1. 1962 Rachel Carson publishes Silent Spring, an environmental discourse which inspired an environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2. 1966 Buffalo Bayou Preservation Association was founded 3. 1967 George Mitchell, founder of the Woodlands Development Corporation, was the first President of the Buffalo Bayou Preservation Association 4. 1967 Terry Hershey testifies before the Senate Appropriations Sub- Committee at the invitation of George H.W. Bush 5. 1969 Our name officially changed to the Bayou Preservation Association

6. 1970 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is created 7. 1971 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers cancels Buffalo Bayou channelization project 8. 1971 Citizens Environmental Coalition is founded 9. 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amended (known as Clean Water Act ) to set forth national fishable and swimmable goal, create surface water quality standards framework, discharge permitting system, wastewater treatment grants program, surface water quality assessment program, and total maximum daily load program. It became law over President Nixon s veto. 10. 1972 The Buffalo Bayou Regatta was begun by the Houston Canoe Club, nicknamed the Reeking Regatta. The race was later run by the Buffalo Bayou Coalition and is currently organized by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership.

11. 1973 The Flood Disaster Protection Act is created, making the purchase of flood insurance mandatory for the protection of properties located in Special Flood Hazard Areas 12. 1978 A Federal Health Emergency is declared for the Love Canal area, later becoming the nation s first Superfund Site 13. 1983 Hurricane Alicia struck Galveston and Houston. The eye of the storm passed directly along Interstate 45 and through downtown Houston 14. 1985 Texas Department of Transportation begins the Don t Mess with Texas campaign 15. 1986 The Buffalo Bayou Master Plan is created by the City of Houston
