June 25, 2004 Paving the road to a safe construction season Summer is here and that means a lot of construction is underway on Alberta's provincial highway network. This year Alberta Transportation will spend roughly $745 million on the province's highway network. Over the next three years, 20 interchanges and 12 bridges will be constructed and almost 3000 kilometres of road will be paved or rehabilitated. "With the significant amount of work being done, those travelling Alberta's highways this summer will most likely come across a road construction zone," said Transportation Minister Ed Stelmach. "For the safety of the road crews, motorists are asked to slow down and obey all signs and flag people. "Even when there are no workers in construction zones, be cautious because road hazards may still be present. For example, guard rails or signs warning of road conditions may not be in place," Stelmach said. In addition to road construction, about 30 chip seal projects will be completed this summer. Chip seal coating involves applying layers of gravel chips and special asphalt to pavement. Chip seal coating prolongs the life of a highway and provides better traction in poor weather. Alberta has about 30,000 kilometres of provincial highways. Since 1995, highway design, construction and maintenance have been outsourced to Alberta Transportation's partners, members of the Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association and the Consulting Engineers of Alberta. Throughout summer, Alberta Transportation will issue Travellers' Advisories to keep motorists informed about construction delays or detours. The Alberta Motor Association's web site at www.ama.ab.ca also contains information about delays, detours, and road conditions. - 30 - Revised: This news release was amended on June 25, 2004. Editors please note: Although these projects have been announced, a list of this season's major construction and chip seal coating projects is attached.
