Immerse yourself in the rich culture of Peru s capital, and delve into the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest on our Peru: Lima and the Amazon expedition. This expedition starts in Lima, the capital of Peru and the heart of its culinary and artist culture. After checking in to your hotel located atop beautiful cliffs on the Pacific Coast, meet your group and tour the surrounding neighborhoods, such as Barranco, and learn about their distinct architectural and cultural attributes. This evening, visit Casa Garcia Alvarado, a family mansion declared a National Historic Building in 2005. Take a tour of the historic house before enjoying a home-made meal served by the house staff and accompanied by one of the family members. The following day, continue your discovery of Lima. Visit the US Embassy, as well as a local NGO, and engage in some political briefings with diplomats and local experts. Then, savor a delicious lunch at El Mercado restaurant, which experiments with new formats of Peruvian seafood cuisine. Visit the Larco Herrera Museum, housed in an 18th century colonial mansion with the most extensive collection of pre-columbian art in Peru. On your way back to the hotel, stop at the Quierolo Tavern and indulge in some local snacks as well as one of the best Pisco Sours in the city. Next, embark on a 4-night luxury Amazon cruise aboard the Aqua Amazon, which caters to the most discerning and adventurous of world travelers and provides an unforgettable journey into areas visited by only a privileged few. Enjoy the delicious cuisine of Lima s star chef, Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, who oversees the Aqua Amazon menus, focusing on fresh, delicious Peruvian fare, paired with fine South American wines. As the ship ties up along the banks of the river, explore the black-water lakes of the flooded forest of Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve with experienced naturalists. Spanning more than five million acres and located at the headwaters of the Amazon Basin, this natural sanctuary is one of the largest protected areas in Peru with a rich eco diversity. Go fishing for piranhas and other tropical fish. Venture into the rain forest on foot and interact with local people living in villages along the riverbanks. Very well informed, fun and provided great access to State Department staff. ~ Lynn Minna-South America, 2014 Heather is a gem. Her Foreign Service experiences are a wonderful resource and she was a terrific host. ~ Ben Alvord-South America, 2014 LIMA & THE AMAZON ambassador HEATHER HODGES became the President and Ambassador-in-Residence of the Cleveland Council on World Affairs in November 2011 after 31 years in the Foreign Service, spent mostly working on issues related to Latin America. She was deputy chief of mission in Lima, Peru, from 1997-2000. Earlier in her career she was in charge of the Peru Desk at the Department of State and was Deputy Coordinator for Cuban Affairs. She was deputy chief of mission in Managua and Madrid and did consular work in Venezuela and Guatemala. Heather was Ambassador to Moldova from 2003 to 2006 and Ambassador to Ecuador from 2008 to 2011. She was elected to the American Academy of Diplomacy in 2011. Heather has led two trips for the Council in Central and South America, and will share her diplomatic experiences and knowledge of Peruvian politics. APRIL 16-24, 2016 itinerary Saturday-Sunday, April 16-17 DEPART US / ARRIVE LIMA, PERU Depart home and fly to Peru. Arrive Lima International Airport. Transfer to your hotel, located in the Miraflores district on cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. In the afternoon, meet your group and depart for a panoramic tour of the Miraflores, San Isidro, and Barranco neighborhoods. Explore these districts, which evoke their own unique style and persona, then make your way to the Gold Museum of Peru. This museum hosts the largest collection of gold in the country and is your first insight into the country s rich history. After the tour, enjoy a private welcome dinner at Casa Garcia Alvarado, a family home declared a National Historic Building in 2015. Begin with a Pisco Sour in the drawing room, followed by a tour of the historic house. Join one of the family members for a home-made Peruvian meal and toast to your upcoming journey. Overnight: JW Marriott Miraflores (D) Monday, April 18 LIMA Before embarking on our guided exploration of Lima, visit the U.S. Embassy for a briefing and later meet with a Peruvian expert on contemporary issues. Visit some of Lima s most impressive sites such as the Plaza de Armas and San Francisco Monastery, providing a perspective on religious life during Spanish colonial times. Enjoy a delicious seafood lunch at El Mercado restaurant, which combines innovation and experimentation with the country s culinary roots. Here, Chef Rafael Osterling produces exquisite dishes such as tiradito bathed in Japanese citrus or suckling goat stewed in Madeira wine. Visit the Larco Herrera Museum, housed in an 18th century colonial mansion. The museum holds the most extensive collection of pre-columbian art in Peru, featuring many fine examples of textile work. Walk to Quierolo Tavern, a traditional restaurant and bar exemplifying the laid-back ambiance of late nineteenth century Lima. Sample one of the best Pisco Sours in the city and transfer back to the hotel for dinner on your own. Or, continue your taste of the local beverage with an optional Pisco tasting, where you will sample the tavern s very own variations on this grape-distilled brandy produced just outside of Lima. Overnight: JW Marriott Miraflores (B, L) Tuesday, April 19 LIMA / IQUITOS / AMAZON CRUISE Spend the morning at leisure. Transfer to the airport with your group before flying to the city of Iquitos, the gateway to the Amazon. Enjoy a scenic one-and-a-half hour drive through the Peruvian countryside to the small village of Nauta. Board the Aqua Amazon for a welcome briefing and introduction. Toast your journey with sommelier-selected fine South American wines, the perfect accompaniment to the Amazonia-influenced cuisine of Executive Chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, whose restaurant, Malabar, ranks among Lima s best. Overnight: Aqua Amazon (B, D) Wednesday, April 20 AMAZON CRUISE Within the vast Amazon flooded forest, cruise along an amazing black water stream, and learn about the rain forest from your naturalist guides. Explore what scientists call a gallery forest, because of its narrow vegetation that creates a tunnel of leaves. As you float through this tunnel, the naturalist guides help you to spot parrots, macaws, and fluffy monk saki monkeys in the trees along the riverbanks. In the afternoon, embark on a journey through the Mirrored Forest to see towering trees reflected in the black water river while on the lookout for enchanting parrots, blue-yellow macaws, as well as the great variety of primates and sloths unperturbed by your presence. Overnight: Aqua Amazon (B, L, D) Thursday, April 21 AMAZON CRUISE This morning, undertake a full-day excursion along the Pacaya River, exploring the flooded forest of this vast region of the Peruvian Amazon. You will sail among a wide variety of wildlife, birds including large parrots, macaws, herons, and storks and many species of primates like the capuchin, howler, and squirrel monkeys. Take the opportunity to visit some of the most beautiful lakes and meet some of the friendly local people who tend to the reserve s natural resources. Or, explore the Pacaya and Puhinahua Rivers in search of the Amazon s pink dolphin and other unique wildlife that inhabit the region. Overnight: Aqua Amazon (B, L, D) Friday, April 22 AMAZON CRUISE After breakfast, we sail on to Lake Clavero where villagers paddle in their traditional dugout canoes. You may wish to swim in the lake s calm waters and visit the community to interact with the Amazonian neighbors who will be pleased to welcome you. Cruise along the great Amazon River, observing the flora and fauna, then stop at a riverside community that actively conserves the forest s natural resources and their own ancestral customs. This evening, raise your glass to the captain, crew, and new friends, at a farewell dinner in celebration of your journey. Overnight: Aqua Amazon (B, L, D) Saturday-Sunday, April 23-24 IQUITOS / LIMA / ALOFT / ARRIVE HOME Arrive at the riverside community of Belen. Here, discover houses and shops that actually float on the river when water levels are high. Explore the bustling food markets, offering a variety of goods and produce sourced locally from the Peruvian Amazon and sold by the surrounding communities. En route to Iquitos airport, stop at the Manatee Rescue Center, where biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees that conservation authorities have rescued. Fly back to Lima and connect with your international flight home, arriving the following day. (B, L) 1-800-942-5004, ext. 209 or 217 travel@wacphila.org
