Notes for WILLIAM BASKINS: [munns1.ftw] [Baskin.FTW] Additional information on the family of WILLIAM BASKINS. On July 29, 1756 the Indians attacked the family of William Baskins on Duncan's Island (now Perry Co.), PA. William was killed and his wife, Mary, as well as his daugher Margaret (age 7) and a 3 year old son were captured. The wife was released in 1759 and Margaret in 1765. Apparently the boy was taken by a different tribe of Indians and was carried to the Detroit area where he was ransomed by a British officer or trader. He 1

was raised by Sir William Johnson. Since the boy's name was not known, he was baptised by a missionary and was named Timothy Murphy. He was afterwards discovered by Alexander Stephens (husband of the boy's cousin, Catherine Baskins), of Juniata Twp., Perry Co., PA by some peculiar mark on his head. He came back and visited with the Baskins famuily several years later, but was raised in Canada. Note: This information was printed in several sources, i.e., The Pennsylvania Gazette, Rupp's 1846 History, the family Bible of James Smith and the book "The Baskins Family" by Raymond Martin Bell of Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, PA. iii. Nehemiah's younger brother Jeremiah also settled in Orange Co., Hillsboro Dist.(Fatherin-law George Laws mentioned him in his will dated 12 Jan 1798 will book 4 page 20). 3. Deed Book GG p 23 records land transfer of 150 acres from William Casey of Greene Co. to Geo. Cabaniss of Wilkes Co--land taken from that in original grant to nehemiah Edge 9/18/1790 6. Was guardian and bondsman for minor brother Jeremiah Edge, orphan, when bound as apprentice to George Moore, blacksmith, in 1764, per Judicial Record, 1763-1767, page 158, Superior Court, Maryland. 8. Was listed in Baldwin Co., Ga records in 1814 as exempt from poll tax being of age, but he almost certainly died in 1812, so this is probably administration error caused by automatic exemption without knowledge of death. 9. Their sons, William Henry and Warren Lee served in the Confederate Army. William Henry served in the 11th Bn. Sumter Flying Artillery under Major Allen S. Cutts along with his brother-in-law, Wm. W. Notes for ELIZABETH HAYDEN TAYLOR: THE HAYDENS AND THEIR NAME The name of Hayden is said to have derived from the town of Heydon, in the county of Norfolk, where the family made it's home at an extremely early date. It is found on ancient records in the various forms of Heydon, Hayden, Haiden, Heiden, Heyton, Haydens, and Hayden, of which the last is the most generally accepted form of the name today. The family is claimed by some authorities to have been of Norman extraction but this is not certain. One of the earliest records of the family was of Thomas de Heydon, who was living at Heydon Hall and Manor in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. He was justice itinerant of the county of Norfolk and was succeeded by his eldest son William, who was the father of William de Heydon, his heir, and Judge John de Heydon of Devonshire, the last of whom was the ancestor of the noted Devonshire branch of the family. William, eldest son and heir of William, died about 1307 and was succeeded by his eldest son Simeon, who was the father of David, his heir, and Sir Richard Heydon, who was killed in the wars with France about 1370 and was the ancestor of the Hertfordshire line of the Heydons or Haydens. David, eldest son of Simeon, had issue by his wife Margarette of a son Hugh, who married Alice Loverds and had, among others, William, who married Isabel Moore and was succeeded by his eldest son Robert, who married Cecily Culton and had William, who married Jane Warren and made his home at Baconsthorp, near the ancestral seat in Norfolk County. He married Eleanor Winter and had an only son Henry. 21. ii. MARGARET ANN TAYLOR, b. February 25, 1958, Greenville, SC. 18.
