January 2015 President's Message It s been A Great Year. 2014 was a very busy year for the Meadowlarks. We drove some unchartered roads, saw some beautiful countryside, toured some interesting places, and learned many technical skills during our Tech Talks and while out driving our A s. It looks like 2015 will have the potential for many more adventures for all those with the time and determination to get out and drive. I am 2015 Officers and Board pleased to be handing the reigns over to Greg Bowden and the new Board who will do an outstanding job organizing and leading the club through the 2015 New Year. Hope to see you all at the Banquet January 10 th. Upcoming Events "Indoor Air Show" at the Strategic Air and Space Museum Saturday, January 17th 2015 Meet at McKinney's Grocery Store in Gretna at 10:30 AM. We will drive to Ashland for an 11:00 lunch at Parker's Smokehouse, followed by a short drive to the museum. On this day, the entire restoration hanger will be devoted to model airplanes and helicopters flying demonstrations for the public. It sounds like an exciting and interesting event as we get to witness an air show, in Nebraska, in the middle of winter! Additionally, you can tour the entire museum at your leisure, which is supposed to include the new General Curtis LeMay exhibit. General LeMay was a former commander of the Strategic Air Command. More information about the museum can be found at: http://www.sasmuseum.com/ Information about Parker's Smokehouse in Ashland: http://www.parkerssmokehouse.com/ There will be a sign-up sheet at the annual banquet. If you are not attending the banquet but wish to attend the indoor air show on January 17th, please let Greg Bowden know so we have an accurate head count for lunch. 2015 Regional Meet in St. Joseph, MO This is the info posted at the NW Missouri web site at http://www.2015regional.com/ : The host hotel for the event will be the Holiday Inn, St. Joseph, located near downtown St. Joseph. The hotel has easy access to the highway and plentiful, secure parking. If you re more comfortable bringing your Model A on a trailer, parking is available in the hotel parking area. We will be taking road trips to scenic locations such as the Conception Abby, the Lost Creek Wind Farm, and Shatto Dairy. We ll drive to Lathrop Missouri Fairgrounds for a tour and photo shoot. Of course there will be lots of good food, fellowship, ladies events, technical seminars, and the ever popular Hubley Derby. Keep an eye on their site. The registration information should be posted soon. 2016 Regional / MAFCA National Convention Mile High Country Colorado is waiting for you... When: June 19-24, 2016 Where: Loveland, Colorado Why: For a great Model A time in the Rocky Mountain State! Not much info available yet, but contact information and trip planning ideas are available at http://www.milehighcountry2016.org. 3

Past Events December Eat-out Eleven Meadowlarks attended our December Eatout at Pizza Ranch. The photo shows Ken Krueger, Mike & Marilyn Cahalane, and Ed & Susan Dellinger waiting politely for the rest of us to arrive before they hit the buffets. Others attending were Bob & Janet Benton, Bob & Mary McKinney, and Don & Janet Graves. Hen s Nest No Hen s Nest this month because we will be partying! Be thinking about what kind of activities would be fun for the ladies to do when the guys are occupied with Tech Talks. Those were the days My most recent A parts order, from one of the most recognized parts dealers, included floormats. When I wrote down the price of each mat (about $59 plus shipping), it made me think this is a lot of money for a couple of pieces of rubber. I also thought of my 1930 Western Auto Supply catalog. So, just for the fun of it, I checked the price of floor mats from Western Auto. The standard mat, like we get today, was 88 for an all rubber front mat for 28-29 closed cars. An optional felt-backed rubber mat was $1.45. Plus, here s the clincher they paid the postage. Makes me think about the old saying Boy, those were the days. Yeah, I guess they were, but people back then probably thought those prices seemed high. So, what do we do? Either pay the current price and tell ourselves this is a real quality item, or do without and go with a piece of carpet from wherever, which hopefully looks twice as nice. See you down the road and don t be surprised if I check out your front mat. DG Editor s Note: According to answers.com, the average annual salary In 1930 was $1,368, but there were many unemployed. In contrast, the Social Security Administration says that the average annual salary in 2013 was $44,888. If I did the math right, today s price is still about twice as much in comparison to the average annual salary. JKG 5

This form has several purposes but one of the most important is to have members acknowledge that they are members of at least one of the national clubs and that their vehicles are covered by liability insurance. These are requirements of our national club charters and our insurance company. A new section on the form asks you to check how you want your e-mail address used. This will help us avoid sending e-mail messages to members who don t want them. Don Graves, the Membership Chairman, will be asking you to complete and sign the new form soon. We need to have a form for you on file before you attend any driving event. We need to have your MAFCA and/or MARC membership numbers, so please bring them to the February meeting. If you don t know your number, watch for your next issue of The Restorer (MAFCA) or Model A News (MARC) and check the label. Sunshine Report Please keep these Meadowlarks in your thoughts and prayers: 6 Frank Cooper has been hospitalized after a fall at a grocery store. Karen Wickey s step-dad, who went on the Ballowwn and Bridges tour with us, passed away just before Christmas. Our condolences to Karen and family. Mike Tritsch His knee surgery has been postponed until June. Good News! Doug and Vicki Heeren will be traveling to Italy to visit their daughter, who is a Sister with the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara. While this is good news, they could use our thoughts and prayers for their safe travel. If you have Sunshine news about any of our members and would like to share it, please call Mary McKinney at 402-332-3993. That includes good news, too. Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Henry Ford News about a Former Member According to the New Horizons newspaper, Meadowlark former member, Norma Johnson, has won the Dale Wolf award for a poem she entered in the Poetry Across the Generations contest. Norma now lives in in a condominium on the Lake of the Ozarks. Norma received a prize of $100, which she spent on gasoline coming back to Omaha to receive the award. Thanks to Dale Freyer for contributing this information.
