Shanghai Centre Talk Dear Residents, My story with Shanghai Centre started years ago, when fresh out of a two year specialization scholarship in Anhui Normal University I had the opportunity to run the Summer Camp at Shanghai Centre providing a mix of interactive children's activities for the residents. That short summer job has led to my next position as Director for Active Kidz Shanghai. I found myself working with kids of all ages by organizing a wide variety of after school and weekend activities for the expatriate youth. Time flew by and six years later I am back at Shanghai Centre This time though, I will not be your Camp Director but as Marketing Director I will be the one hiring the Camp Director! Over the years, Shanghai Centre has been subject to a multitude of positive changes adhering to its life at your doorstep slogan: High end retailers, popular restaurants, healthcare centers, a post-office and beauty salon opened their doors amidst newly renovated luxury apartments, an outdoor multi-purpose recreation area and an abundance of tailored residents activities. Regardless of the season, Shanghai Centre offers a variety of great activities for its residents: the popular Farmers' Market is back after a long break so families can resume fun weekend shopping at the rejuvenated Shanghai Centre motor court. Want to give a helping hand? Participate in our spring Clothes Donation Drive collecting goodies for the less privileged areas in China. The sporty ones can live it up at the Annual Shanghai Centre Golf Tournament which will be hosted at the stunning Nine Dragons Admiral Golf Club. Cover Story Looking cool, keep cool Summer in Shanghai is hot, undeniably so and often unbearably so. The only thing to do is to fight the heat by looking cool and keeping cool. Enjoy the summer delights of alfresco dining, indulge in some cool summer beverages and make sure you are in the latest summer fashions. Finally, the simplest way to cool off is to take a dip in the pool. Summer gives us all the opportunity to get outside, especially after long days and nights hiding inside from the winter cold. Alfresco dining is one of life's little pleasures getting together with friends or family and enjoying the feeling of relaxation this style of dining inspires. At the Shanghai Centre there are many choices for experiencing that European café environment. Watch the world go by on Nanjing Lu as you enjoy brunch on the terrace at Element Fresh. Over at Paul, you can imagine yourself in the streets of Paris as you enjoy a divine cake and a coffee under the shade of their umbrellas. Alternatively, on the other side of the Centre, add a little sparkle to your life by sipping champagne or sparkling wine in the open air at Cheese and Fizz or enjoy casual outdoor dining right next door at the California Pizza Kitchen. Keeping cool is no problem at the Long Bar, where they not only make the drinks, but can offer advice on the best summer beverages and how to serve them. For summer sophistication, a chilled chardonnay is the way forward. A balance of fruit, acidity and texture, it's an ideal accompaniment for lighter summer foods such as fish and poultry, but can also go well with cheeses and spicy foods. Sophie Huang from the Long Bar suggests that wine requiring chilling should be served at between 9 C -12 C because if a wine is too cold then some of the more subtle delicate flavours may become hidden. However, if some of the flavours of a certain wine don't quite suit your palate, chill the wine down and you might not be able to taste them anymore. A nice, cold beer is also a great way to end a summer's day and should be served at 3C- 8 C, particularly because a higher temperature means more carbonation is released creating a bigger head, which is not a good thing. For cocktail drinkers, the frozen margarita is a worldwide favourite for summer imbibing. Huang gives the following recipe for making one at home: 1 cup of ice cubes 1 1/2 oz tequila 1/2 oz lime juice 1/2 oz triple sec 2 oz sour mix (if you can get it, but Sophie likes to replace it with concentrated lemon juice, as it tastes more refreshing) Mix all ingredients in blender until slushy & creamy and serve in a salt - rimmed glass. When not cooling down with a refreshing beverage, clothing choices can make all the difference to surviving the summer as well. Over at Marc Jacobs, the Spring/Summer 2008 show featured plenty of layering, practical to take the wearer through to the cooler evening, with cheeky flashes of skin and some sky-high hemlines perhaps destined for Shanghai Centre May June 3
Centre News the very brave among us. Sheer fabrics revealing the body and displays of underwear may only succeed in causing temperatures to rise! Prints include a gorgeous bright floral print on black echoing this season's trend for bright, clear colour. Shoes for showing off pretty summer pedicures include flipflops with bright straps topped with a large black sphere, and the return-to-childhood jelly ballet flats. For a more sophisticated look, black lace covered slingbacks and flats reflect the use of sheer fabrics in the runway collection. fitness centre has both a 20 metre long indoor and a round outdoor swimming pool to cool off in. Water is very therapeutic and the centre offers swimming lessons for both adults and children, so you can swim off stress with breaststroke, or tone up that body for flaunting in summer clothes with freestyle. Add the steam bath, sauna and whirlpool located in the men's and women's locker rooms to satiate all your aquatic desires. Finally, if tanning is your thing, the outdoor pool has a terrace where furniture will be set up from May for lying, basilisk-like, in the sun. Keeping cool and looking cool suddenly seems so much easier, and the summer beckons.. Relocation of the Resident lounge Mid May, Resident Lounge East (E 820) will find a new home at the West Retail Plaza! The brand new lounge with its patio overlooking the Rose garden will be the place to be for all our popular resident events. All the present amenities will remain plus we have added some outdoor furniture to enjoy some cool evenings outside The Farmers' Market is back! The rejuvenation project of the Shanghai Centre Exhibition Plaza is about to finish so we are happy to resume the popular Farmers' Market. The renewed area will offer more space for vendors to sell their home-made products. Make sure you don't miss it!! Charity Drive for River of Hearts Your chance to clean up your closet and get rid of all those nice goodies you have forgotten about Shanghai Centre is happy to continue working together with River of Hearts whom will sort and distribute your donations to underprivileged families in Shanghai and surrounding provinces. You can drop off clothes, bedding and toys on Saturday & Sunday, May 24-25 from 10am to 4pm. Gucci has worked cool neutrals in their accessories range with plenty of snakeskin and swinging tassels on bags. Choosing between a teetering stiletto and an elegant flat sandal may be a difficult decision. The Joy collection continues a classic theme with bling bling snatches of patent leather and gold. However, the Hysteria collection, all brash patent leather and sugary, candy pink with heavy gold detailing takes the cake. Men's accessories get in on the act too with super-shiny silver brogues that look like they have been chromed. In the runway collection, a monochrome palette of black, white and grey has been broken up with bright yellow and pink with skinny pants, high hemlines and a lot of strapless and one-shoulder looks appearing. And if wearing too many clothes seems too hard in the heat, slip into a swimsuit and get into the water. Kidstuff Butterflies in the laundry room! April was My Community -month for the kids so Jan Vereecken, long-term resident and Project Director of the Shanghai Centre took the Butterfly class on a discovery-tour of the Shanghai Centre complex. Stops included the laundry room of the hotel, the chiller room and the security room. They finished their visit at the post-office where they mailed a letter to their parents The mailman didn't have to go too far for delivery! Retailer Section Theater A Mostly Acoustic Evening -- Steven Curtis Chapman 2008 Shanghai Concert Centre Spotlight Hollywood Glamour Iconic shoe and fashion label, Ferragamo, has been in the Shanghai Centre since 1996 representing the brand's heritage of creativity, craftsmanship and quality. Eighty years old this year, the brand was started by Salvatore Ferragamo who was a shoemaker for many Hollywood stars. Now, Ferragamo has developed into a fashion house with full collection in Ready-to-Wear, handbags, silk and accessories for both men and ladies. Perhaps Ferragamo's most famous contribution to fashion was the wedge shoe, devised after steel for a plate Ferragamo had patented in the 1920s to support the arch of the foot was no longer available. Using cork instead, the wedge was born and was one of the most famous fashion inventions of the 1940s. Shanghai was the first stop for the Ferragamo 80th anniversary exhibition and here at the Shanghai Centre, the Spring/Summer 2008 collection is looking as glamorous as ever with sharply cinched waists and an emphasis on a long, lean silhouette with ground-sweeping hemlines. After starting his career in the late 80s as a songwriter, Chapman has turned into one of the most prolific singers in the genre, releasing more than 20 albums to this date. As of 2007, he has sold more than 10 million albums and has 9 gold and platinum albums. Chapman has also won five Grammy awards and 51 Gospel Music Association Awards, more than any other artist in history. The last concert on Steven's China Tour will be held at the Shanghai Centre. Centre Scene Out and About in Shanghai Centre 1 Event Recap Easter Party The Easter party was a big success for both kids and adults! Ms Doria did an excellent job decorating the Atrium to bring everybody in a festive mood; excited little kids raced around the Theatre and Atrium on a feverish Easter Egg hunt. For the residents this event was a great opportunity to catch up on the latest news over a glass of wine with excellent catering from the Ritz-Carlton. 1.
