UPDATED JUNE 10, 2012 Benjamin Putman of Henry County Missouri Benjamin Putman was a son of Wilson Putman. He was born July 15, 1804 in, I believe, Rutherford County North Carolina, however in the 1850 census he lists South Carolina as his birthplace. He moved with the family to Tennessee and married Mary (Polly) Buchanan there in Rhea County on January 9, 1823 by Rev. Farmer (June 7, 1823 according to another source). Mary was born in Tennessee on December 7, 1805. They appear on the 1825 tax lists. Benjamin first appears as a head of the household in the 1830 Rhea County census where he and Polly have a teenage female over 15 years (possibly a relative, a sister?), and three sons and a daughter under ten years of age. An 1838 Rhea County list shows they have five school age children in District 5. About the same time the rest of the family moved to Alabama, Benjamin and his family headed west into Missouri. He ended up in Henry (Rives at the time) County in the late 1830s. The last child born in Tennessee was born in 1836 and they were in Rives County for the 1840 census. In 1840, while living in Springfield, Missouri, they had seven sons and one daughter at home. In 1850, he was 45, Mary 44, Newton 24 TN, Emeline 22 TN, Israel 20 TN, Lafayette 18 TN, Van Buren 13 TN, Sarah 6 MO, Ellen 4 MO, Jane 3 MO and Wilson 1 MO. Benjamin Putman died on September 16, 1862 and Mary died May 29, 1890. Although Benjamin Putman was fifty-eight years old, he may have died in the Civil War as an old bible record reads, 'died by the ruthless hand of war, September 16, 1862.' Benjamin and Mary Putman's these children were: RUFUS PUTMAN born December 28, 1823. He married Lavina Jane Stockton on October 25, 1849. Lavinia was a daughter of James S. Stockton. They were married in Polk County Missouri. They went to California and he was in Rough and Ready, Nevada County California and was a gold miner. His son James was born in California in 1855 so they must have come in the 1850s. He was there through the 1900 census when he was 72 and Lavinia was 71. Their children were: James B. Putman born in 1855. Charles P. Putman born 1858. Willis Putman born in 1862. He is married to Josie Lewis in San Francisco in 1910 and widowed there in 1920. Amos Putman born in 1865. He was married to Jessie A. Hill in 1930 in Prairie County Montana. I don t find him in 1910 or 1920. There is a record that he married a Mabel and they had a daughter Inez born in 1918. So Jessie seems to be a second wife. John Hughes Putman was born January 1, 1855. He is in Fossil City, Wheeler County Oregon in 1900 to 1920.
