STATISTICAL OFFICE PRESS RELEASE No: 68 Podgorica, 22 July 2010 CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE 2010 FOR AGRICULTURAL HOLDINGS Statistical Office of Montenegro Monstat conducted the Census of Agriculture, the first one in Montenegro after 50 years, from 7 to 21 June 2010. Monstat is publishing the first results from the Census of Agriculture 2010 for family agricultural holdings and comparative review with the data from the Census of Population, Households and Dwellings 2003. METHODOLOGICAL EXPLANATIONS, CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE 2010 INTRODUCTION The Census of Agriculture was conducted from 7 to 21 June 2010 in accordance with the Law on Census of Agriculture 2010 (published in the Official Gazette of Montenegro 54/09, and 14/10). The enumeration of family agricultural holdings was conducted by the interview door-to-door method. The data were collected by the enumerators selected by the Agency for Selection and Payment (ASA Institut the contractor from Cologne, German and Montenegrin Company Praxis Montenegro), and trained by the Statistical Office of Montenegro Monstat who prepared methodology and questionnaires. Business subjects were enumerated by the postal method. The data on business subjects shall be published later. The methodology is harmonised with the Regulation (EC) No 1166/2008; Handbook on implementing the FSS and SAPM definitions. From 25 June to 5 July 2010 Statistical Office of Montenegro Monstat conducted the post enumeration survey Quality and Coverage Control of Agricultural Census. The methodology for the quality data control from the Census of Agriculture was drafted by Mr. Bruno Massoli under the Midas project. The results from the post enumeration survey showed that the Census was conducted in accordance with the methodology and that deviations in coverage and data quality collected by the census and post enumeration survey are statistically insignificant, i.e. they are within the satisfying deviation intervals. BASIC DEFINITIONS Family agricultural holding is a holding using at least 1,000 m 2 of agricultural land or less than 1,000 m 2 and possesses: 1 cow and 1 calf or 1 cow and 1 heifer or 1 cow and 2 adult small stock heads or 5 adult sheep or goats or 3 adult pigs or 4 adult heads of sheep, goats or pigs together or 50 heads of adult poultry or 20 beehives). Also, households with agricultural production and which do not fulfil the above mentioned conditions for agricultural holding, if agricultural production is the only source of incomes for those households. Households not fulfilling the above mentioned conditions, but they cultivate mushrooms in buildings specially erected for growing mushrooms. Total available land is an area of land (total, agricultural utilised, agricultural not utilised, wooded and infertile) is entered in ha and m² measures for every household owning the land no matter if it is utilised or not, and if this household has holding. Total available land is the sum of the area of land owned, land taken in tenure reduced for the areas rented out (given in tenure). Total utilised agricultural land is an utilised agricultural area (kitchen gardens, arable land including fallow land, vineyards, orchards, nurseries, meadows and pastures). The total utilised agricultural land is the sum of agricultural area owned; agricultural land rented from someone else less agricultural areas given for tenure. Total unutilised agricultural land is an area previously used as an agricultural area and, during the reference year no longer worked for economic, social or other reasons and which is not used in the crop rotation system, and area overgrowing are entered under this heading. The total unutilised agricultural land is the sum of unutilised agricultural land owned, unutilised agricultural land taken in tenure less unutilised agricultural areas given in tenure.
