Kosovo in brief The total surface area is 1.1 million ha. Kosovo is circled with mountains. Within Kosova there are two plain areas running north to south, divided by central hills. Kosova has continental and semi-continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. Average annual temperatures is 10.3 C, while during vegetation period is 16.5 C. Kosovo s continental climate is characterized by temperatures ranging from -20C during the winter to +35C during the summer. Average rainfall us up to 744.8 ml.

Population Total resident population in Kosovo is estimated to be nearly 2 million; Nearly 2/3 of the population live in rural areas; Nearly 33% of the total population is less than 15 years old, and more than 50% is under 25; Nearly 6% of the total population is more than 65 years old 61% of the total population is active (15-64 years)

Resources for NTFP in Kosovo The total forest land in Kosovo are 455,000 ha, The soil and climatic conditions allow the growth of a lot of medical herbs in Kosovo, MAFRD ranked NTFP for the future programs of agricultural policies of our country, through developmental programmes in different private enterprises and municipalities, Kosovo has different kinds of NTFP, many of which people are unaware of. We don t have enough information regarding the evaluation of chemical content, in the biological and pharmacological aspect of the NTFP which grow and can be cultivated in Kosovo. There isn t inventory of NTFP.

Legislation (Forest Law No 2003/3) Article 21, Using of Non-Wood Forest Products. 21.1 a) No person may harvest NWFP for commercial purposes from land under the administration of the Forest Agency without license. The forest Agency may issue licenses to harvest NTWP upon finding that the harvest is consistent with sustainable use of the forest.

Non-timber forest products in Kosovo One of the components is support to the non-timber forest products: Medicinal and aromatic herbs, Culinary herbs, Mushrooms, Wild berries (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, etc).
