SDKCA March 2016 Soddy Daisy Knife Collectors Association A Message from the President Hello to SDKCA members and extended friends. Frank Parham (423) 208-8988 fmparham1@gmail.com We have not had a newsletter in several months. We regret this, however Jim Morgan and Kenny Powell have agreed to publish the club's newsletter for us for the foreseeable future. We thank Jim and Kenny for not only accepting this club responsibility but being a valuable part of the life and activities the SDKCA for many years. The SDKCA needs a good used laptop with Windows seven. If someone has one they will donate; please let us know. Upcoming Knife Shows The club will have a knife auction at our April meeting. We will announce more about this at our March meeting and in the next newsletter. This will be a fun event for those who participate and will be a good opportunity for you to sell a knife or buy one at a bargain. Look for more details to follow and bring a guest with you. It is unfortunate that the Spirit of Steel Dalton Knife Show had to be canceled. This has been a good event for our club and is close enough that we can easily drive to it. This knife show has always been held in March and hopefully will be held again in 2017. The club voted to attend Bruce Voyle's knife show in Pigeon Forge on May 13,14 and 15. Bruce is scheduled to have a second Pigeon Forge show in October. We will let you know more details about this closer to the show date. Thank you to everyone who is involved with the SDKCA. We had a good 2015 and look forward to the remainder of 2016. We would like to schedule some club activities during the remainder of this year. If you have an idea about a club event or activity let us know. Best wishes and look forward to seeing you at the next club meeting Frank May 13,14,15 Spirit of Steel in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee at the Smokey Mountain Convention Center. The Remington Pocketknife Numbering System Most Remington knives have pattern numbers stamped on the reverse side of the master blade. The pattern number usually consists of the letter R and between two to four digits. The letter R indicates that it is a folding knife. The last digit will indicate the handle material, and the numbers in the middle indicate the pattern. Handle Materials: 1: Redwood 6. Stag 2. Black composition 7. Ivory or white bone 3. Bone 8. Cocobolo wood 4. Pearl 9. Metal 5. Pyremite or celluloid 10. Buffalo horn The pattern numbers up to R2999 indicate jack knives., the numbers from R6000 to R9999 are used for pen knives, other knives will be numbered from R3000 to R5999. Like most knife companies Remington sometimes deviated from the standard. For example, some of their Barlow s were stamped with a B after the R and knives that had a chain attached had a CH following the pattern number. But in most cases the basic rules will hold. No Cussing W.R. Case and Sons made a No Cussing straight razor (ca. 1905-1906) for the John Redman Boyd Company of Corpus Christi, Texas. It had a Case tang stamp and a No Cussing blade etch. If you have ever tried to shave with a straight razor you probably know why someone might be tempted to use a bad word.
