Retailer Spotlight: Norwood Tavern, Marietta Mary Eddy used to tell people who asked, We re in bars and cars. Mary and her late husband Roger Eddy owned a car lot, and as customers, enjoyed Norwood Tavern in Marietta. When the owner decided to sell, they purchased the business. It was 1995. That s what he wanted to do, said Mary. Roger would arrive at the bar in the morning to serve workers coming off third shift, and Mary would start around noon, with their employees sharing evening and weekend shifts. They eventually sold the car lot. A favorite neighborhood bar, Norwood Tavern now opens at 9 a.m., with Mary regularly greeting The Breakfast Club, a group of retirees who make Norwood Tavern their meeting place. Mary hosts an annual golf outing on behalf of Norwood Tavern and occasional fundraisers for people in need. She s active on the board of the Humane Society and would like the tavern to host even more fundraising events this year. There s always people there, morning, noon and night. Everyone s friends there, says sales representative Tim Glover. She s a great woman. Lots of fun. Mary s customers enjoy playing Keno, making Norwood Tavern the top-selling bar in Tim s district. She estimates that 50-60% of her customers play Keno. Norwood Tavern uses MP vending for Keno and draw games, and sells Quick Keno and Touch & Win games out of another vending machine. She estimates about 95% of Lottery sales come from vending. The Lucky One, the Ohio Lottery s new monitor game, is starting to catch on too. Kenotes! Spring 2018
People are starting to understand it better and we re starting to explain it better, she says. One change the tavern has had to make is carrying quarters to pay out odd/even and low/high wagers. All in all, she is positive about the new game. She enjoys working with Tim, who helps her manage on-site promotions. She s a member of the Retailer Incentive Program and has already seen the program s benefit. I was surprised at the type of income that could be made on Lottery, she says. It pays my utilities. Best practices at Norwood Tavern Strong cashing location Member of the Retailer Incentive Program Holds periodic promotions Has longtime employees More on The Lucky One People are realizing that if you double up your bet (for the Lucky Number wager) you ll win $48, says Norwood Tavern owner, Mary Eddy. 7
