Group Run Overview We have group runs planned for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All group runs will start at the Port Marina Park Visitor Center parking lot located directly west of the Best Western Plus Hood River Inn across Button Bridge Drive on E Marina Port Drive. Arrive at the run staging area 15 minutes prior to run start for a drivers meeting and directions. Arrive with a Full Tank of Gas Zero (0.0) your odometer as you leave the staging area parking lot at the intersection of E Port Marina Drive and Button Bridge Road. Set your FRS radio to channel 7 Turn on headlights or daytime running lights Remember to Breadcrumb the car behind you Thursday Early Bird Run Hood River Fruit Loop with Kim Smith The run will start at 1:00 pm at the Port Marina Park Visitor Center parking lot. This is a run for the early arrivals before check-in. We will have a tour of the Hood River Fruit Loop, a scenic 35 mile (56 km) loop in the Hood River Valley located in the national scenic area of the Columbia River Gorge, and the nation s largest pear-growing region. We will have stops along the way at fruit stands and wineries. The tour will have you back in plenty of time for Hot Lava and hotel check-in at 4:00 pm. Run duration is approximately 3 hours. Friday Run #1 - Mt St Helens Windy Ridge - with David and Sylvia Foster The run will start at 8:30 am at the Port Marina Park Visitor Center parking lot.
We will head off across the Columbia River on the Hood River Bridge ($1 toll, cash only) into Washington State. We then head up the scenic Columbia River Gorge to the Wind River Highway on our way up to Windy Ridge Viewpoint located on the backside of Mt St Helens with breathtaking views of the mountain and Spirit Lake. The Hood River to Mt St Helens run is an all-day event, plan on 3 hours minimum each way with stops, plus an hour or more at the volcano overlook for lunch and a ranger talk. So plan on 7.5 to 8 hours. We plan to arrive in time for the ranger talk at 12:30, so we ll leave at 8:30 to allow for a bathroom stop along the way and viewpoint photo opportunities. There are multiple good toilets at Windy Ridge but no park store with food or snacks, so plan on bringing bottled water/drinks and any snacks you need in addition to the lunches we ll bring. Due to road conditions this will be a moderate-speed run. There will be sections of main road/55mph, but the national forest roads are basically 40 mph due to curves. These are seasonal roads (NF Road 99 into the viewpoint didn t open until August 23 due to pavement repairs); all roads are paved and 99% are good, but there are a few points requiring slowing to 20mph, or possibly stopping due to oncoming traffic, to negotiate some short slumped or cracked pavement stretches. On the final road to the viewpoint there are currently about 5 graveled stretches (50-500 yards) that should be paved by mid-september, but they all are in the returning lane and can be either driven around or driven slowly if there is oncoming tourist traffic. For those who ve googled other articles that show temporary bridges or washout detours along the route, those were replaced long ago with permanent roadway bridges. The round-trip is about 190 miles, so make sure your gas tank is topped off the night before we leave, since there are no gas stations once we get into the mountains. Also make sure your personal bathroom tank is empty, since the first rest stop along the route (1hr 20 min) is at Eagle Cliff Store, which has one public bathroom. Run distance is approximately 194 miles (310 km), driving time is approx. 5.5 hours and total duration is approx. 8 hours. Bridge toll fees are not included.
Friday Run #2 Timberline / Dufur with Don Peter and Dave Russell The run will start at 8:45 am at the Port Marina Park Visitor Center parking lot. Don and Dave will guide you on a run towards Historic Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood and through the eastern Oregon high desert farming towns of Tygh Valley and Dufur. We ll head south through the fruit orchards of the Hood river Valley and then up Cooper Spur to play on some twisties. We ll return to Hwy 35 and follow it to Hwy 26, then up to historic Timberline Lodge for our first break. We ll then head east through forest and rangeland into eastern Oregon with a stop at the farming town of Dufur for a visit at the historic museum, old bank with a million antlers and Kramer s famous deli for lunch. From there it is on back along the Dufur Valley Rd and scenic Hwy 35 to Hood River and back to start. General Event Information Run Formation Area - All group runs will start at the Port Marina Park Visitor Center parking lot located directly west of the Best Western Plus Hood River Inn across Button Bridge Drive on E Marina Port Drive. Radios: Many of us will be using FRS radios during the runs. We will be utilizing channel 7. The radios are very useful in aiding the run leader to stay in contact with the sweep and report any roadway or traffic concerns to other members. At times the caravan may get strung out and information may not make it between the sweep and the run leader. It is often helpful if members midway in the caravan can relay the information between the run leader and sweep, especially if you are aware that they may be getting out of range of each other. Please keep chit chat to a minimum and confined to reporting road hazards or that occasional deer or bear you see hiding in the woods. Lights: All members are encouraged to use headlights or daytime running lights during all runs. Bread Crumbing: We will be using bread crumbing procedures during all runs. Watch the car BEHIND you Do not make a turn at any intersection or change in direction without the car behind you seeing you make the turn. STOP AND WAIT for them to catch up before proceeding. KEEP UP and stay together. Don t leave big gaps between cars. Large gaps allow interlopers to join the caravan and contribute to losing sight of the cars in front or behind you.
