SUMMER SPORTS Entering grades 1 6* in fall, 2018 *Disc Golf Entering grades 1 8 in fall, 2018 Kids of all skill levels and abilities can choose from a variety of sports to explore this summer in week-long YMCA Summer Sports camps. FRIDAY PLAY DAYS Friday Play Days give participants the opportunity to put their hard work and new skills into action by engaging in friendly competition and scrimmaging against other YMCA locations at the end of each week. FLOOR HOCKEY Weeks of June 4, July 9 and August 13 Kids can improve their stick handling, passing and shooting skills through drills and our hockey curriculum. TRACK AND FIELD Week of June 11 Kids learn the proper techniques of running, pacing, jumping and throwing. BASEBALL/ TBALL/ SOFTBALL Weeks of June 18 and August 6 Participants develop and improve skills: throwing, catching, pitching, hitting and running bases. FIELD TRIP: Week of June 18: Twins Game. 6 SOCCER Weeks of June 11, July 23 and August 27 Kids will work through curriculum focused on ball-control, passing, trapping, shooting and defense. Participants have the option of bringing their own shin guards and cleats. CHEER Weeks of June 18 and July 16 Kids learn the ins and outs of basic and advanced cheer moves. Finish the week participating in a choreographed routine put to music. BASKETBALL Weeks of June 25, July 16 and August 20 Players will progress through the skills of basketball: dribbling, passing, shooting and defensive skills through drills. FIELD TRIP: Week of July 16: Lynx Game. LACROSSE Week of June 25 Our lacrosse instruction is designed to stimulate a kid s love of the game through focus on skills, drills and rules of the game. GOLF Weeks of July 2* and August 6 Kids will practice on a local golf course where young golfers will have an opportunity to improve their driving, chipping and putting. FLAG FOOTBALL Weeks of July 9 and August 13 Kids play every position and learn the basic offense and defense skills including catching, passing and capturing the flag. TENNIS Week of July 30 Participants learn the fundamentals of tennis with trained instructors. Kids are encouraged to bring their own racquet. Tennis balls are provided. VOLLEYBALL Week of July 23 Kids learn about the sport of volleyball including rules, communication skills, serving, setting and passing. Days are filled with field trips, outings to amusement and water parks, and fun group activities that exercise the body, challenge the mind and nurture the spirit of our youth. Participants will gain understanding and learn to properly use them both safely. Campers will learn to make and use their own targets, learn about different types of bows, the basics of aiming and target shooting and try our tomahawk range on Adventure Island. ADVANCED ARCHERY CAMP Weeks of July 9, July 16, July 23 and August 13 Your child will advance their archery skills and build upon skills learned in our archery and slingshot camp. Daily practice and instruction is offered at camp s three archery ranges and off site at South Forty Archers in Lakeville. FISHING CAMP Weeks of June 11 August 24* Camp Streefland is working with the MN DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife to utilize the MinnAqua Program s national award-winning fishing and aquatic education curriculum in our fishing camps. MinnAqua is a statewide education program designed to teach angling recreation and stewardship as well as the ecology and conservation of aquatic habitats. Kids get hooked on fishing as they learn basic fishing skills. Lakes provide the scene for fishing fun using the catch-and-release method. Campers will learn about safety when fishing, how to tie knots, fish identification, which bait to use and how our actions impact nature. Campers can bring their own pole and tackle, or equipment will be provided. 15

Students build confidence in tire grip, working on anticipation and focus points. Your child will learn to shift gears and become a strong rider. Campers develop lifelong biking skills and a commitment to an active lifestyles. Guest instructors and speakers from local bike shops, will help teach your child about basic bike care. Our partnership with Buck Hill will allow campers the opportunity to get the feeling of skiing or riding on synthetic snow. DAY CAMP STREEFLAND HORSE CAMPS For all horse programs, we recommend that participants wear heeled leather shoes or boots. Long pants and protective helmets are required of all participants. Helmets will be provided by the camp. Our horse camp is a recreational riding program and is not intended to replace formal riding lessons. Alternative programs may be planned if weather conditions such as extreme heat, rain, or wind jeopardize the safety of campers or horses. Horse camp participants will be transported by bus from Day Camp Streefland to Day Camp Kici Yapi each day. Sailing Instructors are US Sailing Certified, highly experienced and energetic and teach basic sailing concepts including: wind identification, upwind sailing, navigation and water safety. Participants will begin on land and then sail Lake Minnetonka. Sailors work in teams to manage onboard jobs including rigging, sail trim and steering. DAY CAMP KICI YAPI HORSE CAMPS Come experience the joys of horseback riding at Horse Camp! Day Camp Kici Yapi riding programs are progressively structured to provide campers with a fun experience of interacting with gentle horses. Instructors are trained in horsemanship and carefully match the experience level of the child with an appropriate horse. Safety is our top priority at Horse Camp. For all horse programs, we recommend that participants wear heeled leather shoes or boots. Long pants and protective helmets are required of all participants. Helmets will be provided by the camp. Our horse camp is a progressive recreational riding program and is not intended to replace formal riding lessons. Alternative programs may be planned if weather conditions such as extreme heat, rain or wind jeopardize the safety of campers or horses. Here s your chance to take a leadership role! Junior Counselors are assigned to a group and assist the Senior Counselors in leading and carrying out a variety of Day Camp programs. Junior Counselors help campers acquire feelings of high self-esteem, self-worth and competence in an outdoor setting. Previous experience in the LIT program or working with children is required.
