Epic Lewis and Clark Journey Lewiston, Idaho to Portland, Oregon August 11 19, 2017

Epic Lewis and Clark Journey LEWISTON, IDAHO TO PORTLAND, OREGON AUGUST 11 19, 2017 Dear Friends, Sixteen months into their two-year journey, and with the Continental Divide behind them, Lewis and Clark looked westward toward the final phase of their expedition to the Pacific. Their arrival in canoes at the confluence of the Columbia and Snake Rivers led Clark to write that the waters looked foreboding. Yet only perseverance would allow them to reach their destination. The Nez Pearce Indian nation was one of more than 70 that the expedition met. Lewis and Clark s negotiations and feigns at friendship postponed later violent clashes between U.S. citizens and Native American peoples, and the expedition s detailed observations of native ways of life would preserve tales of the dying customs of defeated nations. Lewis and Clark s decision to move their camp to the south side of the Columbia River near present-day Astoria, Oregon, was taken with a vote that included their Native American companion Sacagawea and an enslaved African called York. This is said to be the first time in American history that a woman and a slave were allowed to vote. With the Pacific within their reach, the expedition constructed Fort Clatsop, officially establishing possession of the region for the United States. Shortly later they would conclude their long trek back to St. Louis and then Washington with a wealth of specimens and written accounts that would blaze a literal trail for future pioneers and an intellectual record of one of America s earliest ventures into the unknown. Please join me as we journey together retracing the steps of Lewis and Clark. Roger Smith

Hood and Mt. Adams, on the south bank, The Dalles is a perfect photographic spot. Discover the area where Lewis & Clark camped at Rock Fort Camp during their historic journey to explore the Louisiana Purchase territory in 1805 and 1806. DAY 3 PENDLETON, OR / RICHLAND, WA Pendleton is known for its beautiful countryside, indigenous Native American tribes, and network of underground tunnels created a century ago for illicit activities. The area is also famous for its lucrative wool trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. Looking through the lens of The Hanford Reach National Monument and the Columbia River is the Reach Museum in Richland which tells the rich and fascinating stories of the culture and history of the region through engaging exhibits, artifacts and tours. DAY 5 STEVENSON, WA Named after early American settler George H. Stevenson, this town rose to prominence quickly due to economic expansion made possible by the Columbia River. The Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center showcases the area s unique cultural and historical diversity, from the Native American tribes that inhabited the gorge, to Lewis and Clark and 19th-century loggers.

overlook, bear witness to the awesome power of the volcano whose eruption in 1980 scorched 230 square miles of forest land and forever changed the landscape. Expert guides will show you the pumice plain and lava dome as they explain the effect the volcano had on the lives of those in the surrounding towns. DAY 6 CRUISING THE COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular river canyon cutting the only sea-level route through the Cascade Mountain Range. A popular recreational destination, the gorge holds federally protected status as a National Scenic Area. The cliffs of the gorge look down on quaint riverfront towns and exhilarating waterfalls. DAY 8 ASTORIA, OR A nationally significant historic region at the western end of the Lewis & Clark Trail, Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. In the winter of 1805-06, the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition was headquartered at Fort Clatsop. In 1955, a replica of the fort was built near the original site and was eventually named a national monument. With its steep hills and beautiful Victorian homes, Astoria has been called the Little San Francisco of the Pacific Northwest and has a revitalized downtown ideal for shopping and dining. DAY 7 MOUNT ST. HELENS, WA Perhaps the most impactful of all landmarks in the region is Mount St. Helens. From high on an DAY 9 PORTLAND, OR Situated between the waters of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, Portland s history is forever entwined with the fortunes of the great rivers.
