HOLDFAST MODEL AERO CLUB The building bug has bit again. There I was, sitting in my shed/workshop/ hangar pondering what my next project should be. Looking around I could see a pile of balsa and some plywood (assorted sizes), a box with numerous offcuts from previous builds, foam wing cores that were never used and rolls of covering. Hmm, there was enough raw material here to build something. What about power and electrics? Fossicking through my parts bin I found a brushless outrunner electric motor with aluminium standoffs, 60 Amp speed controller, on-off switch, servos, 6 channel receiver, 3700 ma li-po battery, aluminium undercarriage with wheels and spats, and even a tail wheel assembly. Wow, this is all I need to make something. What to build? I had a few plans of warbirds and sports models, but this one was going to be different. Eventually I decided on a 1930ish era vintage aircraft style. Checking the internet gave me a few ideas which formed the basis of my roughly drawn plan and calculations. I set myself a challenge to build something without the usual comprehensive plan, and definitely no instructions to go by. Will it fly? Wait and see! Ok, tool time. Set up the mini-saw and cut out the doublers, formers and firewall. Not as neat as laser or CNC cut but acceptable after a bit of sanding. Glue doublers to fuselage sides, making sure there was a left side and a right side (only once did I make two of the same; that mistake hasn t been repeated since). Next task was gluing the formers in place, followed by the firewall. Oops, the firewall ended up too small, so I cut another and glued that. The foam wing halves were sheeted and joined, then leading edges, trailing edges and wing tips added. Aileron recesses cut out and reinforced, ailerons made. Make a mental note I still need to cut out and reinforce holes for the servo installations. Back to the fuselage; plywood hard points were made for the wing attachment, main undercarriage and tail wheel mounts. Similarly, ply was used for the battery tray, speed controller and servo mounts. Tail feathers next. Tailplane and elevator were made of sheet balsa, while the fin and rudder were built up units. Control rods were made from wood dowel with wire ends (one end threaded the other a zed bend). Time to check the wing s angle of incidence. Out with the incidence meter; I set up the main wing at +2 0, the tailplane at 0 0. Hopefully this would work. Next task is to make a removable top hatch to facilitate battery installation and removal. Out with the pencil and graph paper to draw up a workable solution. After that I need to make a cowling for the front end more fiddly work. Building without formal plans or instructions certainly is a challenging but worthwhile exercise. I expect the model will fly without too much tweaking. However, my main problem will be where to store it in the hangar I m fast running out of room. Port Lincoln Model Aero Club Saturday the 13th of June with fine weather and light winds 18 members attended our field at Coomunga for some excellent flying followed by our Annual General Meeting, BBQ lunch and more flying well into the afternoon. Our two Ceduna members Graeme Hunter and Ron Martin travelled down to the meeting and enjoyed the excellent flying weather. President Dave Newcombe treated us to a thrilling maiden flight with his turbine powered L39 Albatros, followed later by Mick Sharman with his turbine powered Falcon 120, we now have two turbines in our club. We welcome two new members in Tony Mallard and James Rudland who have almost completed their training for bronze wings. In August Public display days. May 2015 saw five of our members head over to the South Hummocks club for the OS funfly. Congratulations to the South Hummocks members for an excellent and well organised weekend, we were all looked after very well. The weather was excellent and to top it off two of our members Flying demonstration at the Cleve Field day August 2014 2014 the PLMAC organised a very successful flying and static display at the Eyre Peninsula Field Days at Cleve. We flew two displays on each of the three days of the field days Field Day Demonstration with Mick Sharman and Graeme Hunter preparing for their next flight in very cold weather and with strong winds that most of the General Public would have thought impossible for model aircraft. Mick s turbine Falcon 120 could be seen and heard from all over the 20 hectare field day site. In October 2014 we held our annual Public Display which was well attended by the General Public and visiting pilots. Over the Easter weekend six of our members travelled to Moonta for their clubs Public display. April 2015 saw our Double D racing team compete again at the Golden Era Pylon races. Dave Newcombe and Dave Porter did well receiving the MASA encouragement award and Dave Newcombe coming 2nd in the Radial class. Three of us old blokes also attended this spectacular event to support our competitors and brave the cold weather helping with the pylon lights over the three Home away fro home at the recent SHMAC OS Day went home better off, namely Ron Martin with a model jet for travelling the furtherest, and yours truly with an OS GT 22 petrol motor. Finally we would welcome any travelling aeromodelers who happen to visit Port Lincoln to contact us and come and visit or fly with us. Our website is www.plmac. info for our location and contact details. Ron Grosser 3

South Australian Old Timers Association The SA group of SAM 1993 had very good results at the recent SA/VIC State Champs held 2 nd and 3 rd May 2015 at Cohuna, Victoria. Out of the 5 events, SA won 4 of them, losing out in Texaco to Brian Laughton from Vic however Dave Markwell (SA) managed 2 nd place in this event. perfectly after all this time.a model flown by Max Newcombe in Texaco I found very interesting was the Inspirer built by the late Max Starick, who started Old Timer R/C assist flying in SA about 1976. Max had a Brown Junior spark engine fotted, the model being one of his last built before his death. Max Newcombe fitted an Enya 60 four stroke and it flew very well in the event (see photo) The original design by Francis Flush (USA) was published in October 1937, Air Trails magazine, shows just how good were the old F/F designs. Max Newcombe won Duration with a model built by the late Ron Adamson, 90% Lanzo Bomber with a McCoy 60 series 20 glo, the engine dates back to 1949 and is a real classic, even being used in the early multi models (reeds) about 1960. The great yellow Chinese silk covering seen in the photo. Duration 2 nd Robert Taylor 1 st Max Newcombe 3 rd Lyn Clifford The weather was fine, cool and calm over the weekend, making for some excellent flying. The Saturday morning started with 1/2A Texaco, a simple contest using the old Cox.049 reed valve engined that are still available today, now being produced in Canada. It was a clean sweep for SA with Chris Britcher 1 st, Dave Markwell 2 nd and Bill Britcher 3 rd. All used Stardust special models, a light weight pylon designfrom 1940. 38 Antique Max Newcombe with Inspirer built by the late Max Straich Last event was 38 Antique and Bill Britcher is the expert with his Lanzo R/C 1 powered with an Atwood Triumph 49/51 spark engine from 1948. The R/C 1 model took the first three places, with Brain Laughton 2 nd using an OK Super 60 spark engine. The 3 rd place was Lyn Clifford from the Cohuna club, who was also using an Atwood Triumph 49 spark engine. Don Howie ½ A 2 nd Dave Markwell 1 st Chris Britcher 3 rd Brain Laughton Next competition was the Gordon Burford 2.5 cc diesel event for these great Australian engines, the most popular model being the 1958/59 red head, plain bearing diesel that is currently being made by David Owen in NSW, with productionbeing sold in advance. In 1 st place again was Chris Britcher (see photos) with Dave Markwell in 2 nd place. The SA flyers use the 1956 Crescendo design that won the World FAI Champs for Ron Draper (UK) in 1956. In Texaco, Brian Laughton was using the old OS open rocker 4 stroke, introduced in the late 1970 s, they still run 4
