BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) January 15, I960 BANK DEBITS TO DEMAND DEPOSIT ACCOUNTS EXCEPT INTERBANK AND U.S. GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTS Bank debits to demand deposit accounts, except interbank and U.S. Government accounts, as reported by banks in 344 leading centers for the month of December aggregated $261 billion. During the past three months debits amounted to $709 billion or 11.6 per cent above the total reported for the corresponding period a year ago. At banks in New York. City there was an increase of 16.7 per cent compared with the corresponding three-months period a year ago; at 6 other centers the increase was 8.5 per cent; and at 337 other centers it was 8.5 per cent. Preliminary estimates of the annual rates of turnover of demand deposits, without seasonal adjustment, in December are 66.8 at New York City, 35-5 at 6 other centers, and 26.7 at 337 other centers.
