiting for the bus at 306th and M Place. I had taken a harassment case from him about a month ago and he wanted some things added in to the report. Later in the day the subject called in to report that his in-laws that are harassing him will be here in June and he wanted advice on what to do when they get here. I attempted to contact the subject at his residence and by phone, but was unable to contact him. On 05/29 I was dispatched to the 29900 block of M Place for a theft report. The reporting party stated his roommate kicked him out and refused to give him his belongings back. I advised the R/P that he has the right to get his belongings from the residence and it was a civil matter, not a criminal matter. I contacted the roommate later in the day and she stated that the R/P is an alcoholic and he had only paid rent for ½ the month. She stated they had an agreement to trade a washer/dryer and refrigerator for rent. On 05/29 I was dispatched to the 29600 block of H Place for an assault call. The reporting party stated he went to retrieve his water heater from a house it was being stored at and he was assaulted by the person living in the house now. The R/P stated the suspect just suddenly pushed him over for no reason. The R/P did not wish to pursue charges for assault, but wanted to know how to retrieve his trailer that he had agreed to sell to the suspect. I advised him that was a civil issue. On 05/30 I was sitting at 299th and M Place watching traffic when I observed a driver I knew to have a warrant and a suspended driver s license. I attempted to stop the vehicle and it failed to stop for me. I followed the vehicle for a few blocks and it went down a side street at a high rate of speed. The driver skidded to a stop in front of a residence and then ran on foot. Before I got out of my patrol car the suspect was already behind the house in the brush. I attempted to locate the suspect on foot for about 20 minutes, but was unable to. On 05/31 I observed a driver in the 30400th block of M Place that I knew to have a suspended driver s license and multiple warrants for his arrest. I also observed the female passenger whom I recognized and knew she had a warrant for her arrest. I stopped the vehicle and took the driver in to custody for driving on a suspended license. The jail would not take either subject on their warrants. The driver was cited and released for driving on a suspended license. Page 11 Architectural Committee Just a reminder if you are planning on installing a fence or a shed, a garage or a house or even doing a little remodeling all building plans must be submitted to the Architectural Committee prior to any construction. The committee usually meets weekly on Tuesdays at 9 a.m., dependent upon if there s anything on the agenda. All applicants are encouraged to attend the meeting (if possible) to answer any questions that may arise. The building packets are on our website at http://www.surfsideonline.org/payment-form/ or you can pick one up from the business office. Two (2) sets of plans must be submitted to the committee. Once approved, you will get a copy of the plans that have been stamped so you can take to the county for their approval. For more detailed information on the Architectural Committee duties and guidelines you can find them on our website www.surfsideonline.org, or call the business office 360-665-4171 with any questions. Pacific County Permits will take 8-10 weeks before being reviewed! If you are planning on building this summer get your plans submitted ASAP!

Page 12 Stop! Before you burn, consider the Alternatives! Smoke and lungs do NOT go well together. Smoke that enters human lungs leaves behind all kinds of nasty materials that affect our health and well-being. But when we burn our yard and garden debris, we breathe the smoke produced, and so do our kids, our families and our neighbors. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SMOKE! If your smoke impacts a neighbor, you may be fined! Minimize the smoke from your recreational fires by keeping the fires small, and by burning ONLY clean, dry firewood or charcoal. Do not burn green or wet wood and never burn trash. A DNR Fire Safety BURN BAN exists statewide JULY 1 through SEPTEMBER 30 each year. No land clearing or large debris burning allowed. State law prohibits outdoor burning at all timed in Urban Growth Areas and associated cities. Burn Barrels are ILLEGAL throughout Washington! For more information, contact Olympic Region Clean Air Agency 360-539-7610 or www.orcaa.org
