the Adirondacks & Hudson River Valley 2013 Evergreen Director s Trip / September 24 29 Dear Friends, Please join me on a new and truly exciting exploration of America s beautiful New York State one that will extend from the natural treasures of Lake George to the artistic and architectural riches of the mid- and lower-hudson River Valley (September 24 29). Participants will be introduced to the rustic yet luxurious retreats commissioned by society s elite at the turn of the nineteenth century, as well as the posh Beaux-arts grandeur of Vanderbilts and Roosevelts. Architectural gems will include iconic examples by James Renwick; McKim, Mead, and White; Marcel Breuer; and Wallace K. Harrison, among others. Art will span centuries, from the Italian Renaissance to some of the most contemporary expressions of paintings and sculpture, with an understandable highlighting of the celebrated Hudson River School and the work of Cropsey, Kensett, and Church. As should be expected, the wines, cuisine. and accommodations will prove among the best representations available. As ongoing supporters and friends of the Johns Hopkins University Museums, we are offering you the opportunity to join us on this special adventure. The trip price is $2,600 based on 20 travelers, of which $300 may be considered a tax-deductible charitable contribution to Evergreen Museum & Library. As you ll read in the following itinerary, the all-inclusive trip includes domestic flights, accommodations based on double occupancy, private ground transportation, extensive and unique cultural activities, and exquisite meals. Please complete the enclosed Reservation Form and return it with your deposit of $500 per person by June 24, after which time deposits cannot be refunded. Full payment for the trip is required by August 14. This trip has already generated significant interest and the number of travelers is limited. Reservations will be recorded in the order that completed forms and deposits are received. If you need additional information, please contact Phyllis Feldmann at pfeldmann@jhu.edu or call the museum at 410.516.0341. I hope you will be able to join us in this speciallytailored tour! Sincerely, James Archer Abbott Director and Curator Evergreen Museum & Library The Johns Hopkins University

All that is within me cries out to go back to my home on the Hudson River. Proposed Itinerary Cover: The main lodge at Camp Sagamore. This page: Wilderstein / Great Camp Sagamore / Richard Serra installation at Dia:Beacon / Montgomery Place / Lake George. Right: Jasper Francis Cropsey, Evening on Hudson, 1885 / Springwood at Hyde Park Tuesday, September 24 Lunch & Dinner Fly nonstop baltimore to albany and drive by motorcoach to saratoga springs for lunch at Mulligan s at the McGregor Links Country Club. Then it s off to glens falls for a guided tour of the Hyde Collection, a modern museum offering the authenticity and charm of a historic house filled with antiques, tapestries, and art, and two main galleries with changing exhibitions. Louis and Charlotte Hyde acquired the majority of the collection during a 50- year period of avid and highly informed collecting. We ll check-in for a two-night stay at the historic Fort William Henry Hotel, located on an estate spanning the southern shore of lake george. Our welcome dinner will be in the hotel dining room. Wednesday, September 25 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Begin the day in the hamlet of blue mountain lake with a visit to the Adirondack Museum, where we ll discover over 200 years of Adirondack history. The campus-like setting of this Smithsonian of the Adirondacks offers indoor and outdoor exhibits, historic buildings, extensive collections, beautiful gardens, and magnificent views. Lunch will be at the museum s Lake View Café. In raquette lake we ll enjoy a guided tour of Great Camp Sagamore, a National Historic Landmark built in 1897 as the wilderness estate of the Vanderbilt family. This extraordinary icon of the early Adirondack lifestyle is considered by many to be a protypical Great Camp of the region. Combining a refined architectural style with the local red spruce, northern white cedar, and granite stone, it set a precedent that later served as a model for the public buildings in our National Parks system. Dinner is in lake george at the historic Boathouse Restaurant, located in an 1876 lake shore boathouse. franklin delano roosevelt EXCLUSIVE HIGHLIGHTS Discover the Hudson Valley s rich artistic heritage. Experience exclusive, specially arranged tours and programs. Enjoy luxurious accommodations in historic hotels.

Thursday, September 26 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Drive to albany to explore the Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza, a vast government complex of modern marble and steel buildings surrounding a central span of rectangular reflecting pools. Our guided tour of the art collection will feature more than 90 Abstract Impressionist paintings, sculptures, and tapestries, plus we ll visit the Corning Tower Observation Deck for stunning city views. Driving south we ll lunch at the Tavern at Diamond Mills before reaching beacon for a guided tour of Dia:Beacon, a must-see spot on the contemporary-art circuit showcasing Minimalist, Conceptual, and Post-Minimalist art. Housed in a former historic Nabisco factory, Dia:Beacon s expansive galleries are on a scale of which other museums can only dream, with over 240,000 square feet of naturally lit exhibition space. Continuing to bear mountain, we ll check-in for a one-night stay at Overlook Lodge perched alongside Hessian Lake. Dinner will be in the hotel restaurant. Friday, September 27 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Start the day in hastings-on-hudson with a guided tour of Ever Rest, the last home and studio of prominent Hudson River School painter and architect Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823 1900). On the National Register of Historic Places, the yellow Gothic Revival cottage contains numerous examples of Cropsey s paintings, prints, and drawings, including views of the surrounding countryside from Hudson River vistas to the small communities that border its banks. In yonkers we ll lunch at celebrity chef Peter Kelly s X2o Xavier s on the Hudson before a guided tour of the Hudson River Museum s six modern-art galleries and restored 19th-century Victorian mansion. Then a brief visit to Untermyer Gardens, where a restoration effort is bringing back to glory the former riverfront estate of New York lawyer Samuel Untermyer, who had one of the finest private gardens in the country in the early years of the 20th century. In tarrytown we ll check-in for a one-night stay at the Tarrytown House. Dinner will be at the prestigious Sleepy Hollow Country Club. Originally designed in 1893 as a palatial private residence, the main club house constitutes one of the last works of architect Stanford White (1853 1906). Saturday, September 28 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Both Franklin Delano and Eleanor Roosevelt, who grew up in the Hudson River Valley, maintained serene and simple private country retreats. In historic hyde park we ll visit Val- Kill Cottage, where Eleanor lived and worked when FDR was away and after his death. We ll pause for a three-course lunch of imaginative regional cuisine at the award-winning American Bounty Restaurant of the Culinary Institute of America. Then it s on to Springwood, the lifelong home of our only four-term President. Built by FDR s father, the modest farmhouse was expanded in an eclectic Dutch Colonial style. While not grand by the standard of the great river estates, the house entertained Winston Churchill, the king and queen of England, and other dignitaries. FDR and Eleanor are buried in the rose garden on the grounds. In rhinebeck we ll visit Wilderstein, a 19thcentury Queen Anne mansion once occupied by Daisy Suckley, FDR s distant cousin and close confidant who is featured in the recent, and largely fictional, film Hyde on Hudson. Our farewell evening begins with a privately-hosted cocktail reception before continuing to new paltz for a one-night stay at the spectacular Mohonk Mountain House and dinner in the resort s dining room amid turn-of-the-century ambience. Sunday, September 29 Breakfast & Lunch Our final day begins in poughkeepsie with a walk around the Vassar College campus led by our trip escort Jim Abbott, a graduate of the school. At Vassar s Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center a guided tour will showcase notable Hudson River School holdings and works by major European and American 20th-century painters. Continuing to annandale-on-hudson we ll tour Montgomery Place, originally built in the Federal style and later remodeled in the Classical Revival style by noted architect Alexander Jackson Davis (1803 1892). The 380- acre property, best known as a landscape influenced by the great Andrew Jackson Downing (1815 1852), is an amazingly intact example of Hudson Valley estate life. Enjoy a box lunch en route to hudson where you will have time at your leisure for antiques shopping on Warren Street, the city s main thoroughfare. Fly non-stop from albany to baltimore, arriving at 7:30pm.
