TRIP 18-V-1 July 12-20, 2018 Day 1 Denver Arrive and transfer on your own to the Denver hotel. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Overnight Hilton Garden Inn, Denver. Day 2 Georgetown Loop Railroad This morning we board a deluxe motorcoach for the drive up Clear Creek Canyon to Georgetown. Here, you enjoy lunch followed by the first scenic rail excursion of the tour: a journey on the narrow-gauge Georgetown Loop Railroad. The train s original route connected the mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume and was designed as a corkscrew, with horseshoe curves and four bridges. After your picturesque journey along the narrow-gauge railroad, embark on a scenic drive along the Front Range to Colorado Springs, your home for the next two nights. This evening, enjoy dinner. Overnight The Antlers or Marriott Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs, CO. (B, L, D) Day 3 Pikes Peak Cog Railway / Garden of the Gods This morning, board the world s highest cog railway, the Manitou Springs Pikes Peak Cog Railway, and ascend to the 14,000-foot summit of Pikes Peak. After this excursion, proceed to the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center for lunch. Your day continues with a narrated tour through the red rocks of the Garden. Overnight The Antlers or Marriott Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs, CO. (B) Day 4 Scenic Drive to Durango Today, we drive west over the Rockies and cross the Ute, Trout Creek, Poncha and Wolf Creek Passes en route to the San Juan Mountains and Durango. Traveling from Colorado Springs to Durango, look for wildlife and enjoy views of the parks and mountains of central Colorado while traveling to the base of the Sawatch Range. After lunch in Salida, our guide explains the history, culture and geology of southern Colorado as we enter Luis Valley and skirt the southern edge of the San Juan Mountains. Overnight The Strater, Durango, CO. (B) Day 5 Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Embark on the steam-powered Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad s ascent of the Animas River Canyon to the ghost town of Silverton today. The climb begins in the valley of the Animas River before the canyon narrows, all roads vanish and there is only the railroad for 30 miles. Views of the glacial green waters of the Animas and the 11,968 ft. to 14,321 ft. peaks of the San Juan Mountains dominate. You have time for lunch and exploration on your own in Silverton before returning to Durango by coach. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. Overnight The Strater, Durango, CO. (B) Day 6 Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Early this morning, the group drives to Chama, NM to board the longest narrowgauge steam railway in North America: the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. The route follows the former Denver & Rio Grande San Juan Extension for 64 miles over Cumbres Pass and through the San Juan Mountains. Past the divide, the train enters the deep canyon of the Rio des los Pinos (River of Pines). There is a stop for lunch in Osier, after which the train s journey continues past Toltec Gorge. Your day concludes in Alamosa, with the evening at your leisure. Overnight Holiday Inn Express, Alamosa, CO. (B, L, D) Day 7 Rio Grande Scenic Railroad Today s excursion takes us along the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad from Alamosa to La Veta. This line restores passenger service to La Veta Pass, a summit last crossed by regularly scheduled passenger trains over 50 years ago. Continue by coach to Great Sand Dunes National Park, where towering sand dunes rise up above the valley floor against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Overnight Holiday Inn Express, Alamosa, CO. What You Need To Know about traveling with "The Century" WHAT WE ARE If you enjoy trains and travel, we have a lot to offer you! The 20th Century Railroad Club is an educational and historical organization (incorporated not-for-profit) dedicated to promoting the advantages and celebrating the history of travel by rail. WHAT WE DO Since 1971, the 20th Century Railroad Club has specialized in planning unique rail oriented trips for its members, their guests and the public. Most of our trips include at least one ride on a train or trolley. In recent years, 20th Century has teamed up with tour providers for some of our trips, to offer superbly structured tours all around the U.S., with professional escorts. Some of our trips are loosely structured to allow our passengers to choose exactly how and where they will spend their time at a destination, In such cases we will provide information on available destination options. You should think of traveling with the Century as an adventure a unique experience that may not be entirely predictable, but is nearly always much more fun than you'd have on your own! WHO CAN GO? YOU CAN! Unless a trip is marked for Club members only, anyone may travel with us. Of course, our members receive advance notice of all our trips in our monthly newsletter, THE FAST MAIL, and are always first in line for the limited space available. If you re not yet a member, we invite you to sample our public trips and our members meetings before deciding to join our Club. TYPES OF TRIPS We offer five categories. First are One-Day Adventures by various modes. Second are Getaway trips: These are two to four-day trips via Amtrak and/or other carriers. They usually span weekends and are open to the public. Third are Vacations with the Century : These special five- to ten-day trips, which are open to the public, are the most elaborate we offer. Travel and lodging arrangements are made by the club or a tour operator with expertise in group travel by rail and other carriers. These vacation packages are among the finest available to the train-oriented traveler, and are designed to offer the highest value for your travel dollar. Fourth are chartered trains, which are open to the public and usually travel to destinations not accessible by regularly scheduled service. Fifth, we may offer trips available only to our members. Other trips may not be listed in this Catalog, and instead will be advertised in our monthly newsletter for members, THE FAST MAIL, or posted to our website. Sixth are Private Varnish (PV) tours. What are they? Travel on special or historic railcars, rebuilt and upgraded to ride the rails in wood paneled luxury, complete with first class accommodations. Vista domes, observation cars, and meals cooked on board fit for royalty. Best of all, upon reaching your destination city the train itself is your hotel, centrally located for touring. Our PV train sets are quite possibly the finest rail passenger cars to ride American rails. Absolute elegance! We have taken the service and rail cars of the past and upgraded everything to today's far higher standards... for you! WHY WE DO IT: There is still a special magic to traveling by train. It's a chance to travel in comfort and style; to slow down, settle back, watch the scenery and enjoy a journey the carefree, car-free way. As Agatha Christie wrote, Trains are wonderful To travel by train is to see nature and human beings, towns and churches and rivers in fact, to see life. So, come on along for a ride on the railroad it s the most civilized form of land transportation.
