President's Page - May I'm looking forward to the challenges of my position for the 2017-18 year. Barbara has set the bar high and I'll have to push hard to keep up that standard of excellence. Other members of the previous board have made the past season fun, entertaining and productive. Some of them have stayed on in either the same or different positions. However we do have a few board members that are new to their posts: Jeffrey Morgan Rich Darling Elke Schoellkopf Mike Rogers Programs Coordinator Trips Racing Activities Coordinator We already have plans for many summer activities and beyond. Read your newsletter and mark your calendars for upcoming events so you don't miss out. Start with the summer Saturdays at members' homes where we can swim, boat and have homemade food: June 3rd at Bob and Diane Butscher's home on Lake Blalock, July 8th at Teresa Bowers' pool on Spartanburg's west side, and August 5th at Ted and Conni's Lake Bowen home The board works hard to come up with ideas that we hope you'll enjoy but we're always open to suggestions. Do you know a place that would be interesting to visit? Do you know of a restaurant where the Club would enjoy dining? Do you have any ideas that would be fun for our monthly membership meeting? Tell any one of the board members and we can see if we can incorporate your recommendations. Hope to see you soon. Pat Page 2

Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens Saturday, May 13 th It s a great time of year to visit beautiful gardens in our area, Daniel Stowe has multiple gardens with full color on display. They are east of Gastonia, NC at 6500 South New Hope Road, Belmont, NC. Check out their website: http://www.dsbg.org/. Admission is $11.95 for adults and $10.95 for seniors (60 and over). We will dine at Daddy Joe s Beach House BBQ in Gaffney at 11:30 AM. Daddy Joe s is located at 1400 West Floyd Baker Blvd which is approximately a mile on the left before the town. Great BBQ (and other stuff). Here s the website: http://www.daddyjoesbbq.com/index.shtml?menumain. Let me know if you can make it to either or both. We look forward to sharing this beautiful experience with you. Mike Rogers Special Events Page 3

Little Bradley Waterfall Hike I ve changed the original date for this hike to Sunday, May 7 th. This is a lovely waterfall near Saluda, N C. We will meet at the Marathon/Triangle Stop gas station at the Saluda exit on I-26 at 10.30. The trail is just over a mile out and then return with several stream crossings. Wear good walking shoes or boots and bring water and a snack for our stop at the falls. After the hike we will drive in to Saluda for lunch at the Saluda Grade Café. Our previous hike in the Saluda area was a huge success. We had a large turn out of club members and Evo brought friends from a Spartanburg hiking club. We had so many that it was hard to get a good count. I think it was 23. Most of the group also had lunch in Saluda at the Green River BBQ. The masses of wild flowers were astonishing and we also viewed Melrose Falls. Mark McCall There will be sign up at our May meeting. If you don t sign up then call or e-mail me. 864 580 0891 mmccall1@windstream.net Sunday, May 21, 2017 at 12 noon Zanes at Woodfin Ridge Skiclubbers, Please join us for a lovely Sunday afternoon brunch at Woodfin Ridge. There will be assorted salads, an omelet station, two meat entrees, vegetables, potatoes, assorted desserts & beverage... all this for just $16.45 per person, includes tax & gratuity. The menu for the week should be available the week of our reservation. Several of our club members are Sunday regulars, so it must be good because they keep going back! A sign-up sheet will be at the May meeting at Va du Mar McMillan Park or you can e-mail me at akimball@bellsouth.net. I would be remiss however, for those expecting a cocktail with their meal, if I did not tell you that no alcohol is available for this Brunch... Thanks ~ Alison Page 4

Flat Rock Playhouse A Tuna Christmas Sunday, May 28 th, 2:00PM This is one of the funniest plays we have ever seen (yes many of us have seen it before). Scott Treadway and Preston Dyar play multiple characters (male and female). We highly recommend this play. Tickets are $45 and $50. They can be purchased on line at http://www.flatrockplayhouse.org/show/a-tuna-christmas/. We will also dine either before or after the play with a time and place to be decided later. Let me know if you will attend either or both. You must purchase your own tickets. Jackson and I Need Your Help Well as you can see my little red wagon is almost empty! It is that time of year when the Spartanburg Humane Society is bursting at the seams. Jackson and I would love your help. Please start stocking up on Pedigree dog food, any brand of cat food and kitten food. I'll have my wagon at the June meeting at the Butscher's. That gives you plenty of time to shop. But wait, you are not off the hook this month. Our Frogmore Stew is only $5.00!!!! What a bargain! Bring some extra money for my raffle. It only takes one ticket to win (but you have better odds if you buy six for $5.00.) I'll have my "magic box" there as well. Drop in a few dollars. It will go a long way in helping others. NOTES Any Spartanburg Ski Club member may submit items for publication in the newsletter. Publication deadlines can be found on the pullout calendar included in the newsletter each month. Call Taylor for information on how to submit your newsletter item. Also, don t forget - the club has a tent available for rent. It is an 18 X 20 tent, and it is easy to assemble. We also have 4 tables that can be rented with or without the tent. We have the makings for that special occasion and it is all very reasonably priced! Tent rental is $ 35. Tables can be rented for $5 per table. Remember; don t have a party without the comfort of shade. Your guests will appreciate it and so will the club! For rentals of either tent or tables contact Joy Bobo. The Spartanburg Ski & Outing Club normally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are located at the Chapman Cultural Center (West Wing) on East St. John Street in Spartanburg on the first floor. During the summer months (June, July, and August) meetings are frequently held, more informally, at different sites and times. Therefore it is necessary to consult the club web site or a current newsletter for the time and location. April s meeting is held at the Piedmont Club. The club does not provide alcoholic beverages at membership meetings, but members are allowed to bring their own (BYOB) choices of beer or wine. Over-indulgence is not condoned under any circumstances. Cups, ice, and some soft drinks are provided. Thank you.
