Cruising along this road, you ll understand why locals say it s one of the prettiest rides in North America, with stunning panoramic views of sprawling estates in the hills above and the glittering blue expanse of the ocean below. If you re up for a challenge, take on the classic Gibraltar Road climb, where you can pedal up and turn around anytime, but the views only get better the higher you go! Back in Santa Barbara, stop at a cafe for a quick lunch on your own then return to the hotel before this afternoon s main event: the finish of Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California. ITINERARY DAY 3: FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2014 Live Viewing of Amgen Tour of California Stage 6 Finish from Amgen VIP Hospitality Tent: Mountain High Basic Option: Santa Clarita to Mountain High Approximately 66 miles with 7,200 feet of climbing Short Option: Palmdale to Mountain High Approximately 34 miles with 4,700 feet of climbing An invigorating day lies ahead as the pros take on today s Stage 6 route to the summit finish at Mountain High. With the finish line located at 6,000 feet, this strategic stage may well provide a surprise shake-up in the General Classification. After breakfast a 90 minute shuttle will take you to Santa Clarita, where your ride will begin with a quiet climb up Bouquet Canyon before passing through Palmdale and continuing to Mountain High. Today s riding is mostly uphill, but your Trek Travel support vehicle and guides will be on-hand to offer encouragement, snacks and a boost if needed. Enjoy delicious food, refreshing drinks and all the live race action as you watch the drama unfold on the big screen TVs in the Amgen VIP hospitality tent. After a relaxed breakfast and a stroll through the manicured grounds of the Westlake Village Inn, you ll board your bike and pedal east before turning south toward the iconic Pacific Coast Highway. Cycle along the coast and past Point Mugu State Park before turning back into the hills and climbing Mulholland Highway one of the locals favorite climbs. Alternatively you can shuttle to lunch at the renowed Malibu Cafe at Calamigos Ranch. The Gerson family first opened a restaurant on this property four generations ago, and they continue to serve dishes inspired by the cowboy lifestyle and perfected over the years. After this memorable meal, continue riding or shuttle back to the hotel, stopping along the way for a tasting at the Cornell Winery. Once back at the hotel, relax by the secluded pool or perhaps schedule a visit to the on-site spa. Check out the expo this morning as the excitement of the Grand Finale day builds around you, before America s premier pro cycling race claims the streets of Thousand Oaks. Feel the electricity surge through the crowd as the racers draw near and cheer your favorite riders on their way to the finish line. After, join your companions for lunch at a nearby cafe before heading out on an idyllic afternoon ride through the Santa Monica Mountains chaparral, live-oak woodlands and grasslands. The backdrop of your ride may seem a little bit familiar from the large number of movie and television shows filmed in this area since the 1920s. Choose from two loop rides, both of which will take you past Paramount Ranch, a National Park site that contains a portion of Paramount Pictures original movie ranch; or stop into the King Gillette Ranch, the shooting location of CBS s The Biggest Loser! This circuit, featured in the final stage of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California, takes you past one of the most famous motorcyclist hangouts in the world: The Rock Store. Stop in to say hi to owners Ed and Vern, who have welcomed visitors to their restaurant since the early 1960s. Or, you may choose to sleep in or take a stroll around the beautiful grounds of the inn and enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning before check-out. You ll say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at the Westlake Village Inn. You ll then shuttle 1-2 hours, depending on traffic, to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to arrive at approximately 1:00 PM. ARRIVING & DEPARTING HOW TO GET THERE Flights We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA) in Goleta, approximately 8 miles from downtown Santa Barbara. Most major U.S.-based airlines serve this airport. From just outside baggage claim you can hail a cab for ground transportation, and a cab from the airport to downtown will cost approximately $40. If you are staying at the pickup hotel, Fess Parker s DoubleTree Resort offers a complimentary on-call shuttle for guests to and from the airport.
