RESOURCES Addressing the power needs of the country has started putting immense pressure on the coal demands. GVK started its exploration in the global arena to address these demands. GVK has acquired 79% stake in Alpha Coal project and Alpha West Coal project and 100% stake in Kevin s Corner project in Queensland from Hancock Pty. Ltd. These projects hold estimated reserves of about 8 billion tonne and a capacity of about 85 million tonne per annum. When combined, these projects will create one of the largest thermal coal mining operations in the world. GVK has also acquired 100% stake in the 500 km rail line and a 60 million tonne per annum port as part of the pit-to-port logistics solution. This project envisages an investment of USD 10 billion. This acquisition was awarded the Asia Deal of the Year and Asia Outbound Investor of the Year at the 8th Asia Mining Congress 2012, Singapore. GVK has received all relevant approvals pertaining to mine, rail and port project from both State and Federal Govt. GVK Hancock and Aurizon (Aus infrastructure major) have entered into a strategic partnership to further the development of rail and port infrastructure that will help in the opening up of Galilee Basin reserves. GVK Hancock has appointed Thiess as preferred mine operations contractor for developing the Alpha Coal project in Galilee Basin.
RESOURCES Coal Australia - Alpha Coal and Alpha West Coal Projects The Alpha Coal Project, declared as a Project of State Significance by the Queensland Government, enjoys favourable geology. Its four principal layers dip from east to west and vary in thickness ranging from 3 to 8 m. This makes the mine suitable for high-production open-cut mining. In addition, the Alpha West Coal project is currently under exploration and can contain further accessible resources. These coal mines will deliver a very high quality thermal coal with a Gross Calorific Value of about 5800-6000 kcal/kg and low ash and low sulphur content. Kevin s Corner Coal Project is an advanced coal project and is proposed to be developed as an open cut and underground operation producing up to 30 million tonne per annum. The development process for Kevin s Corner will derive significant benefit from the prior development of the immediately adjacent Alpha coal project. India - Tokisud & Seregarah The coal mining operations at Tokisud North Sub Block and Seregarah Block are a strategic backward integration move supporting the Goindwal Sahib Coal Fired Power Project. The Tokisud open cast mining block, located 50 km north-west of Ranchi city in the state of Jharkhand, is being developed into a captive coal mine. Tokisud North Sub Block and the Seregarah Block have huge mineable reserves. These coal mines together will cater to the fuel requirements of GVK s upcoming Goindwal Sahib Thermal Power Project in North India.
RESOURCES Oil and Gas GVK has partnered with BHP Billiton, one of the world s largest diversified resources companies, for exploring seven deep-water oil and gas blocks (awarded under NELP VII)located in the frontier deep water basins off the west coast of India spread across 36000 sq. km of area. State-of-the-Art over/under 2D seismic data has been acquired and processed over the entire block areas to image subbasalt layers. Identifying Oil & Gas as a high potential growth segment, GVK is currently interpreting the latest seismic data to move further in the direction of finding new hydrocarbon resources in hitherto completely unexplored geological play to ensure growth and progress in this segment. The major exploration work has been planned over the next two years, which includes mapping of lead/prospects, to gather new 3D seismic API in priority areas and to drill a few exploratory wells.
