Significant Days of the Month International Kite Festival (7-15 January) The International Kite Festival, or Uttarayan, takes place in Gujarat. It indicates the approach of the harvest season called Makara Sankranti. The first kite festival was celebrated in 1989. The festival is celebrated across many cities of Gujarat and Rajasthan like Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Nadiad. National Youth Day (12 January) In 1984, the Government of India declared the birthday of Swami Vivekanand, 12 January, as National Youth Day. It was felt that the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth. On this occasion, different people participate in several activities all over India (and many parts of the world as well) which promote youth in the field of education, art, culture and hope to generate moral values with the enlightenment of the inner soul. Makar Sankranti (14 January) Makar Sankranti is celebrated across South Asia in a myriad of cultural forms. Sankranti marks the end of winter season and the beginning of a new harvest or spring season. It is described as the holy phase of transition. It is celebrated and is known by different names across different regions. It is widely celebrated as Lohri in Punjab, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Uttarayana in Gujarat, Shishur Saenkraat in Kashmir Valley, Makara Sankramana in Karnataka, Bhogali Bihu in Assam and Khichdi in Uttar Pradesh and western Bihar and Maghe Sankranti in Nepal and Thingyan in Myanmar. Republic Day (26 January) Republic Day commemorates the day when the Constitution of India came into force replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India. The Constitution was passed by the Constituent Assembly of India on November 26,1949 but was adopted on January 26,1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country s transition towards becoming an independent republic. 26 January was selected for this purpose because it was this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress.
