Spending Money You will need to bring something for Breakfast/Lunch on Tuesday or money to buy something at the airport We will need to buy dinner on Wednesday, lunch and dinner on Thursday and lunch and dinner on Friday, plus drinks, snacks, ice creams etc. Public transport costs have been included in the trip cost and will be provided. About 110 worth of Swiss Francs should cover the basics of the trip. (About 150CHF) Students must have cash as we might not have access to a cash machine until the second day.
Passports/ European Health Insurance Card Visitors to Switzerland will need a current passport. Participants will need to have their passport while we are at CERN itself, as part of the site is in Switzerland, part in France. The Swiss accept the European Health Insurance Card. Participants will need to bring one of these, an EHIC can be applied for online via www.nhs.uk/ehic The card takes up to seven days to be delivered, so could anyone who has not applied for the card yet do so urgently. We can not let students join the party without the card.
Travel Insurance Travel Insurance is needed, to supplement the protection offered by the EHIC, (which does not cover, for example, a flight home in an emergency). The College has taken out its own Travel Insurance to cover this and other risks.
Transport We will travel to and from Manchester Airport with Coastal Coaches Public transport will be used around Geneva. Travel cards will be provided.
Behaviour During the visit to CERN itself, and en route to and from the hotel, we expect students to remain as a party. There may be opportunities at other times for students to spend some time in Geneva independently of the group Students must not wander alone during the free time. They must stay in groups of at least three. We expect students to conduct themselves responsibly during this time: they are representing their College. No alcohol to be consumed at any time The trip will be entirely non-smoking
Clothing / Equipment Besides the stipulation regarding footwear mentioned earlier, there is no need for specialised or formal clothing. The weather is generally warm in June, but thunderstorms are common so both sun cream and a waterproof will be required. Pack a bag that you can carry for several hours. A rucksack is best.
