Duke ALUMNI TRAVELS Magical Madagascar June 10 22, 2019 optional extension to Anjajavy June 22 25 dukealumnitravels.com

W e invite you to be part of this exclusive and remarkable adventure through Madagascar, one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. There is no other trip to Madagascar like this one. In addition to the many splendors of that unique island country, you will experience exclusive areas not open to tourists. The Duke Lemur Center has been working in Madagascar for 30 years and we will have access to rarely visited areas, Duke connected conservation projects and people. You will meet with conservation and research experts, providing a truly unique experience. This trip is perfect for first time Madagascar visitors as well as for those returning to Madagascar for a second or third trip! Madagascar is home to all of the world s lemurs (some 100+ species) and over half of the world s chameleons, in addition to more than 170 species of frogs. Every year scientists discover new species of plants and animals in Madagascar s deserts and forests. Traveling with you: Madagascar is a nature lover s dream. It is also an exceptional photographic destination, where many of the animals are habituated, providing remarkable photographic opportunities. Our exciting itinerary is custom-designed by Charlie Welch and the experts at Terra Incognita Ecotours to cover some of the island s highlights, including six different eco-systems with a diversity of wildlife and photographic subjects. We have chosen these six stops to showcase the incredible diversity in landscape flora and fauna common to each of these areas. In keeping with the principles of responsible ecotourism: Charlie Welch worked and lived in Madagascar, with his wife Andrea Katz, from 1989 until 2004 on behalf of the Duke Lemur Center (DLC), and later the Madagascar Fauna Group (MFG). During that time Welch and Katz developed the conservation center at Parc Ivoloina and Betampona Nature Reserve into multifaceted community-based conservation projects which continue to operate today. Charlie is now conservation coordinator at the DLC. He continues to foster DLC s close involvement with the MFG projects, and in 2011 initiated the DLC-SAVA Conservation project in northeastern Madagascar. In 2004 Welch and Katz were awarded Chevalier de l Ordre National by the government of Madagascar for their long-term conservation efforts in the Tamatave region of eastern Madagascar. We will employ local people. We will use locally owned and operated lodges and outfitters. We will use local goods and services. This is a journey that will make a positive impact on you and the areas we visit. To reserve your space, please fill out and return the reservation page at the back of this brochure, or call Duke Alumni Travels at (919) 684-2988, or email travel@daa.duke.edu. For logistical questions, please call Terra Incognita Ecotours at (855) 326-8687.

Duke Alumni Association Magical Madagascar June 10 22, 2019 with optional 4-day extension to Anjajavy: June 22 25 June 10 Monday Arrival in Antananarivo, Madagascar Today you should plan to arrive in Antananarivo, either on the South African Airways flight from Johannesburg, or Air France from Paris, or perhaps an alternate routing such as Air Seychelles through the Seychelles. Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar, is affectionately known as Tana. Upon arrival, clear customs and meet our private transfer to the Hotel. Overnight at Hotel Colbert June 11 Tuesday Antananarivo to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park This morning we depart for the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, an important area of protected rainforest, and home to the largest of the lemur species the Indri. We will stop at the incredible La Mandraka Nature Farm en route. This private zoo has an excellent collection of native reptiles and amphibians and offers wonderful opportunities for close-up photography. Our destination is the luxurious Vakona Forest Lodge located in an idyllic wooded setting. In the afternoon we will visit Vakona s Lemur Island for an up close and personal experience with various lemur species. Charles Welch will present his first lecture tonight an overview of Madagascar, and the island country s stunning biodiversity. Overnight at Vakona Forest Lodge June 12 Wednesday Andasibe-Mantadia National Park We spend the morning visiting one of Madagascar s most celebrated reserves, with an early start to see the Indri and hear their haunting calls. Each animal sings with its own unique voice, so the echoes and re-echoes tell each group where every Indri is located in the forest. We track Indri through the forest, and moderate walking provides a good opportunity to experience the abundant flora and fauna of the eastern rainforest. In addition to other species of lemurs, the world s largest chameleon can be found here, together with a wonderful array of tree frogs and geckos, plus numerous colorful tropical birds. In the afternoon, for those with energy to burn, we will support locals committed to protecting forests by visiting a nearby community reserve. We return to the lodge and this evening we may take a night walk to look for nocturnal lemurs if we are lucky we may catch the eye shine of the diminutive brown mouse lemur, greater dwarf lemur, or even the avahi (or eastern woolly lemur). Overnight at Vakona Forest Lodge

Duke Alumni Association Magical Madagascar June 10 22, 2019 with optional 4-day extension to Anjajavy: June 22 25 June 13 Thursday June 14 Friday June 15 Saturday June 16 Sunday Andasibe-Mantadia National Park to Tamatave Today we travel by road from the wet mountain forest to the east coast port city of Tamatave. Charlie will give a short presentation on the Madagascar Fauna and Flora Group (MFG), which manages Parc Ivoloina. Overnight at the Calypso Hotel Tamatave / Parc Ivoloina Today we visit scenic Parc Ivoloina where DLC conservation coordinator Charlie Welch and his wife Andrea Katz started a conservation project in 1987. The conservation work continues at Ivoloina under the MFG, of which DLC is a founding and managing member. Activities at Ivoloina range from programs in environmental education, to sustainable agriculture, to reforestation and training. This evening Charlie will give a presentation on DLC s SAVA Conservation project. Dinner tonight is at the lively Ocean 501. Overnight at the Calypso Hotel Tamatave to Sambava Fasten your seatbelts! On an exciting charter flight into the rarely visited Sambava (SAVA) region, enjoy spectacular views of the eastern coast and lowland rainforests. We check into the beachside Orchidea Beach Hotel, where you can stroll for miles along the white sand beach watching local fishermen pull in their daily catch. The DLC s conservation initiative in northeastern Madagascar is based in Sambava, and features community-based conservation alongside research and student volunteer programs amidst the backdrop of the Marojejy massif. During our time in the SAVA region we will visit fish farms, meet farmers harvesting new crops, and visit a school filled with Malagasy children eagerly learning about conservation. Overnight at Orchidea Beach Hotel Sambava to Andapa We drive today to Andapa, one of the most strikingly beautiful landscapes of Madagascar. Throughout the SAVA region, a member from the Duke SAVA Conservation Team and Duke students will join us to discuss the SAVA region and project work. We will also meet with other Duke project leaders to learn about various Duke research and service projects within Madagascar. Overnight at Hotel Beanana

Duke Alumni Association Magical Madagascar June 10 22, 2019 with optional 4-day extension to Anjajavy: June 22 25 June 17 Monday Andapa to Sambava This morning we visit some more of the dramatic landscapes and amazing conservation partners, and after lunch we head back to Sambava. Driving through the SAVA region will delight all of your senses witnessing the freshly picked vanilla and coffee drying along the roadside. June is the start of vanilla season in Madagascar and Sambava is the vanilla capital. Smell the fragrance and purchase this heavenly bean to take home. Overnight at Orchidea Beach Hotel June 18 Tuesday Sambava to Diego Suarez, drive to Ankarana We board another charter flight. Our destination is Diego Suarez on the northern tip of Madagascar. We experience the rich French cultural center of Diego and visit the bustling market to see what will be for dinner in a typical Malagasy home that evening. Then we depart Diego to head for the tsingy landscape of Ankarana, where we may encounter the crowned lemur, Sanford s brown lemur, the northern sportive lemur and dwarf lemurs. A variety of chameleons and leaf-tailed Uroplatus geckos may also be found sunning on the rocks. Overnight at Ankarana Lodge June 19 Wednesday June 20 Thursday June 21 Friday Ankarana A full day today to explore the tsingy habitats of Ankarana. We shall search for the crowned lemur, Sanford s brown lemurs and anything else we missed after our arrival yesterday. We shall also marvel at how anything at all can survive on this hostile landscape of jagged rocks! Overnight at Ankarana Lodge Ankarana to Montagne d Ambre Today we leave the tsingy of Ankarana and drive to the Montagne d Ambre National Park. A splendid example of montane rainforest on a volcanic massif, the park has broad trails and some fascinating flora and fauna, with a very comfortable montane climate. Most importantly we are now closer to the Diego Suarez airport, from which we fly back to Antananarivo tomorrow. Overnight at Nature Lodge Diego Suarez to Antananarivo Today we plan to fly back to Antananarivo and you could choose to depart this evening on the Air France flight that leaves shortly after midnight, or you can plan your departure for tomorrow. Whether you stay or leave, we will enjoy a Farewell Dinner at the comfortable Relais des Plateaux. Everyone has a room, whether leaving tonight, departing tomorrow or joining the Anjajavy extension. Overnight at Relais des Plateaux Hotel

Optional 4-day extension to Anjajavy June 22 25, 2019 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED June 22 Saturday Antananarivo to Anjajavy This morning we take a private charter flight to Anjajavy, a resort only accessible by air! The luxury resort consists of 25 well-appointed bungalows set in a fairly large private reserve bordering two wide deserted beaches, some mangroves, small tsingy karstic limestone formations, and offering many aquatic activities as well as several hiking possibilities, most notably to the neighboring Sakalava villages of Anjajavy and Ambodro Ampasy where the owners of the resort have been very supportive in building a dispensary, a primary school, and starting several micro-lending schemes. The lodge s private nature reserve just behind the landscaped garden has a varied fauna and flora, with some remarkable endemic species such as the delightful Coquerel s sifaka, lovebirds, Cuvier s spiny iguana, abundant malachite kingfishers, pygmy kingfishers, and much more. Overnight at Anjajavy June 23 Sunday Anjajavy Today is at leisure to explore the grounds of Anjajavy and marvel at the incredible array of wildlife so easily viewed here. There are Coquerel s sifaka seemingly everywhere, troops of brown lemurs, Madagascar fish eagles are regularly seen as well as a vast array of other bird-life: vangas, lovebirds, Vasa parrots, and so much more. The resort really is a haven for wildlife! Of course you can also just relax by the pool, swim in the ocean or even go snorkeling! Overnight at Anjajavy June 24 Monday Anjajavy Our last full day to relax before the flights home, and a day to reflect on the true magic of Madagascar. We can still choose from the range of activities on offer here, or just relax at the pool and enjoy afternoon tea in the Oasis. Overnight at Anjajavy June 25 Tuesday Anjajavy to Antananarivo and flights home Relaxed breakfast this morning and a chance to pack before our flight back to Antananarivo. Upon arrival we either transfer to the International Airport for flights home, or we have day rooms at a nearby hotel for those who have later onward flights. Please ensure your flight home is no earlier than 3:00 p.m.
