PRESIDENT S MESSAGE LARRY PEARSON, President T.T.O.S. Southwestern Division (SWD), and its Members and Officers, or the editor and publisher of The Southwestern Limited. Call me at the above phone number in the mornings after 8:00am if you need to get in touch with me. Call, I love to talk. CAL-STEWART 2017 NOVEMBER 17(SETUP), 18, 19, 2017 Your Executive Board voted unanimously at our February 15 th Board Meeting to move our Fall Cal- Stewart Meet to the Glendale Civic Auditorium (GCA). We were able to get our usual weekend dates, the weekend before Thanksgiving, November 17 (Setup), 18, and 19. We will be using the upper and lower levels, giving us a total of 25,000 square feet of usable space. Load-in for Friday s setup works very well for both levels. Parking is free during Friday s Setup and is only $6 all day in their nearby parking structure (no in-and-out privileges), which is half what we have been paying in recent years. Or you can find free parking on nearby residential streets or metered parking for 75 cents an hour in a public parking lot south of Mountain Street. Attendees can bring in their own food and drink without restriction. We can rent their kitchen and bring someone in to prepare food or we can arrange for a food truck. We haven t decided what to do on this yet. The cost of the facility is within our budget. The pricing structure for the facility is by the hour, which is unusual. There are no Hotels in the immediate vicinity, but there are plenty of hotels south of the 134 in Glendale and Eagle Rock. We do not plan to have a Host Hotel this year. We will provide a list of nearby hotels in the registration brochure. There are several nice restaurants in Montrose, which is north of the GCA. We used to use the lower level for our monthly meets for a period when Gary Keck was President of our Division. The Glendale Toy Show uses the upper level for their January and August shows. Why did we make this change? Fairplex was affordable and was plenty big enough for our needs. 2 But we received many, many complaints about their parking setup for attendees. They have absolutely no consideration for the needs of disabled attendees, and we have a lot of them. Everyone parks in a large lot (lot 17) at least one-quarter mile away and has to take a shuttle to the hall. Fairplex management offers no remedy for their disregard for the needs of disabled attendees. Due to the quantity of complaints, we decided not to try this again. But where to go? We met with and toured six possibilities: Arcadia Masonic Center, Universal City (both the Hilton and the Sheraton), Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel, Pasadena Convention Center, and the Glendale Civic Auditorium. The Arcadia Masonic Center, where we hold our monthly Meets, is about 10,000 sq. ft in three isolated rooms. This configuration does not work for us and it is too small. Universal City is extremely expensive in every respect, and therefore would never work for us. The Burbank Marriott is too small and much too expensive for our needs. Pasadena is unchanged from why we left it in the first place, namely, too small or too expensive and we would have to move our Cal-Stewart Meet to December. Last, we toured the Glendale Civic Auditorium. They had our dates, the size we needed, and the cost was affordable. So we paid the deposit and signed a contract on Friday, February 17 th. It is very easy to get to off the 134 Freeway. Put the dates on your calendar and plan to attend. CAL-STEWART 2016 REPORT As reported previously, we were unable to secure an acceptable contract with the Ontario Convention Center for our 2016 Cal-Stewart Meet. The people who wanted us there and arranged for a great deal for the hall and all the other costs and the Friday night welcome dinner had moved on and the new people there were offering no deals. And then they booked our hall to another group on our dates. We contacted FAIRPLEX and found that all the halls were available on our dates. We booked Building 6, a 33,600 square foot building, in January, 2016. We were planning on a 300 table meet, and this hall size would leave little room for layouts. Hollis Cotton and Mike Stella were co-chairman. Hollis worked on the hall layout and Mike made the hotel and restaurant arrangements. As November approached, table sales and pre-registrations fell far short of expectations, for reasons we still don t understand.

Was it FAIRPLEX? Was it the economy? We ended up with about 210 table sales and added layouts to fill the empty space. Overall, we lost about $1700 on the Meet. Fortunately, many large sellers reported great table sales. We had an unusually large number of walk-in registrations on Saturday. Here is a list of our workers to thank for Cal-Stewart 2016: Co-Chairmen: Hollis Cotton and Mike Stella Pre-Registration and On-Site Registration: Bruce and Elaine Lazarus, plus many volunteers. A couple of our youngsters, namely Peter Ronney and Jake Dierking, are bringing HO and O-gauge track and are setting up an operating layout on four tables just across from my repair table. Both Peter and Jake buy fixer-uppers at our meets and use my tools and parts to fix them. Such activities are very welcome at our Monthly Meets. I encourage our sellers to offer them good deals on trains you are selling. They are our future! IF YOU HAVE NOT RENEWED, PLEASE DO SO We normally are well over 400 Members by this time of the year, but are not for 2017. If you have not renewed, please do so. At $30 per year, it is very much a good deal. Our Membership Secretary, Arlene Berns, will be sending you a reminder notice any day now. Please support Southwestern by continuing your Membership, recruiting new Members, buying our souvenir cars, and attending our monthly Meets and Cal-Stewart. As always, hugs to all, and run your trains often.
