More on the Toledo Show on page 4 Parking at the Field I actually had two separate people approach me while we were at the Toledo Show to complain about parking issues at the field. First one was a complaint about all the people parking around the shelter and tearing up the grass. The second complaint was that there were so many cars parked in the loading and unloading areas that they could not even get close to unload their stuff so they just left. April Meeting Minutes 04/04/2013, Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 7:30 PM Field Report : Old Business : The report is that it is looking good. The runway probably won't need any seal coat this year. One of the taxi-ways on each end of the runway has a dip that may need to be filled in. They have a tendency to chip props. Someone has moved the water barrel from the shelter to over near the pin box. No on knows who or why and one of the picnic tables is missing. Again, no one knows who moved it or where it went. There was discussion last year about extending the fence for the heli guys. Jerry Humston had prepared a proposed layout but at the time the ground was too hard and the weather too hot to proceed. Then the season got away from us. The project needs to be looked at again with perhaps more consideration given to event parking, spectator and heli pilot needs, etc. A suggestion was made to form a committee consisting of Joe Saylor, Jerry Humston and a couple of heli guys and get moving on the project before the weather gets hot again. New Business : Bob Clark continues to faithfully mow our field but it is getting hard for him to empty the trash. There was a suggestion that event CDs take care or the trash at the end of their event and that Wednesday evenings become "trash" night with the trainers and all club members in attendance making sure the trash gets emptied before closing down the field for the night. We need some signs stipulating that our field is for "Recreational Use Only". To prevent any possible problems since any type of paid training programs are in violation of AMA rules and also need to be FAA approved. Joe Saylor, Jerry Humston and Paul Stimmel will look into it. $25.00 Gift Certificate Winner: Won by Fred Foskuhl. Treasurer Report: No Treasurer Report for the Month of April Attended by 16 Members and one Guest Show and Tell: Gene Webb displayed a Falcon JR that he scratch built in 1980 and has just recently recovered and is making flight ready again. Ken Eubanks displayed a Hangar 9 British style P51 Mustang ARF that he bought at/traded for during Modelrama. It is electric powered equivalent to a.90-2 stroke and has flaps, retracts, etc. Good looking plane. Frank Baird showed a 40-size scratch built plane that he would like to sell for $75. Another good looking plane. Meeting Closed at approximately 8:50 PM. TAILSPINS Page 2
From the President s Hanger First a quick reminder. May s meeting will be at RC Hobby at 7:30 on May 2 nd. I d like to thank everyone that came out to the field for the cleanup day on Saturday May 20 th. We had about 10+ guys show up bright and early and willing to get to work. The picnic tables and the flight stands were given a good coat of paint, and the shelter cleaned up weeds sprayed rough spots filled with dirt and when the donuts came out Jerry showed up hummmm go figure J ha ha. The layout of the next project has been decided and that is the Chain Link fence for the Helicopter area that was voted on last year to be installed. We ll round up the supplies and a work day will be announced for volunteers. Instructor nights have started so be sure to come out weds nights to help out anyone who wants to learn. Also there will be more night fly's this year on weds nights keep an eye open in the newsletter and on the website for details on those. Everyone fly safe and STAY OUT OF THE TREES!! J See you at the field Joe Saylor President Dayton Wingmasters Parking continued from page 1 I advised both parties that I would try and address the parking issues when I seen people parking in and around these areas. I don t mind that people are approaching me about issues at the field and I would much rather take care of them in house like this than have people start complaining to the City s Parks Department or worse yet calling the Police on issues of parking at the field. According to the City Parks and Recreation rules you are not permitted to drive or park on anything other than a dedicated road in any City Park. The Wingmasters Field does have a dedicated parking lot and we have been getting away with also parking in a line next to the port a pot, although this is a violation of the rules it does free up the area around the shelter and keeps the loading and unloading areas free. I am not pointing fingers or naming names and I myself am guilty of unloading and just leaving my truck in the way. So remember we as Wingmaster Members should set a good example and park where we are supposed to and even give a friendly reminder to some of the people who may just get to excited to start flying and leave their vehicle parked in the wrong spot Jerry TAILSPINS Page 3
2013 Toledo Show Review By: Paul Stimmel From Year of the Dragon to Batman Returns Another trek to Toledo was made this past week, like last year my son Joe asked if he could catch a ride with me. Joe thought it would be a good time to just hang out with dad and he had his eye on buying some hobby tools for his planes. Like last year that meant driving from Dayton to Columbus and then to Toledo. It was a roundabout way to go for sure, but it proved to be a good time to catch up with my son. After attending each event for the past six years, it s become apparent that not a lot has changed. It s still the same vendors, in the same locations, and in many cases the same faces. The only changes you see consistently are the vendor s newest gadgets that will wow us into opening our wallets. For my part that s never been a problem, my wallet is at the point where it just jumps out of my back pocket. If I were to cite any trends at the show, I would have to say that electric continues to grow, more planes and Helicopters are available, everyone is selling motors, Speed Controllers, and there are a number of new chargers out on the market. Speaking of planes, it s absolutely amazing to see the planes now being manufactured in various forms of FOAM. The detail and scale looks have come a long way! I expected to see more quad copters being shown, there were a few out there but I expected more. There are more vendors displaying Giant Scale and fewer are showing 40 and 60 size planes. The vendors posted upstairs continues to get smaller, I was hearing things like if you re looking for junk you need to be upstairs, and there were several rooms with no tables. Here are several pictures of interest from the show: Dave Thacker and Dave Flint were on hand to talk about the all of the great things offered by Radical RC. Dave indicated that he sold a number of his new Wright Flyer. Dave always puts his booth next to the ice cream vendor, hmmmmm? More Pictures on Page 5 TAILSPINS Page 4
2013 Toledo Show As stated earlier, last year we had the turbine powered Flying Dragon, this year we had a really nice reproduction of the Batman Jet. This plane is powered by a turbine power plant, pretty nice detail, but I can assure you I would not want to take it up (nor would the owner want me to take it up). I wonder what kind of glide he gets out of that wing configuration. I bought two of the new Model Aero Polaris Ultra ARF. I got one for myself and one for my good friend Kenny Eubanks. When I returned home, I sent an e-mail to Kenny to explain that I got his plane and one for myself. But I had good news and bad news. The bad news is that his box flew out of my truck and was run over by a motor home and instead of an ARF it was more in a kit form. The good news is that mine was OK. Photo s by: PaulStimmel Field Maintenance Day A good crew showed up on Saturday April 20 th for field day repairs. A lot of work was done to areas where the impact will certainly be noticed. Work included Repairing the shingles on the roof. Painting all the picnic tables, flight stands and two spectator benches. Tiling around the flag pole for plants to be planted at a later date. New foam on the uprights of the flight stands. Killing weeds in the parking lot and under the benches. Joe spent the day cleaning up the pin box and repairing the 24 volt rail. Five tie downs were added along the fence line for large scale planes. Continued on Page 6 TAILSPINS Page 5
