Experience Level This is recommended for someone who is an advanced beginner sewer. You will be sewing mostly straight lines, but will be sewing through many layers of fabric and working with very precise measurements. Equipment Needed Sewing Machine Hand sewing needle Ruler Materials Needed Main Fabric 1/3 Yard or fat quarter Interior Fabric 1/2 Yard Lining Fabric 3/4 Yard Coordinating thread Low loft batting (large scrap) Interfacing (heavyweight fusible) 1/2 Elastic 1/8 Elastic Large button Old Binder Optional Equipment Walking foot Serger Rotary cutting tool and self-healing mat Notes on fabric: For my tablet cases I have used the home décor fabric from Joann. Regular quilting cotton would work just fine for this, I just like the heavier-weight feel for the outside and the pockets. For the lining I used simple cotton broadcloth. I think the outside of the case would be cute with a fine-waled corduroy too. Whatever you choose, I recommend something that will wash easily as that is the point of having a case with removable boards. ***Pre-wash all your fabrics believe me, you don t want to risk your nicely fitting case shrinking up on you! If you use home dec fabric or another shreddy fabric, simply serge or zig zag the edges before you throw it in the wash. Please do not distribute this pattern without my permission. Page 1 of 9
Section 1 Prep Gather your fabrics and supplies. Find your device s dimensions on the attached Measurement Chart. Cut up the old binder to create your three board pieces. (I used kitchen shears, but a box cutter would work as well.) Cut out all your rectangles as per the Measurement Chart. Please do not distribute this pattern without my permission. Page 2 of 9
Section 2 Board Lining Take each pair of board lining fabric rectangles and sew them right sides together along three sides with a 3/8 seam allowance leaving one short side open. Test the fit of the lining on the board. You want the lining to fit very snugly around the board. Make adjustments as necessary.) Trim excess fabric, clip corners and turn right sides out. Press. Press open edge under ¼. Slide corresponding binder board into each liner. Using a hand sewing needle whipstitch the open end closed. Board linings are now complete. Section 3 Case Interior Place the long edge of the large interior fabric piece right sides facing with one of the lining pieces. Stitch with a ¼ seam and press seam toward lining. Fold this long piece in half wrong sides facing with the fold running parallel to your seam. Match up ends. Your interior fabric should fold over about an inch or so to the other side. Press. Sandwich your piece of batting in between your folded fabric. Make sure the top of the batting is right up against the fold and it is centered with ½ on each side and bottom. Using safety pins, pin all three layers together in a few places in the center. This piece will make your pocket for the boards. Place the long edge of the 2 interior fabric piece right sides facing with the other lining piece. Stitch with a ¼ seam and press toward lining. Please do not distribute this pattern without my permission. Page 4 of 9
Place your pocket piece on top of this lining piece. You want the right sides of both pieces facing UP. Match up the bottom corners and sides. The pocket piece will be roughly a ¾ short at the top. Using safety pins, pin all four layers together in a few places in the center. Remove the first set of pins. Use lined boards to be sure boards will fit snugly in each pocket, make adjustments if necessary and then topstitch along these lines. Using a water soluble or disappearing pen or chalk mark your pocket lines as per the Measurement Chart. Fold one 3 square in half wrong sides together. Press. Topstitch 1/8 along the folded edge. Place in bottom right corner with unfinished edges lined up with each edge. Pin in place. Please do not distribute this pattern without my permission. Page 5 of 9
Fold the other 3 square in half right sides together. Stitch one side closed with a ¼ seam. Clip corner, turn and press. Top stitch 1/8 along the folded edge. Place on the opposite side with the finished edge lined up with pocket line 4 and the unfinished side lined up with the bottom edge. Topstitch in place 1/8 along finished side edge. Place ½ elastic pieces on interior as shown. (The sides should be approximately 3 down and the tops ½ from the center). Stretch elastic slightly and pin in place. Use your device to test position. Section 4 Putting It All Together Attach interfacing to outer fabric. Turn right side up and measure 3 in from the center of the right side of outer fabric piece and mark button placement. Sew on button. Make a loop and pin 1/8 elastic at the center of the left side of outer fabric piece. (Opposite the button.) Place outer fabric and interior right sides together. Pin in place marking a 3 gap for turning with double needles as shown. Please do not distribute this pattern without my permission. Page 7 of 9
Sew together with a 1/2 seam allowance. Clip corners and turn. Before pressing and closing, test your boards and tablet to see how they fit. Make adjustments to seams and elastic if necessary. Press. Press. Press. Stich left hand elastic piece along pocket line 4. Trim excess elastic. Use an invisible ladder stitch to hand sew the opening closed. Topstitch 1/8 away from the edge. (I chose to slightly round my corners.) Stitch again over the pocket lines. Please do not distribute this pattern without my permission. Page 8 of 9
