ABOUT THE CCE SERVICE SHUTTLE The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) coordinates shuttle service to provide regular transportation for students volunteering throughout the semester in the Greater Richmond community. Daily routes and schedules for the two 11- passenger vans are created at the beginning of each semester based on community partners needs, student requests, and availability. Seats on the shuttle are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The shuttle serves more than twenty-five partner sites and about 100 students a week. For these reasons, seats on the shuttle cannot be guaranteed for all CCE volunteers. Follow the steps below to maximize your chances of riding the shuttle. For more information about riding the CCE service shuttle, including departure location on the UR campus, read the CCE SERVICE SHUTTLE GUIDELINES on pgs. 11-12. PLEASE NOTE: Before riding the CCE service shuttle, you must complete the Informed Consent and Emergency Contact Form in BannerWeb. For more instructions on completing the form, see our help page. You must register for the CCE Service Shuttle by Friday, 12:00 noon, of the week before you intend to start riding the shuttle. The last day for students to register for the shuttle in fall 2010 is Wednesday, September 15 th at 11:00pm. Students asking to be added to the shuttle or moved to a different shuttle slot after this date may be asked to fill out a CCE Service Shuttle Petition. The CCE Service Shuttle will leave without you if you are not there within five minutes of the scheduled campus departure time. Be on time for return pick-up at the service site. If you are late meeting the shuttle at your pick-up site three times, you may be dropped from the shuttle schedule. Remember, lateness affects other riders, making them late to classes, jobs, and meetings. CCE Service Shuttle (Last updated 10/1/2010) 2

HOW TO SELECT AND REGISTER FOR A ROUTE 1. Find the shuttle route that serves your chosen partner organization. Organization names are listed under each route heading. The CCE Service Shuttle serves more than twenty-five partner organizations. The days and times you can reach a particular partner on the shuttle vary widely. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are registering for a shuttle that gets you to your partner organization at the time you are registered to be there. 2. Once you locate the correct route, consider the following while reviewing shuttle times: Times you have available. When can you actually leave campus? When do you need to be back on campus? Times the partner organization you are interested in needs volunteers; these are listed on each organization s information page. 3. Make sure you are selecting both an outbound AND an inbound shuttle. Keep in mind that you will arrive at your partner organization about 30 minutes after the outbound time listed. Expect to be picked up by an inbound shuttle about 30 minutes before the time listed. 4. Contact Debbie Collins with your shuttle selections. You must register for the CCE service shuttle with Debbie by Friday, 12:00 noon, of the week before you intend to start riding the shuttle. The last day for students to register for the shuttle in Fall 2010 is Wednesday, September 15 th at 11:00pm. When you contact Debbie, please include: Your name Your cell phone number The name of the partner organization you are taking the shuttle to Your request for a seat on the shuttle on the route, day(s), and time(s) of your choosing. For example: I am requesting a seat on the Northside route, Tuesdays, outbound 8:30 am, inbound 11:00 am. Debbie will email you confirmation if a seat is available at the times you request. If the shuttle is already full, she will ask you to identify another time and/or another partner organization. 5. If you are volunteering with a partner organization that is part of a CCE program, you may now complete your online registration for your partner organization (if you have not done so already). This includes: Boaz and Ruth, College Mentoring Project, Daily Planet Medical Respite, Henderson Middle School, Overby-Sheppard Elementary School, Peter Paul Development Center, Rubicon, St. Joseph s Villa, William Byrd Community House, Voices for Virginia s Children, and Youth Life Foundation of Richmond. 6. Complete the required Informed Consent and Emergency Contact Form. Be prepared! Be responsible! Remember: You cannot start service at a partner organization or ride the CCE service shuttle until you have reviewed the Safety and Liability Guidelines and completed the Informed Consent and Emergency Contact Form in BannerWeb. For more instructions on completing the form, see the CCE help page. CCE Service Shuttle (Last updated 10/1/2010) 3

CCE SERVICE SHUTTLE GUIDELINES The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) operates two 11-passenger vans to enable students to get to and from off-campus service opportunities in a timely, reliable, and safe manner. In order for the shuttle services to be timely and reliable, we follow our daily schedule of departures/return pick-ups as closely as possible. Punctuality: Be on time for departure from campus. The shuttle will leave without you if you are not there within five minutes of the scheduled campus departure time. Be on time for return pick-up at the service site. If you are late meeting the shuttle at your pick-up site three times, you may be dropped from the shuttle schedule. Tardiness affects the schedule of other riders, making them late to classes, jobs, and meetings. The van driver will do everything reasonable to ensure on-time operations. Consistency: The CCE shuttles operate on a three-strikes-and-you re-out policy. Students who are late three times to the shuttle upon pickup from the service site may be barred from riding the shuttle for the rest of the semester. Students who miss three weeks (consecutive or non-consecutive) of service at their organization may be asked to stop service at that organization for the rest of the semester. Ride the shuttle only on your designated days and times. Drivers can t accommodate riders who show up unexpected and unannounced. Although there may be enough room on the shuttle to take you out to your service organization, there may not be enough room on the shuttle on the return trip. Notification: Contact Debbie Collins at to register for the shuttle and to communicate schedule changes. If you can t reach Debbie, contact Dick Moschler or Bob Mullin at 804-873-4664, Dave Cosby at 804-787-3893, or Warren Farrar at 804-938-5007. All four drivers have a cell on board. If a few minutes late (>5 minutes) for pick-up, call the van driver s cell ASAP. Unexpected Events Happen to All of Us: Riders: please notify Debbie Collins (804-484-1630) as soon as you are aware of an event preventing you from riding the shuttle as scheduled. Van driver will communicate via cell with Debbie Collins in the CCE in the event of traffic delays. Debbie Collins will share this information with waiting riders. Departures and Return Drop-offs: Meet the van at the bottom of the steps in the parking lot behind the Commons building (between the Commons and the smoke stack). The van schedule will not allow for unscheduled stops. Riders must return to campus on the shuttle unless they have previously notified the driver that they will be using alternative return transportation. CCE Service Shuttle (Last updated 10/1/2010) 11

Safety: Safe van operation is a primary concern drivers will not speed in order to meet schedules. Be aware that traffic flow and accidents may affect timeliness. Use of seat belts is mandatory. Riders must stay seated until van comes to a complete stop. No Service: Inclement weather: The CCE will decide whether to make runs in inclement weather and Debbie Collins will notify students of the decision via cell/e-mail. As a general rule, CCE vans will follow the Richmond Public Schools guidelines for inclement weather. Van breakdown or driver illness cell/e-mail notification Executive decision cell/e-mail notification Exam Periods no off-campus services that create study distractions University Officially Closed typically weather or emergency conditions University Holidays All involved with this service must realize that we represent the University of Richmond when going off-campus, and we must strive to conduct ourselves courteously and professionally.
