A New Global Landmark: Astana Expo 2017 Paris 1889 Seattle 1962 Shanghai 2010 Milan 2015 Astana 2017 The first World s Fair or Expos as they are known today was held in London in 1851. Expos have given the world many of our most iconic architectural legacies. They have also introduced the public to transformational technologies and inventions from the diesel engine to the escalator as well as fax machines, personal computers and mobile phones. Each Expo convenes millions of people from around the world in the host country where they gather to share the hopes and challenges of their times as expressed through their selected theme. For Astana Expo 2017, the theme is Future Energy and the dramatic solar powered spherical museum and exhibition at its center will follow in the tradition of other great Expo monuments to innovation while also reflecting an inspiring expression of Kazakhstan s cultural traditions and the future aspirations of the country and the hope for peace and prosperity among all nations. 8 Kazakhstan United States Convention 2015
About Astana Expo 2017 The theme of Astana Expo 2017 is Future Energy. The Expo will help us look at energy from a common, global viewpoint that takes into account the challenges facing humanity safeguarding our health and the environment while boosting economic and social development. This balance depends on many elements and is everyone s responsibility. Kazakhstan believes it is time we had an Expo focused on energy. One where every nation is invited and every stakeholder is welcomed. An Expo that looks at energy from every angle; economic, environmental, security and equity. And it s time we all did more than simply imagine the future, but commit to the principles that will get us safely there. That Expo and that time is Astana Expo 2017. From June 10 to September 10 of 2017, Kazakhstan s capital city of Astana the UNESCO declared City of Peace will host an exposition unlike any other. A worldwide competition was held and the winning design went to Chicago-based architects Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture for their bold and visionary design. Work on the iconic architecture of the 280 acre site all of which is powered by renewable energy will be completed within the next year and ready to welcome the estimated 5 million visitors from more than 100 countries around the world who will be visiting Astana Expo 2017. 9 Kazakhstan United States Convention 2015

Astana EXPO 2017 Key themes To address this crucial question, Astana Expo 2017 has identified three themes that present an overview of the state of energy today, and to showcase sustainable solutions and technological innovations. Reducing CO 2 Emissions Developing low carbon energy technologies and reducing energy demand are crucial to reduce the CO 2 emissions causing climate change. Solutions such as carbon capture and storage, renewable energy technologies, the use of hydrogen, the development of nuclear fusion technology and more will be showcased, explained and experienced during Astana Expo 2017. 11 Kazakhstan United States Convention 2015 Energy Efficient Technologies Energy efficient technologies, education, behavior, policies and regulations can have a strong impact on the way energy is consumed. The Expo will present solutions and best practices for the renewable production and sustainable use of energy. Sustainable Energy for All Energy is a basic need and a human right. It is essential for sustainable development and for combating poverty says the United Nations. Yet 20% of the world population still does not have access to electricity. Astana Expo 2017 will showcase the solutions that are available now and being developed to achieve the goals of the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative of the United Nations.
Kazakhstan Green Bridge to the Future Kazakhstan is leading by example and energy diversification is key to the country s sustainable development. By 2050, Kazakhstan aims to generate half of its energy needs through wind, solar and hydroelectric power. Already a land bridge between Europe and Asia, Kazakhstan is working towards becoming a green bridge, a crucible of green energy industries from which the region, indeed the world, will benefit. In addition to the spectacular and inspiring exhibitions, cultural and entertainment events, Astana 2017 s capstone achievement and legacy will be the cooperatively-produced declaration of values and principles, designed to guide all nations to a pragmatic and sustainable energy future. Reflecting the urgency and importance of new energy research and policies, this declaration will take the form of a manifesto guide and inspire all of us who care about our future. The Kazakhstan United States Convention will be your opportunity to get an early look at the inspiring work underway and to develop opportunities for participation by your organization with Astana Expo 2017. 12 Kazakhstan United States Convention 2015
Kazakhstan and the New Silk Road For five centuries from 100 BC to 1500, the ancient Silk Road that passed through Kazakhstan served as one of the world s most important trade routes connecting Asia with Europe and Africa. Today, a new Silk Road with its modern day infrastructure of railways, airports, highways, processing and shipping facilities is being built across Kazakhstan. Silk Road projects are being financed with more than $150 billion already committed from China, Kazakhstan and the United States. The Kazakhstan United States Convention will enable U.S. companies to learn more about business and investment opportunities provided by the new Silk Road in agriculture, energy, ICT, infrastructure, investment banking, mining and tourism. Convention sponsors will be able to engage in direct meetings and presentations with the public, private, bilateral and multilateral donors who are financing projects throughout the new Silk Road. 13 Kazakhstan United States Convention 2015
