1 Book One Bundy Project Overview: 1 Book One Bundy is an exciting community engagement project initiated by the Bundaberg Family and Baby Network (FAB) working in partnership and collaboration with Bundaberg Regional Libraries First Five Forever Project and the broader community of Bundaberg. The project, running since 2016, promotes early language and literacy across 52 weeks a year using a simple, accessible book for 2018 we have chosen the book I m a Dirty Dinosaur by Janeen Brien and Ann James. The focus of 1 Book One Bundy is raising broad awareness of the importance of early language and literacy development and building relationships with our community s parents/children around literacy. The project is part of a broader community campaign that is targeting early language and literacy (of 0-5 year olds) that is a direct response to our local Bundaberg Australian Early Development Census statistics. The AEDC measures children s development across five domains. The latest 2015 census reports that 27.6% of children in Bundaberg are developmentally vulnerable on one or more domains and 15.3% of Bundaberg children are developmentally vulnerable on two or more domains. The data below shows the percentage of children developmentally vulnerable in Bundaberg in comparison to Queensland and Australia: Language: 10.3% Bundaberg compared to 8% Qld and 6.5% Australia Communication: 10% Bundaberg compared to 10.5% Qld and 8.5% Australia Physical: 12.8% Bundaberg compared to 12.4% Qld and 9.7% Australia Social: 14.8% Bundaberg compared to 12.4% Qld and 9.9% Australia Emotional: 13.3% Bundaberg compared to 10.1% Qld and 8.4% Australia How you can participate Here s how you can join in! I m a dirty DINOSAUR Resource Guide One Book One Bundy Engaging with Language and Literacy Turn your book corner into a Jungle! Offer a variety of books about dinosaurs and jungle animals Decorate with a palm trees and vines Decorate with children s artwork, posters, and figurines of dinosaur and jungle animals Include soft toys and cuddly cushions making the space an inviting area to read in Read I'm a Dirty Dinosaur and ask questions before, during and after reading Before Reading Place a plastic dinosaur inside a 'story bag'. Ask the children to guess what might be in the bag by providing clues such as: I lived a very long time ago I have sharp teeth and spikes Ask: What do you know about dinosaurs? What do dinosaurs look like? Look at the cover of the book and ask the children - What can you see? Where do you think this dinosaur has been playing? During Reading Explain the meaning of difficult words such as 'snuff' and 'snout'. Ask children to predict what may be coming next. What do you think the dinosaur will do next? Point to the dinosaur's body parts, ask children to point to their own and do the actions for each part of the story. After Reading Ask Which parts of the dinosaur's body became muddy? How did the dinosaur get clean? What do you think the dinosaur is thinking about at the end? What do you think he will do next? What other animals like to get dirty in the mud? What was their favourite page/s? Why? Ask the children to recreate their own page from the story. Using the same words but with their own illustrations. Act out the story - with everyone pretending to be the dirty dinosaur. Write a sentence or story about fun things you like to do in mud, water or sand e.g. "Jump, jump, jump, jump, Jump in muddy puddles!" Make your own Dinosaur Lift the Flap Book! Collect pictures of dinosaurs Cut them out stick one dinosaur on each page Cut a piece of coloured cardboard large enough to cover the dinosaur Use sticky tape and stick down one side of the card to make a flap Add simple words and phrases to describe each dinosaur Staple all the pages together to finish off the book
Dinosaur Templates Use the dinosaur templates to:- Colour and decorate, display them around the room and make your own story board. Make puppets, use paper or material, cut out two of each template and glue or sew together Make puzzles, print onto card, colour then cut out into puzzle pieces. On a large piece of paper, draw an outline of a Tyrannosaurus Rex or Stegosaurus footprint. Have the children estimate how many children's feet would fit inside the T- Rex footprint. Trace each child's footprint on the T-Rex footprint (or have children make a cut-out of their footprint to glue on to the T-Rex footprint) and then count the number of footprints. Matching and Comprehension Games Match names to dinosaurs Match book text to dinosaur illustrations Write the sayings and match to dinosaur illustrations Match dinosaur noise words to the jungle animals Make two identical sets of dinosaur pictures. Place the pictures face down on a table or on the floor and mix them up. Have one child turn over a picture. Then have him/her turn over another picture to try to find its match. Play until all the pictures are matched. Draw up a large graph. Write the name of a different dinosaur at the top of each row next to a picture of each dinosaur. Have children select their favourite dinosaur from the selection of cardboard cut-outs. Children glue their favourite dinosaur in the corresponding row. Word sequencing activities Match body part words to dinosaur pictures Match body part pictures to the word and write a sentence about each picture Cut out many different sized dinosaurs. Ask the children to line up the dinosaurs from largest to smallest. Sensory Play Digging for Dinosaurs Put sand in the water trough, or use sand trays. Use a dinosaur puzzle or laminate a dinosaur picture and cut in to pieces. Place the puzzle pieces in the sand. Allow the children to dig for the puzzle pieces as if they were digging for dinosaur bones using their small brushes to find them. As they find the pieces they can put together the puzzle. Alternatively, hide the pieces of the puzzle in the sandpit and have a small group of children try to find them. Or hide dinosaur fossil bones in the sandpit Have children re-tell the story with a plastic dinosaur and a tub of rice cereal or chocolate yoghurt and a bowl of water Small World Play Create a 'dinosaur land' in the water trough by placing a few centimetres of sand in the trough and some water.
Use lots of different materials to create the dinosaur scene like oats, hay, grass and water; sticks, soil, mud and coloured rice for the landscape. Re-enact experiences from the book. Make dinosaurs walk around the fields, splash in the mud. Make dinosaur sounds. Talk about what you are doing as you go using simple language. Tissue paper collages Using dinosaur images from the story, draw the story animals onto paper, card or plates Decorate each dinosaur using coloured tissue paper. Display the artworks in sequence and spend time reading the story from the pictures. Dinosaur Wash Add soapy water to a large water table. Gather dinosaur toys Dip the dinosaurs into the water and use sponges to wash them down. Talk about what you are doing, use language that describes your actions. Playdough/Clay Play Use small toy dinosaurs to make dinosaur fossils and footprints in the play dough. Make dinosaur models out of clay. Make a dinosaur foot print (use clay model of footprint to create a dinosaur footprint trail). Dinosaur Eggs Mix bicarbonate of soda with water to make a paste. Press a dinosaur figurine into the paste and cover with more bicarbonate of soda to make an egg shape. Let the egg dry and harden. To hatch your dinosaur, spray the egg with vinegar. The bicarbonate of soda and vinegar will have a chemical reaction and will foam up as it dissolves. Imaginative Play Dinosaur Play Dough Use dinosaur shaped play dough cutters Use dinosaur toys with the play dough (feed the dinosaurs with green play dough grass; make yellow dinosaur eggs etc). Use lots of colourful playdough and set a dinosaur scene using toys and animals before play begins. Perform "I'm a Dirty Dinosaur" with instruments and props Build a dinosaur out of box collage and then papier mache the dinosaur Draw dinosaurs on cardboard and have children paint with 'mud paint' Draw a dinosaur and collage it Have children create their own dinosaur tail by tearing pieces of newspaper and stuffing them in the end of an old stocking - tie the end of the stocking around the child's waist Exploring Dinosaur Hide and Seek Hide dinosaur toys throughout your environment.
Ask children to go looking for the toys. Help by giving clues like, Look in the sandpit behind the yellow bucket etc. Tie string around the dinosaur toys so they can be hung in trees, playground equipment etc. Take turns with children and adults hiding the toys. Using your claws, grumble and growl; Just like Tyrannosaurus on the prowl. Music and Movement Dinosaur Circle Games and Movement Dinosaur dancing - discuss different ways the dinosaurs moved. Walk slowly like a triceratops, run fast like a compsognathus, etc. Play some instrumental music and let your child move or dance around like a dinosaur. Make dino footprints and put in a circle on the rug (use double-sided tape to stick the footprints down). The children then go around in a circle stepping on the footprints. When the music stops the one not on the dino footprints is out. This child gets to play the music until the next person is out. This way no one feels left out. Tie large paper grocery bags on the children's feet. The sacks will be their dinosaur feet. Let them stomp around to music.
Dino, Dino, who has your bone? This game is played with one player closing his/her eyes. One of the other players hides the bone. When ready, all players sing, "Dino, Dino, who has your bone. Somebody stole it from your home. Can you guess who?" You could use one of the bones from the Bundaberg Libraries kit for this game. Recreate the story based on the theme of I m going on a Bear Hunt book. Replace Bear with Dinosaur. For example, while singing the I m going on a Dinosaur Hunt song, act out the hunt within your setting.
