Presidents Report Wow, November is here already, two blinks & it will be Christmas! Thanks all those members & partners who helped with the Chinese Lantern Festival. Jen & I were not needed to help with the Bar-B- Q so we spent some time with Rosemary, Barry & Anne on the membership stand and then went round sampling the fare on offer. A most enjoyable evening & the bar-b q team raised a good $ on the night. Next Monday is the Melbourne Cup Night at Springfield, the following Thursday is the vocational visit to Baulkham Hills Tafe Hospitality Centre, which I think is booked out. If you are interested in going check with Col Sharpe as someone may have pulled out. Then on Monday 18 th November we have Nick Farr Jones as a speaker. We have invited members from eight local Rotary clubs plus those people who came to the Business Network Night & a range of friends & colleagues who are keen Union fans. So far we have had a steady trickle of acceptances but can I encourage all members to ask & also follow up those that they have already asked. We were hoping for 70 to 80 attendees but I would settle for 60 & we re not there yet! Book sale- I d like to have an initial meeting of the Book sale committee in November. Tuesday 19 th November has been suggested as a possibility (alt Tuesday 26 th ). If we want to make any changes or improvements it s important that we have time to think & plan. Once we get in to the 6 week period leading up to the sale in March the focus changes from planning to doing>>>>>! Fundraising- we ve fallen a bit short of our targets for the Golf day & Trivia Nights & have agreed to give at least part of the proceeds for the Porsche Day & Chinese lantern Festival to the Bushfire Appeals so we could do with a fundraiser in the last quarter of the year (April to June ) If you have an idea, especially one that does not involve heavy lifting and could be fun, please speak to Jim our (fun)draising director! President Clive Denmark Volume 27 Issue 17 Page 2 of 8 Monday 4 November 2013

Night Report Sergeant Jim Simpson opened the meeting and introduced President Clive Denmark who welcomed the guest speaker for the night Chris Lew, Anne Sharp and members present. Vilde gave a brief rundown on her activities over the last weeks including watching the naval fleet review. Douglas Lam spoke about the Chinese Lantern festival and that the club had raised in excess of $1,000/- which would be donated to the NSW Bush fire funds. He also thanked all members for their hard work and their contribution to the success of the evening. Rosemary thanked the membership team which was working hard behind the scenes making lots of individual contacts though a huge task they were slowly chipping away. Colin Wright spoke briefly about the theatre in the park in Brooklyn on Saturday 9th November and those who are planning to go should get in touch with him at the earliest as there is limited parking available and is exploring the possibility of car-pooling. He also talked about the weekend away a trip to the South Coast approximate cost all inclusive would be $320/- pp. with a minimum requirement of 30 persons. Those interested to get in touch with Colin at the earliest due to limited seating. President Clive Denmark reminded all that next Monday was the Melbourne Cup night and it was a partner s night so members should confirm to David Turnbull in case they wished to bring their partners along. He promised it to be an entertaining evening. Barry Lambert spruiked the Rotary merchandising peak cap for $15/- and Apron for $22/-. He also reminded all about the forthcoming AGM on 2nd December. Colin Sharpe spoke about the TAFE dinner on 14 November and for those who had still not paid to please pay to Ian Roberts at the earliest. Colin then introduced the guest Speaker Chris Lew who also happens to be his neighbour. Chris is a Sports & Active Life Style photographer and has done commissions for many famous Sports companies such as Nike etc. Chris inherited his love of photography from his mum who was a nurse and an artist. In 2005 while he was studying to be an accountant one of Japan s largest photo agency gave a call for sports drink photo shoot and since then Chris has never looked back especially since track & field has always been very dear to his heart. According to Chris success is a bit of good luck but most often it is all about hard work and getting up early and there are no short cuts to that. There were lots of questions later on. Keith Ball won the raffle whilst Stan Baseley won Heads & Tails. Sergeant Jim closed the meeting with this paradoskian Know that I am getting old, my wild oats are turning into prunes and oat bran. PS: Our esteemed guest speaker likened the car sales people to some of the most professional people in the industry next election he gets my vote! H Stein Humour Affair 1 (of 6) A married man was having an affair with his secretary. One day they went to her place and made love all afternoon. Exhausted, they fell asleep and woke up at 8 PM. The man hurriedly dressed and told his lover to take his shoes outside and rub them in the grass and dirt. He put on his shoes and drove home. 'Where have you been?' his wife demanded. 'I can't lie to you,' he replied, 'I'm having an affair with my secretary. We had sex all afternoon.' She looked down at his shoes and said: Volume 27 Issue 17 Page 6 of 8 Monday 4 November 2013
