Chapter Director Richard Mummey 3 drwrcr688@msn.com April showers bring May flowers...is that correct?? Well, have not seen rain yet but we need it and hope the flowers bloom to keep my bees happy. Last month was the second gathering with Max and myself leading. I would like to thank Max, Christy, Chris, Dave, Grace, Larry and Sam for helping during the gathering. Last month was also our first after gathering ride, only three went on the ride, it was a ride to Socorro, NM via secondary roads. The ride back was different. Greg Phillips, Christy and I were it. Greg decided to turn and burn back to Albuquerque. Christy and I had a bite to eat at Socorro Springs Brewery and headed back into 2 sand storms, 40mph+ wind gusts, and a brown colored bike. Hope this months ride will be less windy. Just attended the combined F,N and W social held at Casa de Benavidez. The food was delicious, conversation lively, wait staff great and everybody left with a full belly. Those attending: Max Stefoin, Chris Boyle, Tricia and Gary, Keith and Teresa Morrison, Joe and Nancy O, Jerry and Becky Stillwagon, Dave and Lisa Bachman, Tom Brewer, Christy and Richard. As Chapter W was the host, last raffle ticket drawn had they dinner paid for and the Stillwagon s were the lucky recipients. There are a few events coming up. April 16th is the 40 to Phoenix held in Moriarty starting at 5pm. Check your emails for more information. Also that day at 4:30am, a group will be at KOB news promoting the event. This ride looks to have approx 130 plus riders from all over the country heading into Moriarty and will be picking a few more for their next stop into Phoenix and GWRRA headquarters. Next is the May Motorist Awareness event held in Farmington on May 12, followed by an ARC on May 18-19 and the last Region rally in Midway, UT, May 25-27. This month s ride: We will be heading to Santa Fe using NM313 to San Felipe Casino, I-25 to exit 267 and on to E. Frontage Rd to Bonanza to Creek Rd (SR45) to NM14 and Madrid and to Cedar Crest and a possible stop at Burger Boy. Roadrunner: We had no returning trikes last month, so the top riders in the bike division: Chris Boyle 1,767 miles, Richard Mummey 729 miles, Larry Veltman 97 miles. Thank you Dave Bachman. Marble game is down to 4 marbles and approx. $177.00. See you on the 15th!! Richard Mummey Be Heat Wise and Remember to Hydrate GWRRA Chapter W Albuquerque, New Mexico March 2018 Page 3 of 19

District Education Notes 5 Chris Boyle chris224068@yahoo.com Riding Strategies We all know that operating a motorcycle, or any vehicle for that matter, is not a passive activity, but a complex task that involves more than just knowing how to use the throttle, clutch, brakes, counter steering, etc. We require visual, cognitive (thinking and reasoning) and motor skills. In the below chart, these three distinct skills are transformed into three easily understood terms and they are Search, Evaluate, Execute. The common acronym for this is SEE. We have all heard this term or similar acronyms used to describe this concept. How this relates to us is explained below: Search means to actively scan and identify factors that could create increased risk. We should maintain a continuous scan of our riding environment, which also means effective use of the mirrors. If we keep our eyes moving and scan the mirrors, we can achieve nearly 360 degrees of awareness. Scan at least 10 seconds down the road to avoid last minute surprises, watch side road traffic, avoid blind spots, and expect other drivers to do the unexpected which they certainly will. Evaluate means to consider potential problems arising from what has been identified during the Search. We then use our cognitive abilities to think and reason if what we see presents a danger to us. If we have enough time to evaluate a situation, our reasoning and previous experience may provide options for us to consider. Execute refers to the physical motor skills used to prevent or avoid the resulting hazards that have been identified and evaluated. Actions that may be taken range from no action to braking (emergency or non-emergency), stopping, swerving, lane change, sounding the horn, etc. Admittedly, Search, Evaluate, and Execute happens almost on a subconscious level for most of us. However, SEE is an active, visual, thinking activity and strategy that places responsibility on each of us to reduce our riding risk. SEE connects a thinking process with visual perception which makes clear that we should all have an effective traffic strategy so that we can SEE AND BE SEEN in traffic. Think SEE next time you ride.
