Tillman and Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I CD April, 2017 Hi All It has finally reached that time of year. Today was the last meeting that we do not have a planned ride after the meeting. We have our Friends Night out all year. The FNO is not a GWRRA function, just a opportunity for us to get together and have fun. We now will have rides and probably even more important for our members will have our Ice Cream Social starting in April. I think that all of our members know that you cannot be a full member unless ice cream is one of the most important things in our lives. At our meeting today Dave Smith, our ride coordinator, very quickly went over some of the rides that we will have this year. Believe me we will have one of the best planned riding seasons that Chapter I has ever had. I think that our 2nd Saturday and weekend rides are planned for the year. I believe this is the first times we have done this before our riding season has started. Our after meeting rides do not take the time consuming planning that our 2nd Saturday and weekend rides do. Please, all of you start thinking of weekend and 2nd Saturday rides that you would like for our chapter to do next year and we will start planning for a great riding year for all of us to enjoy. Next month I believe that all of our Snow Birds will be back with us. Today Bruce and Brenda were back from Florida and hopefully the rest of you will be back real soon. We have missed all of you and Chapter I is not the same without you. We were lucky to have had great attendance at our meetings, but it would have been even better if all of you (our part time Florida friends) would have been with us. Thanks to all of our staff and chapter members who help make Chapter I the special chapter that it has become. Hopefully, we will have an even better year this year than last year. Ride Safe, Janet and Tillman 2

C h a p t e r E d u c a t o r Janet Hill April, 2017 Well it s that time again. Each month that passes by it becomes harder and harder to write an article about motorcycle safety. So this month I decided to write about getting ready for the upcoming riding season. Did you get your bike/trike by the dealership to have it checked? If not and you decide to do it now don t be surprised if you are umteenth (is that really a word in line. We all procrastinate some time but this probably was not really a good time to do so. However, there are some task we the semi-skilled and unskilled can do by ourselves. You need to start at the front of the motorcycle, with the front tire. If you have a two wheeler put it on the center stand and if you have a trike move it around to check the tread. Are there any foreign objects protruding and deep cracks in the rubber? Check the valve stem, wiggle it around you can even put water on it to make sure it is not leaking. Now check the brake pads for thickness. Is there anything broke or missing in the fan area? Next check the lights. Is the high and low beam working properly. How is he windshield, is it scratched so much it is difficult to see out of? Now start by removing the side covers, check for leaks, any hanging wires or anything lodge in there that you may have picked up along the road. Check the radiator, when was the last time the coolant was changed. Check your spark plug wires. Don t forget to check the brake reservoir. Make sure it is full and if it is a dirty color it needs to be changed. Now check the rear lights, brake, running and tail lights. Make sure they are in working order. Pay special attention to the battery after all it has sat in the garage all winter. Check the wires and the fluids. Go back up to the top and check the brake and throttle cables for proper tension. You know it is recommended to change the brake fluid every two years. Is the CB working? Make a list of the items that may need to be worked on and if you can do your own repairs or if you have to take it to a dealership you will have some idea of what needs to be done. By doing this it may save you some time at the dealership or on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck. We know stuff can happen but by checking your bike/trike before you go on that first ride of the season it may save you time later. Of course there are items I have not mentioned that need to be check but at least this will give you a head start and you can hopefully be ready to ride when the season begins. Remember safety is very important to GWRRA riders. Keep your bike in good shape and always ride safe. Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I Educator 3

Membership Enhancement Coordinator Charles Weinhagen April, 2017 Finally!!! Finally!!! Finally 3 weeks after the doctor released me I got on the Wing and rode. It had been almost 4 months and I had to complete a check list so I could remember all the buttons, switches, bells and whistles. One thing I did while in dry dock period that I have wanted to do for years was to install new horns. Now instead of sounding like Herbie the Love Bug it sounds more like a 1963 Cadillac (land yacht) and gets drivers attention and yes I had to use them several times. Boy was it good to ride again. March s Friends Night Out at TGI Friday was met with SNOW and 16 out of 31 friends who signed up bravely ventured out. Roads in Asheville, Canton and Hendersonville were no problem but reports from higher up were not good so I am glad those of you up there didn t try it. We had another new to our chapter member come and join us, Reid Davis came up from Old Fort and he along with the rest of us had a good meal and a good time. Hopefully we will see Reid at a monthly meeting and join us for upcoming rides. April is time for Monthly Sunday afternoon Ice Cream rides (not an official scheduled chapter ride) but if the weather is nice I would hope you would get on the bike and ride. Sunday afternoon April 23rd will be our first ice cream outing and we will meet at 2:30pm at the Ultimate Ice Cream Company at 1070 Tunnel Road, Asheville NC 28805. I haven t been there but it has good reviews and they make all their own ice cream and goodies. I wish all of you a wonderful Easter and I ll join you on the road. Ride & Planning Coordinators Dave & Diane Smith April, 2017 Hi All, The sun is shining and it is 76 degrees outside. Our monthly gathering is coming up this Saturday and it will be the last time we get together before the first ride of the season. I hope that you are as excited about it as I am. Winter is finally over. Pull your cover off the bike and join us for the second Saturday ride on April 8. First ride of the year. NC-I will be travelling to Tenn. for lunch at the famous Farmer s Daughter. We will be leaving from the Burger King in Weaverville at 10am. I will be the ride captain for this event. Be sure and show up ready for some good food. Farmer s Daughter is a family style restaurant that serves up some good ole American southern cooking. I am confident that when you leave your palette will be satisfied. Our next gathering will be Friends Nite Out. See Charles article. NC-I monthly meeting for April will be on the 22nd. Robin will be the ride captain for the NC-I after meeting ride. We will be taking some fun back roads to Marion where we will be chowing down on barbeque. April 28 May 1 Annual guys ride. We will be leaving to go to Beaufort, SC to watch the Blue Angels perform. From there we will be traveling to Myrtle Beach to work on our tans before heading home. If you need to make arrangements contact Jerry Pitts for motel and ticket information. Ride leaders are Jerry, Al and myself. We will be leaving at 9:00 am from exit 44 (Hendersonville) at the Burger King on Fri., April 28. Future dates to put on your calendar. May 13 is going to be our annual work day at Stan and Nancy s home. This is an excellent opportunity to get service work or repairs done on your Wing before the riding season hits full stride. This is open to all NC-I members including the co-riders as there will be lots of fellowship and of course food. We will be leaving from McDonalds in Canton at 10:00. The ride captain for this event is Tillman. 8

May 29 June 1 Chapter I overnighter to Ohio. This trip is planned and we are ready to go. I can state that we are confirmed to visit the AMA headquarters and museum in Columbus. We are also visiting the largest ice cream store in the state of Ohio. A treat that you will not want to miss. Other fun things are in the works and of course lots of great riding. A trip not to be missed. June 23 27 Hendersonville GWRRA Chapter M2 has planned an overnight trip to Kentucky. They are going to Renfro Valley to see the Oak Ridge Boys in concert. The cost of the show tickets is $40 per person. If you are planning on staying overnight the lodging is $74.19 per night. M2 has invited NC-I to join them for this event. If you are interested in going contact Gerry & Rusti Boykin at rbgwings@yahoo.com. The deadline for this event is April 10. This is just a small sampling of the fun stuff that NC-I is going to be doing this year. So stay tuned for more rides as we all prepare to.. The Men s ride I hope that all the guys have been getting Jerry's e-mails about the guys ride and are getting your reservations in. This is going to be an outstanding ride and a lot of fun. Jerry has put together a great ride for us. We will be leaving on Fri. (April 28) and riding most of the day to get to our destination. On Sat (April 29) we will be attending the air show put on by the Blue Angels. I have never seen this show so I am really excited to go. On Sun (April 30 ) Jerry will be leading the group back home. That will make this ride a three day event. For those who would like to do a four day event, Al and myself will be leaving on Sun (April 30) and riding to Mrytle Beach goofing off there and heading home on Mon (May 1). This will make the event a 4 day ride. So you have a choice on Sun (April 30) to either ride home with Jerry or go on to Myrtle Beach with me. This makes the guys ride either a 3 day or 4 day event depending on what you chose to do. There is nothing required of you in making your selection. Just let Jerry and myself know on Sunday morning (April 30) who you are riding with. If you are going on to Mrytle Beach we are not making any reservations in advance. We will be winging it as we go. If you are going on the guys ride you will still need to make motel reservations for Fri (April 28 and Sat April 29). See Jerry earlier e-mail for details. Additionally, I don't know if Jerry still has any box seats left but if you desire to sit in the box seats you need to contact Jerry ASAP. I hope that this e-mail clears up the 3 day and 4 day options for the trip. We had a great turnout last year and everyone had a great time. I am sure the same will be said about the ride this year. Questions call me at 828/273-5398. Dave Smith GWRRA NC-I Ride Coordinator Hi Everyone The addition to the men's ride that Dave and Al came up with sounds great. I haven't been to Myrtle Beach in a long time. We will be adding a day to the ride to enjoy Myrtle Beach. If you are unable to add this extra day to your trip, it is easy to find your way home either back roads or I-95 to I-26. I hope all will be able to go to Myrtle Beach! So far the who have asked for Box are: Dave Smith, David Newman, Al Warren, Charlie Childers, Rob Durling, Dave Cole, Jerry Pitts, Johnny Johnson, Mick Richard, and Gordon Booth. I will order the tickets on Jan 2nd, they are $17.50, let me know if you want to join us. This trip gets better all the time. Jerry 11

Chapter Overnight Ride to Ohio May 29 June 1, 2017 Are you tried of the winter blues? Ready to go somewhere on the Wing? Want to ride some new roads that you have not been on before? Not a problem. Your NC-I family has got you covered. The ride starts by meeting your NC-I family at the Burger King in Weaverville. The group pulls out at 9:30 and rolls up I26. The skies are blue and as the group crosses over the Tennessee state line and the sun begins warming up the riders. The group passes through Johnson City and prepares to take a break just before crossing over into VA. After fueling up it s just a brisk ride through the rolling hills covered in green grass and flowers, following the ribbon of asphalt before stopping to fuel up. There is a lot of laughter and joking around at lunch and it takes a while to get everyone back on their bikes. The scenery changes as we roll through KY. This is coal country and we see lots of dump trucks. We pass schools and small towns with white churches that have steeples on top. There are kid s bicycles in the yard along with above ground swimming pools. Traffic is light and the towns are spread out about every 30 miles or so. At the northern end of the state is the mighty Ohio River. Crossing over the river on a 3 lane bridge and looking down on the barges below reminds one of a time long ago past. The Welcome to Ohio sign awaits you on the other side. You know it will be only 50 miles to the motel. Then dinner and then a good night of sleep at the Wheelersburg Comfort Inn. Day two starts out with a short ride to the flood wall. This is a huge wall that is; I would guess a quarter of a mile long. Artists have painted pictures on each section of the wall depicting life in Portsmouth from its early beginnings right up through modern day life. There is even a panel dedicated to motorcycles. A great place to take lots of pictures. We will be headed north from the wall in the direction of Columbus, state capitol of Ohio. The lush rolling hills will change to flat land and fields of wheat and corn will appear. Arriving in Columbus in time for lunch will be a break from the traffic. Traffic will get quite busy as we approach the city. Following lunch a very short ride and the kickstands will be lower in the parking lot of the AMA. The American Motorcycle Association is dedicated to fighting for the rights of all motorcyclists. We will be at their National Headquarters and Paula will meet us there to answer any and all questions that you have about motorcycle legal rights. Their museum has over 100 motorcycles and over 1000 toys in addition to a movie. After spending some time there, we will all line up to take a picture which we will submit to Wing World and with any luck may see it in the magazine one day. From the AMA we will head west riding scenic back roads that meander through the farm lands of western Ohio. We will arrive at the Comfort Suites in Springfield, Ohio in time to rest up for a special evening. For dinner we will travel the 8 miles to Young s Dairy Farm. This is the largest ice shop in the State of Ohio. With hundreds of flavors to tickle your taste buds this is one, must go to stop. They also serve food so this will be a taster s delight of food and dessert. A good night s rest will be needed after this 12

stop. Day 3 is going to be a riding day. We will travel south and east riding the two lane roads that pass through small towns and villages. With the sun poking through the big white puffy clouds the telephone poles will click by as we pass from the flat farm lands to the rolling hills of southern Ohio. After putting some miles on the odometer the group will ride over the narrow bridge that crosses the river between Ohio and KY. Route 8 follows the river west as it twists and turns toward Newport. After arriving in Erlanger, KY, the group will check into the Wingate. There you will have three options. One, you can visit the Aquarium or two you can visit German Village or three you can take a nap. The choice is entirely up to you. That evening you and your NC-I family will all go out for a nice dinner at a nice place. Day 4 will be headed home taking the back roads as much as possible. Pulling into the driveway you will have a huge smile on your face and the knowledge that you made the ride not to be missed and that will be talked about for years.
