3 Wit & Wisdom The summer night is like a perfection of thought. Wallace Stevens Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it. Russell Baker Look at the pink... just not your color. Occasionally I have come across a last patch of snow on top of a mountain in late May or June. There s something very powerful about finding snow in summer. Andy Goldsworthy Hello up there. Ok... something is not right here... In summer, the song sings itself. William Carlos Williams It s a cruel season that makes you get ready for bed while it s light out. Bill Watterson Ok, blondie, you have got to leave the party. Oops... where is the blonde hair? In June, as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single day. No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore all of them. Aldo Leopold What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade. Gertrude Jekyll Guess the feet and win a prize.

6 Resident of the M nth The Story of Alois Alzheimer BJ thank you for all the great things you do for our Mirabella residents. The store, the wii and always asking if you can do more. Your assistance with all of the games never goes unnoticed. Mirabella friends salute you and say THANKS TO YOU! Born June 14, 1864, in Germany, Alois Alzheimer was the psychiatrist and neuropathologist for whom Alzheimer s disease is named. He was an instrumental figure in the identification of the disease. Alzheimer combined research and clinical practice, and published papers on diseases of the brain. In 1906, he gave a lecture describing an unusual disease that affected a woman in her 50s, causing memory loss and eventually her death at age 55. Alzheimer found abnormalities in the woman s brain and identified nerve tangles. A colleague named the disease after Alzheimer, and patients were being diagnosed as early as 1911. To learn more about the disease and its history, go to the Alzheimer s Association website, www.alz.org. Times sure change... Somewhere along the way, things went from flower power to power naps! Father s Day Cookout With Jeramy Kunkle, Culinary Director, Firing Up the Grills! Come Celebrate Father s Day With Us, June 16 Congratulations, Gwen, for winning the lovely Mother s Day Bag Hanger for your door. Thanks to all of the residents who purchased raffle tickets for the bag. All proceeds went to our Alzheimer s fund. BB Raise Some Awareness: Some facts about the disease: As many as 5.3 million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer s. Alzheimer s and dementia triple healthcare costs for Americans 65 and older. Every 70 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer s. Alzheimer s costs more than $148 billion each year to Medicare, Medicaid and businesses. FROM THE PASTOR S DESK June 2013 But as for me, I trust in Thee, O Lord, I say, My times are in Thy hand. (Psalm 31:14-15) This past April we witnessed the devastation and destruction of terrorist bombings in Boston and an enormous explosion in West, Texas. In the former incident, hundreds of people were injured and three precious lives were lost. In the latter event, the fertilizer plant explosion cost the lives of 15 people, mostly firefighters, who were the first responders. What is to be our response? How do we reconcile the fact that God is good and loving, yet He allows such tragedy to cross our paths? Many theologians have attempted to answer such questions. But to those who have suffered loss, the best we can offer falls woefully short in mending broken hearts or rebuilding our lives. Our devotional verse reminds me that I don t have all the answers. I am not required to offer explanations or give a theodicy (defense) for the actions of God. Like the Psalmist, I must trust the Lord without reservation, believing that in spite of the whirlwind around me, my God has a plan for my life. And that plan often includes hardship and pain. See you Sunday! Pastor Steve
