Rotorua Ramblings March,2017 To open Branch website, click: www.ulyssesrotorua.org.nz EDITORIAL Only three weeks before the Masterton AGM!!! The above two are just a reminder that there is still time to register to join your fellow Ulyssians in Masterton. Do it NOW!!! At the moment I have a lot on my plate and it is only through the help of my fellow Ulyssians that I am able to get this Newsletter out on time thank you guys. Next month (30 April) is our Rotorua Branch AGM. Please make an effort to attend and raise any issues you have be it Branch or National level. Tony B. #2436 ROTORUA BRANCH MEETING Sunday 26 March 7pm at St John Rooms COORDINATOR S CLAPTRAP PRESIDENT S PALAVER For those of you who haven t heard of my Suzuki problems, it was put in to Paterson O Connor for a service. I had noticed a click noise when I accelerated away from stop, and asked them to check it out. I had presumed it was a suspect chain link or tooth that was worn. The noise happened in accordance with the road speed, not engine speed. When I went in to check on progress, I was shown that the rear wheel had approximately 30mm play each way, 60mmin all. The bearings for the swing arm had worn that much! I was grateful in one sense. I had noticed that when I cornered, I didn t feel right, and presumed my age had something to do with that, so thought just watch yourself, Gordon. Now it turns out that when accelerating from a start, or cornering, the chain tension was pulling the rear wheel well out of alignment, nothing at all to do with growing old disgracefully! The deterioration of the bearings is a gradual thing, and I had not noticed anything apart from the clicking noise. Now, when I do get my Suzuki back, I am sure I will notice the improvement immediately riding satisfaction coefficient will increase back to normal. Pam is getting on with the Gnome outfits, and hopefully we will have a sample for modelling at the meeting. All getting into party mode, are we? Our own branch AGM follow the national one. Please get your names in a month before the April meeting. New blood is essential to the betterment of the Club! Then we have Okataina the registrations are again very slow at coming in, and again we hope that numbers do get to the level that make a special event. Don t forget our theme is 21 st, so dream back to your time at that age, and get out the pink socks and short skirts! You women think of what you wore then too! After Okataina, there is the Swap Meet parking duties on the 9 th July. Put the woollies, gloves, and beanies at the ready. See you all on Sunday night. Cheers, Flash 1

Registration Form on Branch website or email; bruce.quedley@vodafone.co.nz Wednesday 15 th March Dinner Oh, the ignominy of it all no bike, had to go to the mid-week BBQ dinner in Pukehina by car! I did leave a little late, but caught up to 3 bikes, a trike, and Smokey and Andrea just after Paengaroa they were in a car as well - thankfully. There was Bruce and Christine, Hartley, new member Ron, and a mate of his, making up the 2 and 3-wheel brigade. The destination was Smokey s brother Ross & Jenny s home on Pukehina Parade. Magnificent view of the beach, but no takers for a dip. The BBQ was charged up, and the 10 of us sat at the deck tables like there were no problems at all with the world. If there were, we could have solved them! We had all taken our own food, dessert, and drink, so quite a variety spread out in front of us. We were also entertained by a terrier dog being exercised by a drone, and a couple of surfcasters having some success. The bikes/trike got away before dark, the cars followed. Great break from the humdrum of a normal Wednesday. Thanks, Ross & Jenny! Flash # 1272 3

LAKESIDE CAFÉ & CRAFTS On the Lakefront, Memorial Drive, Rotorua. Phone: 349 2626 Where we meet every Saturday morning at 10:30am Our hosts: Colin & Norma Craig HAMILTON TOY RUN Sunday 5 th March 2017 Child Cancer Charity Run Cambridge To Frankton. Christine & I decided to leave a bit earlier than the others leaving at 9.00. We left at 8.30 and met our group in Cambridge. I think there was about 12 that left from the lake front. At 11am about 525 bikes left for the ride to Frankton where we had a hot dog & chips. We waited for the raffle to be drawn. Our number won the first prize which was a Dri-Rider jacket. We headed for home stopping in Tirau for and ice cream. We now have for sale, one Dri-Rider jacket size XXL for $150 dollars.. Contact: Bruce or Christine: 07/3487763. PUKEHINA DINNER RIDE WEDNESDAY 15 TH MARCH Well, after a lot of to and fro-ing at the last Club night over whether we would head for fish and chips at Maketu on the 15 th March we finally settled on a BBQ at my brother Ross s home at Pukehina Beach. At 5.30pm, 3 bikes and a trike followed Andrea and I in the car as ride leader (must be a first having a car as ride leader) left the Lakeside Café for Pukehina. The traffic was good and we were all able to stay together for the ride. The riders enjoyed the ride and not long after we arrived at Pukehina, Flash arrived on the Toyota Surf. Our hosts Ross and Jenny had things ready and we all enjoyed a lovely evening on their deck enjoying our BBQ and listening to the Pukehina surf. Despite arriving in a Surf, thankfully Flash resisted the urge to bare all and enter the surf. With darkness approaching it was time to say our farewells to our hosts and head home. With daylight saving these mid-week evening rides are very enjoyable. I was just a tad disappointed that I could not be on the bike but I made up for it the next day and joined the Thursday Lunch Riders for lunch at Maketu, this time on the bike. Here is a little Gnome who needs a brand new home. We packaged him up and sent him away, to find a new place where he can stay. So, take him in and see what you can do, we ll leave the ideas all up to you. You might like him dressed in a theme from your area, something funny or something scarier But you must bring him back to the Ulysses National Rally, the one being held in the Wairarapa Valley. The Branch that s cloned to the best dressed gnome, will win the coveted trophy to take back home. So please don t bring him back unpainted and bare, because if you come dressed the same well, we don t want you there!! Jokes Corner Wine is not the only drink good for you. An interview with 101 year-old Hattie McDonald of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. Reporter: Can you give us some health tips for reaching the age of 101? Hattie: For better digestion, I drink beer. In the case of appetite loss I drink white wine. For low blood pressure I drink red wine. In the case of high blood pressure I drink scotch. And when I have a cold I drink Schnapps. Reporter: When do you drink water? Hattie: I ve never been that sick. ***************************** 6
