Pray for Mildmay October 2018 - April 2019 By sharing our joys and challenges and bringing them before God, you can be part of what He is doing through Mildmay, transforming the lives of people living with and affected by HIV. www.mildmay.org Registered charity no. 292058
Who we are Mildmay is a Christian charity delivering quality HIV care and treatment, prevention work, rehabilitation, training, education and health services in the UK and East Africa. Charity is held to be the ultimate perfection of the human spirit, because it is said to both glorify and reflect the nature of God. Saint Thomas Aquinas Dear Friends, Welcome to our latest prayer diary and thank you for joining our prayer community. By sharing your prayers with Mildmay, you are helping to support our work and mission. In June 2018, I joined Mildmay as the new Chief Executive and I am delighted to be heading this wonderful charity and working alongside a great team. Mildmay s mission to reach those in great need, both in the UK and in Africa, is a demonstration of the Christian values that are central to my own life. In July I made my first visit to Mildmay Uganda and Mildmay Kenya. There I met some of the people and communities who benefit from the incredible projects and care delivered by the teams on the ground. Our UK hospital continues to achieve great things, rehabilitating people back to independent lives both through our inpatient unit and day therapy. The future is as always challenging and there is still much to do, but with this great team and your support and prayers, we know we can continue to reach out and change lives. Thank you. Yours faithfully Geoff Coleman Chief Executive
Prayers for October I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. John 8:12 For our work, join us in thanksgiving as Mildmay marks 30 years working at the forefront of HIV services and care. For those supporters, churches, trustees and Helen Taylor Thompson, our Chair in 1988, who opened Mildmay as a specialised hospital for people dying of AIDSrelated illness. Their resolve to carry out Gods work in the face of great opposition brought care, compassion, love and peace to many at their time of great need. May this clarity and strength of purpose remain strong within all our hearts. That the many complexities and challenges surrounding HIV are overcome and a cure will be found. Prayers for November Therefore, as God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12 For Mildmay Kenya s projects addressing prevention, education, risk reduction and behaviour change for young people and adolescents - 29% of all new HIV infections in Kenya are among this group. For the families, friends and loved ones of those people who have died from AIDS-related illness. Let s pray too for an end to the stigma, ignorance and judgement that many people living with HIV still face today.
Prayers for December 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. Luke 2:13-14 For all those who do not have friends or families to share Christmas time with, for those who are struggling with sickness, difficulties or heaviness of heart. May the joy in the Christmas message bring the gift of gentle peace. For our Mildmay nurses, doctors, chaplains, facilities and kitchen staff, who work across Christmas, providing warmth, care, good food and cheer for our patients. For Mildmay s Christmas Carol Concert, that it will bring light and joy into the hearts of those who are able to share this occasion. Please pray that people will choose to support Mildmay s work as part of their charitable giving this Christmas. Prayers for January You crown the year with Your goodness, And Your paths drip with abundance. Psalm 65:11 As we welcome in a new year, for the success of Mildmay s new projects in the UK and in Africa that bring health and life in all its fullness for so many. For our Art Therapy, now expanded to reach patients in our UK Inpatient Unit. This work feeds into our patient s rehabilitation, relieves stress, promotes self-expression and increases self-esteem. For Mildmay Uganda s training programme for healthcare professionals creating new nurses, midwifes, lab technicians and clinical officers.
Prayers for February 37 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. Matthew 22: 37-39 For those volunteers who give their time, talent and experience so generously to Mildmay s UK hospital, making a huge difference to our work. For the Community Health Volunteer training programme in Africa and the households they reach. Pray especially for the vulnerable children and expectant mothers whose lives are saved and enriched by this care. Prayers for March Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27 For those in our care in the UK and Africa, their families, friends and loved ones. May they find light in their hearts and the strength to manage their many challenges. May Mildmay help to sow hope through our treatment, encouragement and care. For all our staff and volunteers who work so tirelessly across the Mildmay family. May their expertise, knowledge and experience continue to transform lives and be shared with other health care professionals.
Pause for thought Every single minute matters, every single child matters, every single childhood matters. Kailash Satyarthi Although Mildmay Uganda is now an independent charity with its own board, Mildmay UK fully funds the paediatric ward known as Elizabeth Ward. This is the only facility in the region providing high-quality care to children with the most complex cases of HIV-associated health conditions. In Uganda, 1.4 million people are living with HIV and there are 150,000 new HIV infections in babies and children every year. The treatment and care provided by Elizabeth ward is critical for the 250 children seen by the hospital each year. There are also around 1,500 indirect beneficiaries including family members, communities and partners, who are reached with HIV prevention and information which can then cascade down to the community as a whole. Once a child has been admitted to Elizabeth Ward they are able to access emergency food supplies and basic materials to ensure children are not repeatedly readmitted. Caregivers are trained to build and encourage support within the home, assess and ensure the child s well-being, protection and education. They make sure the child attends vital clinic appointments and takes their HIV medication. Please pray that Mildmay will be able to continue to provide this flagship service and centre of excellence that saves and benefits so many lives.
