PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Having the recipient of the Jack Cronin scholarship attend our meeting to receive his award was a great way to end off the year. I think for all the people who knew Jack it must have been special to have his son Barry with us to present the award. It is certainly fitting for us as a Club to have an engineering scholarship in Jack's name given the influence he had on the development of the Gold Coast and our Club s history. I have really enjoyed being the president this year and look forward to being part of Southport for many years to come. Thank you all for the support. We now look forward to a new Rotary year with Lambert at the helm and new pictures at the top of the Rotator. Regards, Andrew TREASURER S REPORT Merv Powell NOTE: All members who fail to send in an apology for non-attendance will be charged as per our club policy, which was agreed by all members at previous club assemblies. Scribes Report, Southport Rotary Club Meeting June 25, 2013. Chairperson Bill Connelly opened the meeting with Rotary grace and the loyal toast. Rotarian Marion Jones proposed the International Toast to the Rotary International Convention commencing in Lisbon, Portugal. Marion noted that although our International President did not have the convention in his own country, there had been friendly ties between Japan and Portugal since 1542. President Andrew welcomed visiting Rotarians Beulah Goldman from the Rotary Club of Waterfront, Capetown and Graham Hills from the Rotary Club of Port Moresby, and Southport Rotaracters Troy Lawler and Rachel Hunting. The following visitors were also welcomes: Barry Cronin, Hermione Noar, Paul Larken, Chanel Larken, and Ben Larken. President Andrew also welcomed wives and partners of Southport Rotarians. President Andrew reported that Garry Rickwood was gravely ill, and that Lea had requested no telephone calls. President-Elect Lambert thanked Jenny Hobart for offering to convene the Rotaryannes in the 2013-2014 year. Directors Reports: Don Dinneen still has some Entertainment Books available for $55. PDG Graham Jones reported that the acceptances for the District Changeover on July 06 in Stanthorpe were due by June 30. Michael Irving indicated that the Carousel Roster was complete for the following week. Secretary s Report. Graham Jones reported that there were 26 members and guests, four visiting Rotarians and Rotaracters and 5 guests. President Andrew read a brief CV of Jack Cronin prior to dinner. Sergeant Graham Cooper was in fine form collecting funds. Paul was presented with this award for being the top student in Engineering at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Paul gave an excellent speech in which he firstly thanked the club for the award that recognizes Jack Cronin s leadership in civil engineering on the Gold Coast. He then outlined what attracted him to study engineering and that he would be using funds from the award to study in Germany in his elective semester. President Andrew thanked all for attending, and as it was his last night as Club President, he thanked everyone for their support during this year. Copies to Sue Dux suedux@hotmail.com Thoughts for the week Apparently this is true: On July 20, 1969, as commander of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module, Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. His first words, after stepping onto the moon, that s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind, were televised to Earth and heard by millions. But just before he re-entered the Lander, he made the enigmatic remark, good luck Mr Gorsky. Many people at NASA thought it was a casual remark concerning some rival soviet cosmonaut. However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American space programs. Over the years, many people questioned Armstrong as to what the Gorsky statement meant, but Armstrong always just smiled. On July in 1995, in Tampa Bay Florida, while answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26-year-old question about Mr. Gorsky to Armstrong. This time he finally responded because Mr. Gorsky had died, so Neil Armstrong could now answer the question. Here is the answer to who was Mr. Gorsky. In 1938, when he was a kid in a small mid-western town, he was playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. His friend hit the ball, which landed in his neighbour s yard by their bedroom window. His neighbours were Mr. and Mrs. Gorsky. As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs. Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky. Sex! You want sex?! You ll get sex when the kid next door walks on the moon! Finally! We got our sink fixed. Rotator February 26 7
