WELCOME TO OUR 2006/07 WORKSHOP PROGRAMME Our 2005/06 workshop programme was a great success a big thank you to everyone involved and those of you who attended workshops, we hope to see some familiar faces again this year. This year, the Partnership Services Team has worked closely with the new five sub regional Sport and Physical Activity Partnerships to produce a new extensive programme aimed at Coaches, Clubs and Volunteers across the 5 London Sub-regions. We are committed to providing developmental and educational opportunities, therefore certain people may be eligible for greatly reduced or free places on the courses detailed within. Please enquire when booking as to whether you qualify for a discount. Most workshops are certificated, either from Sports Coach UK, runningsports or ABC First Aid. Attendance on any of these workshops can offer many benefits, from helping Clubs gain National Governing Body awards to recognising the importance of Coaches and Volunteers by offering them opportunities for personal development. We are expecting these workshops to be very popular, please book quickly to avoid disappointment. The Partnership Services Team would like to extend its thanks to all partners involved in the planning and delivery of this workshop programme. WORKSHOP PRICES Workshops cost 15 and First Aid courses cost 25. Some discounts may be available to coaches, club members and volunteers through your National Governing Body. Please enquire when booking for information on eligibility. There is a limited number of scholarships for Step into Sport* Community Volunteers and Sports Club based Volunteers. The scholarships are available on a first come first served basis, so if you would like further information please contact Leanne Atkins on 0207 815 7844 PAYMENT : Please make cheques payable to London South Bank University. CANCELLATION POLICY If you need to cancel your place on any of the workshops, you must do so at least 7 days before the workshop date. Failure to cancel your place may result in your payment being non-refundable.

FIRST AID APPOINTED PERSONS (Sport and Exercise) This course runs for 6 contact hours and has been tailored towards sporting individuals. The session will include: - Aims and Principles of First Aid - Action at an Emergency - Basic Life Support - Management of the Unconscious Casualty - Assessment and treatment of a casualty who is wounded, bleeding or shocked - Assessment and treatment of fractures, dislocations, soft tissue injuries and burns This certificate is the minimum level of training recommended by the Health and Safety Executive for those acting in an emergency. It is accepted by all sports governing bodies and for most insurance purposes. The course includes use of film clips and scenario training and is run in an open, informal manner with delegates being encouraged to discuss their own concerns and experiences of sports injury and first aid. sportscoachuk: A GUIDE TO MENTORING SPORTS COACHES: Mentoring is a powerful tool in the education and development of sports coaches at all levels. This workshop will help you as a mentor to support coaches learning and focus on how learning occurs. sportscoachuk: ANALYSING YOUR COACHING: Discover methods of analysing your own coaching performance and identify areas for development. Learn how to develop and implement an action plan to enhance your coaching. sportscoachuk: COACHING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE: Discover the needs and motivation of young players. Learn how to deliver effective coaching sessions to meet the level of skill, development stage and motivation of each young player. sportscoachuk: COACHING DISABLED PERFORMERS: This workshop follows on from the sportscoachuk How to Coach Disabled People in Sport workshop. Develop your own coaching knowledge and skills to coach disabled players through inclusive and separate coaching sessions. Discover new ways to adapt equipment and identify appropriate safety and medical considerations to meet your players needs. sportscoachuk: COACHING METHODS AND COMMUNICATION: Unlock and develop your communication skills to build and maintain a positive and effective coach/player relationship. Learn the principles of good communication and coaching styles and how to use them to meet the needs of your performers.

sportscoachuk: EQUITY IN YOUR COACHING: Everyone should have access to sport, regardless of gender, age, race, ability, faith or sexual orientation. This workshop will help you to explain what equity means and why it is important, identify barriers to participation, use appropriate language and terminology and identify how you can become more equitable. sportscoachuk: GOOD PRACTICE AND CHILD PROTECTION: Discover how to protect yourself, the young people you are coaching and your employer. This workshop will help you to identify sporting situations and coaching practices that may constitute poor practice, recognise the signs and symptoms of child abuse, identify appropriate action and explain the roles and responsibilities of Police, social services etc. sportscoachuk: HOW TO COACH DISABLED PEOPLE IN SPORT: Tackles the frequently asked questions about working with disabled people in sport. At the end of the workshop coaches will be able to determine how to include disabled people in sport, select appropriate coaching activities and create effective coaching environments. sportscoachuk: IMPROVING PRACTICES AND SKILLS: Find out how skills are acquired, developed and retained so you can structure your practice in the most effective way. sportscoachuk: INTRODUCTION TO CORE STABILITY TRAINING: This interactive workshop raises awareness of the importance of core stability which is vital to optimising sports performance, playing longevity and reducing the risk of injury. The emphasis is on outlining how basic postural and core stability assessments can help raise awareness of potential problems relating to power generation from the hip and efficiency from each muscular effort. sportscoachuk: INTRODUCTION TO FUNDAMENTALS OF MOVEMENT: This practical workshop explores the concepts of Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and speed. This workshop assists coaches to observe, analyse and coach good movement patterns within their sessions whether multi skill or sport specific. sportscoachuk: INTRODUCTION TO LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT: This workshop will enable coaches to understand the key concepts of LTAD and what it means to them and their practice. Topics will include identifying and recognising the reasons for adopting LTAD and the appropriate action needed to integrate LTAD into their coaching. sportscoachuk: MOTIVATION AND MENTAL TOUGHNESS: Find out more about your performers and learn positive ways to help them commit to training and perform better in competition. runningsports: A CLUB FOR ALL: This workshop will help you find out how your club can benefit by welcoming all sectors of the community. You can assess how well you are doing at the moment and what else you could be doing to make your club more accessible to more people. runningsports: DEVELOPING PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN CLUBS AND SCHOOLS: This workshop aims to develop school and sport organisation partnerships to provide young people with quality opportunities to progress in sport from schools to clubs. Young people are the future of sport, and it is important that they are able to move from school to an adult environment which is of high quality, attractive to them, and that helps them progress in their chosen sport. runningsports: FUNDING FOR YOUR CLUB: Every sports club could use more money and better publicity. This workshop provides practical ideas for raising funds from a range of sources, including fund-raising events and sponsorship. runningsports HOW TO GET TAX BREAKS FOR YOUR CLUB: This workshop helps to explain the new tax breaks available through Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASC) status. You can learn how to go about paying considerably less tax in order to allow you to spend more where it counts on your club. runningsports: VALUING YOUR SPORTS VOLUNTEERS: This workshop will help you to recruit more volunteers, motivate, retain, reward and manage them even more effectively. LSBU HUMAN PERFORMANCE CENTRE WORKSHOP: SPORTS NUTRITION: Understanding nutritional needs during training underpins effective athletic development. This workshop explores the fundamentals of the effective use of fats, protein and carbohydrates, and details strategies for ensuring peak nutritional support throughout the year. Analysing your athlete s diet and calculating energy, fluid and supplement need will be covered from the Coach's perspective. LSBU HUMAN PERFORMANCE CENTRE WORKSHOP: STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING: This workshop will include discussions around the following topics: - Planning the strength and conditioning programme for maximum benefits throughout the year. - Weight training. Principles of weight gain, strength, power, speed. - Aerobic conditioning for repeat sprint endurance based sports. - Fitness testing for power, acceleration, speed endurance, strength etc. - Optimal muscle recovery. Academy of Sport, Physical Activity and Wellbeing Services The LSBU Academy of Sport, Physical Activity & Wellbeing has dedicated support services for junior and grass roots clubs, their coaches, and young athletes / players. As the Partnership Services Team is an integral part of the Academy, clubs, coaches and young athletes / players can benefit from hugely discounted access to the advance sports science and development programmes the Academy offer. The support services available are; Human Performance Centre (HPC) The tailor-made Sports Performance Programme (SPP) is designed to assess, advise and monitor players of all ages and abilities who are seeking to improve their physical performance. In doing so the HPC team works closely with the Coach and or player to determine player, and position specific needs upon which an individual s SPP is developed. The range of services include: Physiology; Strength & Conditioning; Sports Nutrition; Biomechanics; Sports Psychology. The courses help coaches to take the evidence-based approach i.e. applying sports science principles to their current coaching practice and empowering coaches to evaluate new methods that emerge, which may make a significant difference to athletic performance. There are two study options: half day courses and/or units of study taking place over a 5-week period (every Wednesday for 5 weeks). Units of study can be accrued towards Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or MSc.
