Arizona Roadrunners Chapter Newsletter January 2018 ARIZONA ROADRUNNER OFFICERS: President: Don Minton COMMITTEES: Vice President: Tom Botchie Newsletter: Jane Botchie Treasurer: Shari Minton Luncheons: Jane Botchie Secretary: Open Sunshine: Open Webmaster: Shari Minton Membership: Don Minton Wagonmaster: Diane Lemley/Charles Lemley PRESIDENT S MESSAGE: On the road back home from Amado, I couldn t help but smile about our first campout of the 2017/18 muster schedule. Wagon Master, Diane, has been organizing our musters going on 5 years now. That s 2 or 3 musters each year and yet each one has been at a different location with different, distinct activities. They have all been fun, interesting, and educational. Diane you are the BEST. The chapter meeting covered a variety of issues: First, recruitment - we are still losing members faster than we are gaining them. This is certainly true of our Roadrunner club (9 couples and 2 singles). We all need to work on recruiting new members. Ski and I set up a member recruitment table at the October Allegro Rally in Salem, Oregon and hope to do the same in Tucson at the February Rally. If any of you would like to join us at the table, let me know - the more, the merrier. Second, the membership voted to send our annual charity donation of $200 to Davis Mothan AFB. Third, after 3 years of waiving the collection of the annual membership dues, it was decided that we would collect chapter dues for 2018. And finally, the club selected one of our members to participate in the Retired Showgirl Review at the SW Regional in Las Vegas. If you want more info about the identity of our Gal, you ll just have to plan to attend the Regional. Diane and Jane will be dressers for our Showgirl with Tamiko as back-up. Sounds like we will be having a great year. Hope to see you at our luncheon on January 13 and/or the January Quartzsite Muster. Shari and I wish each and all of our Roadrunner Family a happy and HEALTHY New Year. Don

It began with happy hour as we caught up on each other's previous travels and watched the sunset. It was a beautiful night. The next morning after our chapter meeting, we went to a Titan missile site for a tour of the silo and the museum! What an unusual experience! Titan Missile Tour Native American Dancers at Tumacacori Our Nov/Dec Traveling Group Diane Grinding Corn at Heritage Festival That evening we had dinner in Tubac, an artist community. We walked through town enjoying the luminarias and the crafts from the various Artists while listening to Christmas carols being sung as we enjoyed hot chocolate, popcorn and the beauty of the community. The next morning we caravanned to Tumacacori Mission where we
participated in their Heritage Festival, with over 50 booths of artists and food, and enjoyed the performances of various groups throughout the day. We toured the Mission and learned the history of the area. That evening we had a potluck dinner where we laughed and caught up on each other's lives. Jim Greer was the happy winner of $42 in the 50/50 raffle. Sunday we attended Mass at the mission in 4 languages: English, Spanish, and two Native American languages. Bishop Kicanas presided over this Mass. Then we went to lunch, said good bye and departed for home our separate ways. What memories!!! ************************************************************************ Our Christmas Luncheon 2018: Submitted by Jane Botchie Our annual Arizona Roadrunners Christmas Luncheon was held on Tuesday, December 12 th, at Inca's Peruvian Restaurant on the northeast side of Tucson. Inca's is a small, intimate restaurant serving unique, authentic, and delicious Peruvian food using spices and ingredients imported directly from Peru. The food was marvelous and all members who attended had a very festive time. Unfortunately, as Luncheon Coordinator, I forgot to take a photo of our group of 12! However, below is a wonderful photo of Don and Ski presenting our annual club donation of $200 to Davis-Monthan AFB officials on Dec 14 th. The money was used to help 4 military families who were struggling during the holiday season. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Lady Roadrunners Summer Luncheon: Submitted by Jane Botchie This past June, those Lady Roadrunners still remaining in the summer heat, met for lunch at The Red Lobster on the west side of Tucson. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable time. Perhaps, this coming summer, we'll try to get together again!!

Here it is: Freeways and shopping centers sprawl where the cattle once ran, all the way from Nogales to Cortaro. And on those cattle rode the brand "MA," for Manuel Amado, patriarch of a family whose roots run deep in Southern Arizona. The name lives on through the settlement of Amado, off Interstate 19 south of Green Valley. And it lives on in Amado's many descendants, including his great-grandson Henry Amado, who still ranches in Southern Arizona. From Spain and Mexico the family moved north, settling about 1850 into Southern Arizona, then part of Mexico. In 1852, Manuel Amado began ranching south of Tucson between the Canoa and Otero Spanish land grants. With no fences, his cattle roamed from the border to north of Tucson. "It was all open range," says Henry Amado, 73, who runs his office, Amado & Associates CPAs, with his son, Greg, on East Camp Lowell Drive not far from where his great-grandfather once supplied the grain for Fort Lowell horses.
For a time the family also ranched near Mission San Xavier del Bac where they ran a dairy. But after what is now the Tohono O'odham Reservation at San Xavier was established in 1874, the Amados were eventually forced out. In the August 1955 issue of Arizona Cattlelog, Manuel's son, Antonio Amado, recounted how, as a 6-year-old in 1880, he was on an errand in Tucson when he saw dense, billowing smoke to the south. Government agents had set fire to the family's ranch. And so they retreated to what would become Amado, on their ranch called El Alamo Bonito, Beautiful Cottonwood. The railroad opened a station nearby in 1910. In 1919 the Amadoville post office was established. A year later, the name was changed to Amado. This is where the stockyards stood, as well as several stores, a train depot, and a pool hall. Today, the area, bisected by I-19, is known mainly for the Cow Palace restaurant. In 1904, Manuel Amado died and his property, including several ranches in the Amado area, was divided among his six surviving children and still remains in the family today. I would like to thank everyone for their patience while I was delayed in preparing and emailing our club newsletter. A very special thank you goes to Diane Lemley for writing and sending out the December newsletter while Tom and I were traveling. Jane Botchie
