Phone prefix = (593 2) Eliminado: L Eliminado: Information about Cuenca, Venue of the Forum General Information Cuenca is located between 2,350 and 2,550 metres above sea level, in the southern region of the Ecuadorian Andes, and was long ago known as Guapdondélic of the Cañari. Its name changed with time to Tomebamba, second capital of the Inca Empire, and was conquered in 1533 by the Spaniards. During the siege on the 12 th of April, 1557, a town was founded with the name of Cuenca. This would later become the home town of Peru s Viceroy, Mr. Andrés Hurtado de Mendoza, who commissioned its foundation to Gil Ramírez Dávalos. Cuenca, a city of the southern Andean region of Ecuador and capital of the province of Azuay, was declared by UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. In addition, in April 2007 and as a celebration of the 450 anniversary of its foundation by the Spaniards, Cuenca was the venue chosen for the creation of the Ibero American Network of World Heritage, Healthy and University Cities with the support of PAHO/WHO. The development of Cuenca and its region has been historically linked to the mobility of its population, both domestically and internationally. Since the seventies, the United States and Canada had been the main destination of the migratory flows. However, starting at the nineties, the destinations diversified and migration to Europe increased, especially to Spain. Today, Cuenca also receives South American migratory flows, mainly from Peru and, to a less extent, Colombia. The climate is mild. Between June and September, Cuenca suffers a drought period, while the rest of the year there are rainy periods of variable intensity, mainly between October December and March May. With a population of approximately 450,000 inhabitants, Cuenca is the third largest and most important city in Ecuador, as well as the most attractive and tranquil of the country. Its historical centre has a colonial flair but is actually republican, due to the fact that most of its beautiful buildings were constructed during the 19 th century. buildings from the 18 th century, mainly the two cloisters, El Carmen and La Inmaculada Concepción, part of the old cathedral, and a few houses. What is especially attractive about the city centre is the homogeneous look of the compound, modified only by some touches of striking modernism in buildings of the 50 s and 60 s of the 20 th century. One of the most outstanding features of the Historical Centre, are the many traditional houses with eaves and facades ornamented with plastering in the shape of garlands and semi columns, borders and medallions, balconies made of wood and forged steel, doors and windows that reveal interesting woodworks and interior spaces with patios, gardens and halls with painted roofs and polychrome metal imported from the United States or Europe by the rich bourgeois families from the beginning of the 20 th century. It is also worth mentioning the churches: San Francisco, El Carmen, both cathedrals, San Alfonso, Santo Domingo and others, which host an essential part of the architectural, sculptural and pictorial heritage; the museums, such as La Concepción known as Las Conceptas and the biggest centre of religious art in the southern area of the country, Remigio Crespo, which hosts a series of pieces related to the city and its history, and the Arte Moderno museum, where the important Bienal Internacional de Cuenca is held. We cannot forget the little squares, such as Flores, and the parks, San Sebastián, Calderón, San Blas, which invite a break in the daily routine.
