idaho airstream club a word from our president Despite a rough start (trying to guess the weather) in February, it has become a great camping season. We started our season in an old/new campground in Glenns Ferry, ID. Then moved on to two big events, Region 10 and International, in our Oregon backyard where we were able to have plenty of fun times learning new things, hanging out with family and making new friends and reconnecting with old friends. But there are plenty of good times to come! August (23rd-26th) brings our fall business meeting and Installation Rally in Pollock, ID. The September (20th-23rd) rally is in the City of Rocks and October closes out the season with two great rallies: The Trailing of the Sheep in Ketchum, ID on October 11th-14th and the Sun Valley Jazz and Music Festival (a Region 10 Special Event Rally), in Sun Valley, ID the 17th-21st. Check with the rally hosts if any of these events interests you. (These are mostly all new events for our family, and I hope to participate with (at least) the Trailing of the Sheep Rally.) See you on the road... Peter Goedeking phone: (208) 891-9083 email: goedp@yahoo.com See all the info included here -this one s been around the world! I love vintage trailers (that s why we have one--ours is a 1957). This pointy Clipper at the Salem International was especially intriguing! Cara, Ellie and I (and our 2 dogs-loretta the Lab and Blu the Chihuahua) enjoyed some beach time at Lincoln City, OR during the Salem International Rally IDAHO UNIT OFFICERS President - Peter Goedeking 1st Vice President - Tom Usselman 2nd Vice President - Bill Sargent Secretary - Betty Burke Treasurer - Earl Brace Past President - Fonny Davidson Trustees - Charlie Burke, Pete Petersen, Jerry Settle, Ray Hoem Page 2-Upcoming Events/Sunshine News/Welcome Pages 3-4-Membership News & Spotlight (Hoems) Page 5-Bits, Bites & Rivets Page 6-Rallies 2019 & Rally Survey Page 7-August Installation Rally Info & Coupon Page 8-September Rally Info & Coupons Page 9-October Rally Info & Coupon Page 10-11-International Rally Re-Cap & Photos Page 12-Rally Schedule/Ads & Links 1

Membership News from Mim Davidson, Membership Chair Fonny and I attended our first International Rally! It was exciting to see Airstreams everywhere we looked - nearly 700 were there. We met people from all around the country. Our assigned parking site was far away from the activity hub, so I got my steps (and more) every day when I attended various seminars. We learned about club membership, rally planning, camping apps, maintenance and appraisal ideas, and much more. We also found our way around Salem to visit restaurants, museums, shops, etc. The Wally Byam Airstream Club is growing quickly! 36 members join each week. 19 families became part of the Idaho Unit already this year. While in Salem, we met 2 more families who are moving to Idaho and plan to join our unit, and 1 family who chose to affiliate with Idaho. We are delighted to welcome new members. Here is a snapshot of their home areas: 3 new in North Idaho and Washington (13 total) 14 - Southwestern Idaho and eastern Oregon (60 total) 2 - Southeastern Idaho and Utah (15 total) as well members in western Oregon and Alberta Camp with us and join us for breakfast whenever you can. Help us plan for our rallies by sharing your favorite campgrounds or your bucket list locales. From New Members... Introducing Chris Beck and Maggie McCormick of Boise, ID We have been on the go non-stop since we bought the Airstream! The 1965 Sovereign is our first RV. We have been dreaming of it for the better part of the 6 years we have been together. Then one day I found her on Craigslist and we jumped. We are beyond excited. Chris and I both work full time. He is in IT and I am in Talent Acquisition. Combined we have 5 kids (4 still at home). We have our kids 50% of the time and so we plan to use the Airstream a lot when it is just the two of us and, of course, take the kids out from time to time. Outside of that we both enjoy hiking, traveling and are active volunteers with the USA Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Rescue. We love our dogs! Unfortunately, our next trip is scheduled for the weekend of the meet up. We are taking all the kids and the Airstream to Oregon to go hike. Introducing Bud & Catherine Langerak of Ammon, ID Our 2018 28 RT Flying Cloud is our first adventure into the Airstream world, and first bumper pull RV. This is our fourth RV. The first three RVs taught us what we wanted in our Airstream, and more importantly, what we didn t want. We ve been out just fourteen nights so far, and have loved every minute. Bud is a retired law enforcement Lieutenant, having served with the Bonneville County Sheriff s Office, Idaho Falls. Bud also has his Commercial Driver s License, and for fun (?) drives big rigs cross-country. Catherine is a retired RN, having managed a Gynecology/Oncology program for many years at our local hospital. With our granddaughters (2) living next door, Catherine stays very busy. Living in southeast Idaho is a real blessing. It s wonderful to live within a 2½-hour drive of places people travel from all over the world to experience. Yep, we re spoiled. We re both looking forward to meeting many of you at the Boise breakfasts and at rallies in the near future. Already, we feel very welcome in the Airstream community. 3

4 Tell us about your family...we ve been married for a half a century!! We have 2 kids by blood and 10 more (exchange students) all over the world. Our son Shawn is married and lives in Emmett. Our daughter Tammy is married and lives in Olympia. We also have 2 dogs (both border collies)-trixie (age 6) and Captain (age 1-1/2). Tell us how you two met...college days at Montana State University. I (Sherry) just broke up with a guy and needed a date to a sorority party and my sorority sister told me to call Ray (he was renting space in her parent s house). I called and we went to the party. Ray then graduated, moved to Rupert and got drafted into the Army. My folks and I moved to Florida. Between basic and advanced training Ray had a 2 week Christmastime break and we had a $200 wedding (that s including rings) at the Justice of the Peace. How long have you been members? 3 years. What kind of Airstream do you have? Other trailers? We currently have a 2007 Classic Ltd. 31 ft. Before that we had a 79 23 ft. Safari that we purchased from my (Sherry s) brother--had it for 12 years and Ray remodeled it. And before that we had an Alaskan camper for about 11 years. Why did you join the club/who asked you? Mim, it s all her fault. What has been your favorite trip or rally (as part of the club)? The Eclipse Rally in Stanley. So much fun and great camaraderie...felt like we became part of the family there...and, of course, the solar eclipse was very cool. What is the most interesting place you ve visited? It wasn t part of a club trip, but the Kartchner Caverns in Arizona (near Benson) are really great. Also we went on a caravan with Fantasy Tours (with 13 rigs, 26 people) on Baja Mexico--we went gray whale watching and everyone got to touch them-- so amazing! Any places we haven t gone that you would recommend to others? Yellowstone, Glacier Park, and the Missouri River. Besides traveling in your Airstream, what are your hobbies/interests? Ray is a sheep farmer & enjoys working on computers (he was a computer teacher in the 70s), woodworking, and reading (he belongs to the Buhl Book Club...he especially likes books on natural resources as he was also a wildlife biologist and then retired to farming). I enjoy artsy stuff--painting, pottery, knitting, fiberwork and felting. If I need something for around the house, I make it! We both enjoy birding...we took over a bluebird trail in the Camas prairie (west of Fairfield, ID) so once a week we go take care of the birds and boxes. Member Spotlight RAY and SHERRY HOEM from Buhl, ID Circa 1987. Back: Ray, Sherry, Sergio (from Rio, Brazil), Stefie from Lubeck, Germany), Tonio (from Mexico City), son Shawn. Front: Nana (from Mexico City), Karla (from Rio, Brazil), and daughter Tammy.

bits, bites and rivets DIRECTORY UPDATE! Please update your directory for Susie Borowicz s email: some copies have an error in her adress. Her correct email address is: susanborowicz@gmail.com UNIT FLAG UPDATE! Sorry for the delay (we had some issues with where we needed to order the flag from and the quantity and pricing), but the NEW unit flags have been ordered and should (hopefully) be here soon...we hope by the August breakfast. We have flags ordered for 13 (Archers, Burkes, Canadas, DeLaPeñas, Doerings, Gadds, Goedekings, Hennings, Merells, Schloessler/Lantz-Miracle, Settles, Warrens, Usselmans). After all the hoopla, the final cost per flag is $54. We will have 10 additional flags available for purchase. If you didn t order one, but would now like one, please contact Unit President, Pete Goedeking, by phone (208) 891-9083 or by email at goedp@yahoo.com. MEMBER RECIPE: Chipotle and Rosemary Roasted Nuts from Susie Borowicz Ingredients: 3 cups whole roasted unsalted cashews (14 oz) 2 cups whole walnut halves (7 oz) 2 cups whole pecan halves (7 oz) 1/2 cup whole almonds (3 oz) 1/3 cup pure maple syrup 1/4 cup light brown sugar 3 Tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice 2 tsp ground chipotle powder 4 Tbsp minced fresh rosemary leaves, dried Kosher salt Vegetable oil Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush a sheet pan generously with vegetable oil. Combine all nuts, 2 Tbsp of vegetable oil, the maple syrup, brown sugar, orange juice & chipotle powder on the sheet pan. Toss to coat the nuts evenly. Add 2 Tbsp of rosemary and 2 tsp of salt and toss again. Spread the nuts on two bakery sheets (you can use aluminum foil for ease of clean-up). Bake pans separately. Roast for 25 minutes (watch CLOSELY last 5 minutes!!), stirring twice with a large metal spatula, until the nuts are glazed and golden brown. Remove from oven and sprinkle with more salt (to taste) and remaining 2 Tbsp of rosemary. Toss well and set aside at room temperature, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking as they cool. Taste for seasoning. Serve warm or cool completely and store in airtight containers at room temperature. 5

RALLIES 2019 Hello to all members! First, I would like to thank all those members who have hosted a rally this year, and the co-hosts as well. Some of you have hosted numerous rallies recently - thank you so much! We all appreciate having planned monthly camp outs-it is a very special part of our club! Now it is time to begin planning rallies for next year, and I would like to have the 2019 Rally Schedule completed at our August Installation Rally. If you are new to WBCCI, we would love to have you serve as a co-host to learn the planning process. We have many members with lots of experience to guide you. If you are one of those more experienced members and you have not hosted a rally for a year or two, I would encourage you to be willing to be a rally host in 2019. We need hosts monthly from April-October, and currently we have tentative plans for the June and September rallies. There are many beautiful locations both near and far (but not too far), and nice little towns where perhaps an urban rally could be planned on the streets of town. I would love to hear from you in the near future; tell me a month that works for you to be a host, whether or not you need me to find you a cohost, and a place where you would like to take us! Yes, it is a bit of work to do the planning, but so worthwhile in the end and a joy for many of your friends. I am also including an informal survey (see below)-please take a few minutes to think about it, complete it, and email me your thoughts. Thank you! Sharon Lawrence, Rally Chairman. 541-212-9202. Sklawrence50@msn.com PLEASE TAKE THIS rally SURVEY! Since I am not familiar with Survey Monkey, but would like feedback from as many members as possible regarding rally planning for 2019, please respond to the following questions and email you thoughts to me. I would love to receive feedback any time, but the sooner the better! Return via email to Sklawrence50@msn.com. 1. Where are some places you would like to see rallies held next year? 2. Do you feel we go east/north enough to include members in those parts of our unit? 3. Are you willing to host or co-host next year?? What months are best for you? 4. What types of activities do you enjoy at rallies? 5. Suggestions for improving rallies you have attended: 6. Do you feel rallies must be planned for 3rd weekends only? Do you prefer Thursday-Sunday rallies, or Friday- Monday rallies? 7. What is the maximum number of miles you would travel for a rally? Other Comments? All comments are appreciated. Thank you! 6

International RALLY Re-CAP by Cara Goedeking So much to do, so much to see...and yes, maybe a bit overwhelming for this first-timer BUT still highly enjoyed! The 61st International Rally in Salem Rally was a well-attended event (there were over 700 Airstreams there!!) and a definite hit! We had a FABULOUS turn-out of Idaho Unit members totaling 18 rigs, plus six affiliates too who joined us for some unit events. There were so many offerings--including (but definitely not limited to) the Airstream Adventures Northwest display of new trailers, all the great vendors, informative seminars, presentations and roundtable discussions, the pet show, the Friday Flea Market (where a few of us Idahoans sold our crafty wares), the Vintage Airstream parade and open house which boasted one of the earliest known trailers (a 1936 Silver Cloud wooden trailer) and a 1955 Cruiser once owned by Wally himself. There were also great tours to take (thanks to Terri Warren, our Region 10 president) and entertainment was provided most nights (our family s favorite was Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts playing the oldies with lots of dancing going on!). The opening ceremony with the flag presentation was a pretty awesome spectacle (makes you proud to be part of such an amazing international club). International President Jim Cocke and First Lady Debbie Wood along with the Rally committee, the Rally chairmen, and the hundreds of volunteers are to be commended for putting on an amazing, fun-filled rally. So glad it was out West this year!! Many Idaho Unit members (and a few affiliates) enjoyed a fun Happy Hour together. Charlie Burke won a Blue Ribbon for his latch-hook wall hanging. 10
