According to Police Chief Godfrey, It was our way to reach out and create an approachable relationship with all the negative events happening in the world today. In addition to a free barbecue lunch with chips and drinks, there was a bounce house and basketball games for the children to enjoy. The PAL kids and YDC members were on hand to help with the event. This community event was very well attended by over 100 hundred residents who enjoyed spending time together. Plans are underway to hold a future Unity in the Community event in Ormond Beach. PAGE 3 Protecting Sea Turtles & Their Habitat On Friday, March 16, Becki O Keefe, Field Manager for the Volusia County Sea Turtle Conservation Program, presented a very interesting program to 24 participants at the Environmental Discovery Center. Becki discussed the biology of sea turtles with particular attention to the Loggerhead, Leatherback and Green turtle species, which are most common in Volusia County. We learned those species all nest and lay their eggs on the beach at night. Sea turtles can lay up to 100 eggs at a time, but female turtles do not always have eggs each year. Hatchlings (baby turtles) instinctively go directly to the ocean when born and must swim nonstop for 72 hours until they reach a unique area in the Atlantic Ocean called the Sargasso Sea where they continue to grow and develop. Participants learned the major risks to sea turtles and their habitat include vehicles on the beach, beach and ocean trash, lights at beachfront homes and businesses, and encounters with fishing boats. Becki explained that in order to protect turtles, vehicles are prohibited in designated beach conservation areas. Beach driving hours are restricted in non-conservation areas during nesting season which runs May 1 through October 31. Finally, Becki advised attendees on the things everyone can do to protect sea turtles including filling in holes dug in the sand and flattening sand castles when leaving the beach. Thank you Becki for a great program!
